Good - even - entertaining.

You never hear that about a Sports Network Card so it..
Well, lets be fair here. Matthews-Lindsay was a corker, for sure. But honestly, would you class anything else on that bill as a good even fight?

The Main Event was a decent scrap, but pre-fight odds of 1-16 on Rhodes and the fact that 2 of the judges had it that he didn't lose a round tell a clear tale. OK, it was good- and Coyle was very brave. But hardly an even fight. Only slightly during the middle rounds did the result appear to be in any doubt.

The Wales fight was ended on an unfortunate injury, but if it hadn't been for that, I doubt that the result would have been anything other than a predictable win for Wales.

To be clear- It was a good show, and some enjoyable action. But in all honesty I wouldn't say it was any more "even" than any Sports Network show.

That said, Sports Network's show next Saturday looks remarkably weak- a series of unbeaten prospects facing... unnamed as yet opponents. No doubt guys with long losing records.

So fair play to Hayemaker for putting on an enjoyable show!

Of the fights shown only RR vs Coyle was classed as an easy night, but that turned out to be a good fight foir most part.

Lindsay Vs Matthews is better than most TOP OF THE BILL SN SHOWS.

Also - Ramagggooolldididiidiiddidi Vs Josh was a decent fight for a prospect.

Excelllent night of boxing.

Looks like Hayemaker are getting a few pointers from UFC - eg Hayemaker 1: The Rhodesshow!; the music between rounds.

What was the Golden Boy logo all about? Surely their involvement in this was zero

Good start, Hayemaker and Setanta are a good match

Yeah- it was a good show- and it looks good for Haye maker- but to be fair, and to be balanced, it has to be said that the nature of the sport is that events can look good- or bad- depending on how the bouts go.

It was the knockout that made the Matthews/Lindsay fight. For sure, it was a good well matched bout, but had Matthews simply hung on a taken a probably wide points victory it would have gone down as simply another good, well matched British tussle.

Josh V Ram- yeah, indeed, good quality opponent and a decent fight- but again, without the ending being as it was it may well have been a wide points victory.

And if the ref, or the corner, had pulled Coyle out in the early rounds- as did look likely at one point, it would have gone down as a very one sided title defence.

The other fights are all worth a mention.
Woodhouse, Watson, Dodson and McGuire.
Not sure if any were shown, but there was some good action there.
For the ticket paying public this was a great show.

True - but a lot of ifs ad buts!

We know one thing, SN hardly ever do even half decent shows!

Thanks mate, went to see them live at the NEC around 92/93, they were all superb. By the Way, Waylon is my birth name, my father was a US soldier in WW2.

Whatever happened to Josh Wale's older brother?

These win some lose some bills are great, but will Setanta keep buying if each fighter is 15-6 or 12-4 or 24-7?

I hope we all embrace pick-em fights and ALL their implications, because it will be the end of the 25-0 English title challenger or 31-0 British title challenger or the 17-0 Commonwealth.

Defeat becomes a real reality for all if matched hard.

Can Haye still sell fighters with defeats to Setanta and ticket-buyers? It will be interesting to see if he can.

We've had a long era of unbeaten is everything.

Setanta seem clued up on the type of boxing that they want to broadcast (i.e. consistant competitive boxing) and I'm sure that these type of conversations would have been going on when Hayemaker promotions and Setanta were discussing their deal and their vision for the future, so I'm hopeful that Setanta are not going to be too 'O' orientated.

Whether the lack of O's on the card will put off the ticket buyers is another matter, but if Hayemaker promos can get a reputation for putting on enteratining competitive cards, then I'm sure they'll draw plenty in the doors.

The sport needs to get away from the Hatton style silver-spoon fed careers and I think that the promoters recognise this (most of em anyway), so I'm hopeful that the O is going to become far less important over the coming years and competitive bouts are going to come to the fore

I think too many people are getting obsessed with the idea that these two Promotors are in a head to head battle.
Whilst Hertfordshire may be ringing to the sound of babies throwing their rattles around, I'm sure Hayemaker are only interested in looking at their own performance and not whether Wazza approves or otherwise.
I did say in a previous thread that judgement of Hayemaker should come AFTER they had the chance to put shows on, and as a first event it was good.
It's still early days.
Let's see how the next one pans out with Haye topping the bill, and what the undercard produces.
If, as a consequence of new entrants to the Promotional field, the rest up their game (not just Wazza) then that's great for UK boxing.

Fwanky Barsteward is more than at war with HAYEMAKER - Hayemaker do not seem to care and are just doing their thing.

It is only natural to compare the two firms. The first show was crucial and I think Hayemaker did a good job.

