Is Martinez still his mandatory? Didn't he have to fight him before the end of the year?

This guy doesn't look fit to spar Munroe let alone challenge for a European title. What about Mark Moran? With Maloney's VIP connection that should be an easy enough match to put together. Probably too early for Moran but still better than Fabrizio Trotter. Or what about the Irish guy, Paul Hyland, unbeaten and had a decent win over Mark Callaghan lately.

Coincidence that this is the same night as Hatton v Malignaggi by the same Promoter?

Maybe this will be on the UK leg of the PPV.

I had it confirmed that Trotta will be the opponet it's a done deal. I think Emerson is likely to be right as this will be the first British Leg of things before heading to Las Vegas.

Munroe was aloud this optional defence before his madatory due next up.

Munroe has won a major belt (against the odds) and made two defences in the space of six months. Let the man have a bit of a 'gimmee'. Christ, he empties bins all day long!

Haha nice one Bennie!

Yeah he has been active which is good, a rematch with Martinez would be a solid match if that comes off next. Not every fight can be big soemtimes you have to take fights liek this to build yourself up.

There's also a rumour that another big British fighter will be added. If it's PPV, I'll be buying it with bells on.

Monroe is still on a learning curve, he wasn't happy with his last performance. So this fight will let him get some more big fight confidence before facing a better foe.
Its a good bit of matchmaking by Maloney, get Monroe a decent payday, and more TV exposure.

Was Bouaita a mandatory? If not, that's three voluntaries in a row, and even though I love Rendall to pieces - that's not good enough. He has a lot of options, domestically and abroad. Marsh, Pickering, Moran, Parodi or even a rematch with Martinez would all suffice. Or if he really felt nifty then a date in Ireland for big money against Dunne would be ideal for him. If I was Maloney I would probably try to steer him towards a title shot after his next mandatory because I can't see Rendall holding onto this belt after the last two performances were he has struggled considerately. At least he would make big wonga and get a chance at a belt because if he loses before his shot at a world title then it will be hard for him to come back. And please Rendall, get your feet sorted and learn how to keep the range.

Boxing: Munroe rejects Dunne carrot
Independent.ie WebSearch
Wednesday September 17 2008

BOXING: The on-again, off-again Bernard Dunne challenge to European superbantamweight champion Rendell Munroe is off again, despite a €100,000 offer made to the English boxer's connections by Team Dunne, WRITES THOMAS MYLER.

The stumbling block is that the Irish camp want the fight in Dublin, while Munroe's people are seeking an English venue.

Munroe's promoter Frank Maloney has offered Dunne's connections €40,000 to meet Munroe, who took the title from the Dubliner's conqueror Kiki Martinez of Spain in one round 18 months ago.

Maloney's condition is that the fight against Munroe, a southpaw with 16 wins in 17, must be staged at an English venue, an offer rejected out of hand by Team Dunne.

Dunne's trainer Harry Hawkins has now accused Maloney of "running scared" of the Dublin boxer, who has 26 wins and one loss.

"We would like to thank Frank for his offer," he said. "However, our €100,000 offer for a defence in Ireland, more than double their one, would have been easily the biggest payday of Munroe's career. Clearly they are not as confident of beating Bernard."
Maloney said last night: "If they want a European title fight they should be coming to us -- we have the title."

Lads,

The above article was written in today’s Irish Independent Newspaper

To start with I’m not a massive Dunne fan, obviously as he is Irish I follow him and have been to see last fight (I really went to watch the up and coming Irish fighter called Andrew Murray on the undercard, watch out for him, he’s unbeaten in 13 fights, however not to great opponents) but anyway I just wanted to show the British public who may not be aware that there’s is a hell of a lot of money in Irish boxing…..

You see Dunne is a decent fighter, not everyone’s cup of tea but here in Ireland by god does he have some following. No disrespect to Munroe but there’s no chance in hell that he could sell out an 18,000 stadium on the back of his Euro title, Dunne has and will do so against if he’s against anyone half decent.

The main point I’m trying to get across is that there’s quite a bit of money in Irish boxing and a very big following. The Irish are a type of nation that loves jumping on a bandwagon of sorts, when Dunne was doing well everyone loved him and went to all his fighters, when he lost papers, television presenters and the general public got on his back but wait and see after a few more wins he’ll be our favourite son again and all will be rosy in the garden that is till he loses again!

Anyway all the best to the lad.

I'm not too fussed on the fight but i can see what Munroe's lot are up too.

Maloney knows his man is on a learning curve and by establishing him as a solid, credible European fighter means that they can give him a sound base when/if he eventually challenges for a world crown. Plus, they're building a fan base around the East Midlands with all these fights and the crowd running around in those flourescent jackets like the binmen.

Okay so this guy is poor fare but hopefully next Rendall can get in with Martinez and then Dunne and provided he comes through these two tough tests, they can get him a crack at a belt of some description (is the WBU super-bantamweight title vacant?!)

On the world scene superbantam is one of the hottest for champions, WBO Juan Manuel Lopez, WBA Celestino Caballero, IBF Steve Molitor, WBC Israel Vazquez.

Is there another division with such talent holding all the four main titles?

Exactly. Munroe's attitude is spot on. Always ready for dates and defending a 'proper' title each and every time. A real throwback professional. I don't see him progressing beyond European level, but so what? He's done brilliantly with his career so far.

I agree with Maloney's approach and really appreciate Monroe's work ethic. Yes, this is a gimme, but he's entitled to one if he's going to get out every ten to twelve weeks!

As for Dunne, he's got a cheek in my opinion. The fact is that a voluntary challenger travels; to try and argue that the Champion is scared to do so is a bit ridiculous.

I am quite shocked to read this, the Dunne team must be drinking the dark stuff, at no time has an offer of Euro's 100,000 appeared or been mentioned.

The offer that was on the table from Brian Peters was actually Euros 40,000 so someone is lying or wants to get their name in the paper with outrageous claims but then the Irish are great at elaborating the truth in sport especially when they have been on the dark stuff.

just to clear one other issue up when Munroe beat Martinez for the title that was a voluntary challenge and we paid the champion a lot more than Euros40,000 to come to Nottingham. We gambled and won.

His next defence against Bouaita was a mandatory defence so he has 9 months until his next mandatory so his last and next defence was and is a voluntary defence.

Can't you go back and say you'd accept EUR 100,000 if that's what they are offering? I don't see why Dunne can't just come over to fight Munroe here, provided RTE could still screen the fight. With the Irish contingent I'd expect to come across with him it would end up like a home fight anyway.

If I was Rendell I would be knocking down the door trying to get a fight with Dunne over in Ireland for that sort of money. It would be his biggest pay day and the atmosphere when I went to Dunne v Martinez pre fight was superb. I don't think Rendell will ever fight with a big crowd staying at home unless he's buried on a undercard of a Ricky Hatton card. It's also a winnable fight for him.

John Swan has a good point there. Why don't the Maloney lot go back too Brian Peters and say, "Okay fair enough we'll take the 100,000 Euro offer you made in the press release".

And then the 40,000 offer you claim is null and void :D

I don't have any issue with this one simply because Munroe has got bags of bottle and will fight anyone. He hasn't had it put on a plate for him, he's earned this 'safe defence' and is entitled to make a bit of money.

As long as it doesn't occur too often, good luck to Munroe.
