Haye v Chapman.....clash of the heavyweight titans

Odlanier Solis is the best fight to take. It's got history. Solis probably is a future champ if he knuckles down. I don't think Haye would want it thou.

When David Haye announced that he was to be promoting himself, at heavyweight, with a multi-fight deal with Setanta and the O2, he stated (as did Setanta) that he would be fighting "quality heavyweights" from the beginning of the deal.I, aswell as many other boxing fans that I have spoke to, felt genuinely excited by Hayes claims of cleaning up the heavyweight division and beating the best put there in the process.

So.........who is JD Chapman? An unbeaten (who has beaten nobody) heavyweight who I for one have never heard of. All the promises of big names and big promotions, both from promoter/fighter and broadcaster, have been found seriously short.Chapmans last win was against the world renowned Rich Boruff (KO 2) in the Shaikh Rashid Hall, Dubai. This is obviously why Hayemaker have gone for this option. Proven quality track record.

He is ranked highly (WBO 7, WBA 9, WBC 13), but with the current state of the heavyweight division, surely Haye has to be fighting one of the bigger names IF he is to be taken seriously as a heavyweight fighter (and promoter), and secondly if he wants to fill the O2 (did anyone else hear that pin drop?). Boxrec have this guy ranked at 114.........and the IBO have him at 92. Maybe they have missed something the governing bodies have noticed in this guy.

I think its a piss take for Haye to declare himself a promoter then behave like this.......and i for one hope that nobody is stupid enough to buy a ticket for the O2 show.

I think you're right and Haye should have signed with Warren; perhaps Bobby Gunn, Tocker Pudwill or Aldo Rios would be willing to move up in weight and then you'd have no problem.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with Chapman he may turn out to be a bum, but he is a genuine heavyweight and he has a record that suggests he can bang a bit. At least it won't be a Bobby Gunn situation ie, a blown up light middle fighting a much bigger man.

This fight is Hayes first at HW though, granted he's made a rod for his own back by stating that he's definately going to fight a top 10 oppo in his first outing, but if Haye hadn't of said that nobody would have had any problems with any of the opponents that are being mentioned.

No doubt Hayes had a dose of reality in terms of what the promotion game is really like, but I can't see this experience deterring him one bit. The funs really going to start after Hayes had his first 2 fights at HW and Wlad is firmly in his sites

I don't disagree with you, just playing devil's advocate. Think he's fine for a first opponent. I'd draw the line at Mercer though.

As long as the opponent is rated in the top 10 of the WBO, WBA, WBC or IBF, then THIS fight meets the criteria. Knocking out Bonin almost fulfilled this criteria, because he was barely out of the WBC top 10 (regardless of how shaky such ratings can be).

Can't help but think Haye was built up too much expectation, so that what he can realistically deliver comes as a letdown.

Hoping an aged Mercer gets ranked is a bit cynical.

Because Haye is being touted as a star, no one wants to come over here cheap. Again, all the hoopla of the last few months could be backfiring.

I think it would have been better to be busy (rather than the wait for a routine opponent who has been over regarded by a ranking system), to knock guys out regularly, to build a reputation, to improve his profile. Inactivity doesn't do much for a man's ranking. A recent KO win, to build the momentum of the Bonin KO, and the fact that Haye has held every belt one weight down, would not have hurt Haye - at all.