I enjoyed it, and Setanta's coverage was good... would have like to have seen the Dodson fight.

Woodhouse aint that bad - maybe a case of what could have been, but he has some definate talent and who knows.

I really feel for Derry Matthews, I tipped Lyndsay before the bout and I think alot of people did also. I read some comments that a few here thought (prior to this fight) the Lyndsay was a better prospect/boxer than Appelby/Truscott. Well, at time Matthews made him look decidedly ordinary and he was less than 6 minutes away from a performance, that wasn't great, but showed that he is still possibly the best Featherweight in the Uk - then bang (I mean eligable for the British title when I mean Uk).

I really hope after maybe a couple of 6 rounders, Matthews is back in the mix - he can come again... maybe a rematch with Lyndsay 6 months down the line. Its a fight I would like to see again, fight of the night.

Very good night of boxing. For not having any real names, other than Rhodes, it held my attention well throughout.

Looking forward to the next one now. I really think they're onto something here, I definitely want to see Matthews again, Wale too (you could tell he went in there trying way to hard to impress).

Some very fan friendly styles, there was a decent mix on Saturday, and that's not including the untelevised part of the show.

If they can line up a decent undercard for HayevsTBA that's going to be a great night.

Wazza and co are probably already weighing up the ROI of shipping over a witch doctor to try and hex show 2. :DD

Well done Hayemaker Promotions.

Having watched this again, I really feel that people are a little premature in saying how much better than Sports Network it is.

Rhodes V Coyle, as a main event, was a comfortable and one sided win for Rhodes. Coyle's heart and bravery kept him going- he took a lot of punches that night- but it was clearly a "Rhodes show".

Lindsay V Matthews , now that was a great fight- as it looked on paper, it turned out in the ring. But to be fair Sports Network are more than capable of staging such bouts too. Minter V Jenning for exmaple.

I only saw two undercard fight, but judging for the results of the rest, this DOES look better than Sports Network. All the opponents were decent opponents, most of them clearly really making a fight of it.

But other promoters have backed up their shows with undercards that are equally enjoyable too, and with the exception of the Wales fight, which was an injury, results DID go as expected.

The Rhodes fight was anything but comfortable. I've seen his knockout losses and there were a couple of times I thought "shit, here we go again". A fight that should have been a no-brainer turned out to be quite good.

A lot of people probably thought that Hayemaker were going to be all about Haye, last Saturday's fights showed serious intent and to roll up alongside your main competitor in your first outing bodes well for them.

If they can put together a couple of really interesting fights on Haye's undercard, I cant think of a bigger british boxing occassion.

Edit: Other than Calzaghe/Pavlik, Hatton/Mayweather II ... or Khan/Prescott II

Hayemaker are thinking like FANS of the Sport. They are asking 'what fights would I want to watch as a Fan'.

I agree Rhodes fight was a neat Gimme - but I will excuse that because it was a goo fiht an at times was like Blundell Vs Rhodes all over again!

NOW..

Sports Networks main critera is 'Who can I bring in to keep my boys 0 intact.

Dispute that if you will - but I am sick of watching SN fighters is what amounts to nothing more than open sparring.

Even Amy Whinehouse agrees.

DG: Amy - is Haye protecting his fighters 0?

Amy: Me say, No No No!

Hayemaker seem to be dealing with their fighters by going the David Haye route - biggest and best challenges you can make asap.

How can we - the fans - complain?

Coyle was the highest British ranked boxer that a deal could be struck with.
Selection wasn't based upon having an easy night - and it wasn't.
I can't believe the Promotor has to justify the selection of opponents after his debut show.
Comparatively speaking compared to the dross served up over the years by other UK Promotors this was a good show.

EPNG
That's the point mate.
Some boxers trash talk, lay down the gauntlet, then run a mile when their bluff is called.
I am speaking in general terms, not specifically about the Rhodes situation.
Often the Promotor gets it in the neck when certain fights don't come off, but on many occasions the finger should be pointed at the fighter.
To be fair to Wazza for instance, he took a lot of flak about the LM situation some years back when we had the chance for some excellent match ups to be made - but I know for a fact it wasn't Wazza that was always the hurdle - far from it.

It's why I've been frustrated by the moaning on Haye. He has a date which cannot be moved. This will already narrow down the possibilities available. Did he leave it a bit late, quite possibly. But that's based on the assumption he wasn't looking until August.

However, why should he pay Rahman $1.5m or Johnson more than he originally agreed on?

I just hope they've learnt from their mistake and concentrate on the opponent first next time, and not the date. However, I have a feeling the dates might be a stipulation for the TV contract.
