Johnny Nelson.
Johnny Nelson.
After watching the horrendous British Heavyweight title fight I was wandering why doesn't Johnny Nelson make a serious attempt at the heavyweight ranks. It seems like the whole world is looking for a heavyweight savour and it seems the norm for the ex Cruiserweight champions to make a proper attempt at getting heavyweight glory (Gomez, Jirov, Toney - all in the top 15).
Johnny might not have much exposure in America, but most commetators know of him. allegedly said Danny Williams would have got a WBO title fight had he remained undefeated in 2004. Why not switch this attention to Nelson.
As much as I think Nelson' reign as world champion has been flawed, I'd give him half a chance against Brewester and even if he lost he could go back an show Skelton how to box.
He's got nothing to lose, cause it looks like his career is pittering out at Cruiserweight.

Re: Johnny Nelson.
I take your point but I read recently that Nelson claims he has only about two fights left in him. I would pressume he would like to end his career with his Cruiserweight Title still in his possesion.stujones wrote:After watching the horrendous British Heavyweight title fight I was wandering why doesn't Johnny Nelson make a serious attempt at the heavyweight ranks. I'm sure if the money was right he would fight at Heavy for some sort of Title but the question is for all Nelsons talent who's going to offer him a lot of money to fight thier Heavyweight?
Johnny Nelson is far too tricky an opponent and would make even in a loosing fight many a Heavy look very bad.
Re: Johnny Nelson.
He made a reasonably serious attempt in the early to mid-90's (on the road) and stood up to the likes of Corrie Sanders and Adilson Rodrigues (he was robbed twice against Rodrigues in Brazil). He also took part in a stinker with Henry Akinwande. He had the boxing ability to extend these guys, but not quite enough power to really buckle them. He did win the WBF and WBU heavyweight titles I believe (against limited opponents), but the fact he still dropped down to cruiser afterwards tells us that even Nelson knew he wasn't quite big enough for the big boys.stujones wrote:After watching the horrendous British Heavyweight title fight I was wandering why doesn't Johnny Nelson make a serious attempt at the heavyweight ranks. I actually watched the sleepathon that was Nelson vs Vassiliev in his last outing at a heavyweight, I would favour Vassiliev with Skelton currently.
You listed alot of good names who Nelson fought (I remember these fights to). However, despite his recent successes there is no way Sanders is the same fighter who beat Nelson all those years ago and you don't think Henry could win a world title.
Nelson tried and failed before, but this bunch seem to be alot worse. I'm not saying stick Nelson in with Klitchko, but Brewester - check out his record, he's been exposed before.
I think Nelson might do to the slow, plodding Skelton a similar number as he did to the slow, plodding Vassilev - but at least Vassiliev could punch using both hands.

Re: Johnny Nelson.
Has anyone here seen the Johnny Nelson V Adilson Rodrigues fights? I remember reading that he was robbed in both. Didn't even the Pro Rodrigues crowd jeer the second decision? I seem to recall reading that anyway,.bennie wrote:He made a reasonably serious attempt in the early to mid-90's (on the road) and stood up to the likes of Corrie Sanders and Adilson Rodrigues (he was robbed twice against Rodrigues in Brazil). Didn't Adilson Rodrigues get shot in the foot in an altercation with a traffic cop about a year ago in Brazil? Was there ever any charges etc over this?
AlexY2K4 you have been in Manchester far too long mate.Just because Nelson doesn't hold the W.B.U Cruiserweight Title doesnt mean he has never been world Champion.I know u lot up north think that because Ricky holds the WBU title and Carl Thompson holds the I.B.O title and they are such great champions and Manchester is the boxing capital of the world,Billy Graham is the best trainer in the world etc etc.But Nelson does currently hold a belt! But you may not have heard of the organisation he belongs too,its the W..........B.................O it must be an ok title cos Calzaghea and one of the Klitchkos has it as well.
FOR THOSE NOT FROM MANCHES TOH (and with more then 2 brain cells)READ ON
According to the WBO a current WBO world champion can move up or down a division and contest that title straight away...so in theory Nelson could fight Klitchko.

I very much doubt they will materailised - The IBF title is only being contested on Saturday. I just think at this stage he has nothing to lose really, he can always move back down and fight Carl Thompson to end his career on a high note.steve689 wrote:It could be an option if the fights at Cruiserweight do not materialise but i would prefer to see him try and unify the Cruiser belts before he retires rather than a dodgy stint up at Heavyweight.

Keep taking the drugs mate, and convince yourself that Ricky has a meaningful title, that Peter Kaye is a good Comedian, Man Utd are as good as Arsenal, Man City will still be a Premier Club in 4 weeks time, and that Phil Taylor is the only bloke who can throw a dart straight.
