QUESTIONS FOR ANY OF OUR SCOTTISH FRIENDS

Post by overhand_right »

Just doing a bit of research -- what is it the english do that really p#sses off scottish people?

Is there anything thats really sensitive with Scots about their heritage or faces in history?

Is there really a rivalry between Glasgow and Edinburgh? Whats the crack there, what is it about each other that causes friction?

Many thanks if you can give any help beloved gentlemen

Take cover...INCOMING!!

I don't think th etaking ofScottish brides on their wedding days' and handing them over to English lords and the like for the wedding night particularly endeared us. As a starter for ten.
I know it's a bit late now but I feel ashamed about it if that's any consolation, ..loads I'm sure.

I was speaking to a Welsh Nationalist in times gone by and I asked her why she had an intense hatred of the English, she came back with the 'centuries of oppression' line - which is a load of bollocks IMO. Should I as an English man hate Italians or Scandinavians because the Romans and Vikings raped and pillaged their way through our land a millenium or 2 ago?

IMO the hatred of the English by some Welsh, Scots and Irish for what went on in centuries gone by is on par with the fanatical Muslims who hate everything from the West. Maybe the Welsh and Scottish Nationalists would have preferred it if the Spanish, French, Dutch or Portugese had ruled their land instead of the English. Would they have benefited by having them as rulers over the English or were all the major countries of the time brutal bastards? (definately the latter IMO)

I just see the hatred of the English by certain sections of Britain as the 'Little Brother, BIG Brother' syndrome. They pretend they dislike us, but really they want to grow up to be as cool as us!

I grew up with a more religious understanding of it all, more so than simply Scots vs English. English = Protestantism = Throne and Throne = English...

I think the Scots and the Welsh would tell you just about equally, "it's not so much a hatred or dislike for the English, it's just that 'they' (the English), come first and 'if' you don't or can't make it there, they (the English), are slow to give you recognition or credibilty!" There IS a North-South divide, even the English of the North will tell you that, so unless your English or 'hubbed' around London where the money and/or power-players are, you often won't even get a chance of breaking the inner circle.

Three Scot's boxing greats can attest to that, Jim Watt had to sign South or NO joy, Kenny Buchanan (like Tommy Farr) had to leave and do it on his own, only to recieve admonishment & begrudging recognition when they got back and Bert Gilroy never got near a title shot in favour of English contenders, though he himself was leading contender & official challenger!

I honestly don't believe it's a hate thing, I personally love England & the English, I just think it's dispersed people (more so past times), tired of getting handed the scraps and more importantly, those in place & power DENYING that it even goes on at all!

I can understand and relate to that, the location of the National stadium being a prime example. Coventry had an excellent bid in for it, it was in the centre of the country, it was easily accessible by road, rail and air and was about a quarter of the price of Wembley. Yet the people making the decisions in London strangely gave it to the London location

Yeah fcuk it I agree with the Scottish the (southern) English are wankers

But my good fellow, it extends far beyond the borders of Scotland, wales and ireland.

Something tells me its the years of British/English propaganda peddled out over generations.

Rule Brittania - etc.

Irony is, it has all come home to roost.

It's confusing sometimes. I get grief from Scottish and Irish friends. I'm, and feel, English (I think haha-born and bred anyway), but my father is Irish, my mother is half Irish/English, her mother is half English/German, her grandmother is half German/Italian. My mother's father is half Spanish/Irish and his father is half Spanish/English. I guess I must have lots of disputes in my family especially around the time of the last world war and the one before. Can't we just have a pint, and just get on with each other in the present? Maybe we'll learn from our past mistakes, and hatred will be no more.

To be honest I couldn't give a toss if the scots/irish/welsh hate us, I mean that's their sad little problem isn't it. Sure I enjoy a bit of a rivalry with our neighbours but to actually spew the sort of bile that they do about the english? No thanks. :D
