biomechanics...keep getting mentioned

Post by rhino222 »

interesting this, some fighters are just not physicallymeant to be world level fighters...they can often 'coast' their waythrough domestic level and beyond, but when the top tier is reached they are never going to come up trumps... elongated necks(conception?)... legs too thick(oakey)...etc

some physical freaks can use their advantagesto reach the top tier,im not convinced eubankwas real world class,but...his chin bailed him out, time and time again.

it's somewhere along the lines of this: 2 boxers can be exactly the same weight, train just as hard, equal resolve and equal skill...but there are other variables, like bio-mechanics, which could mean that one fighter gets a slight edge over the other.
Either that, or something completely different. :geek2:

Its an interesting one, I think all aspects of the body can be worked on and you can change your style adapt to the physical disadvantages and turn them into advantages. I mean, nobody had chunkier legs than Naz. Now I am not comparing the skills of Hamed and Oakey, but all chunky legs do is make you small for the weight. Oakey should be bobbing and weaving more throwing hooks. He has the advantage of never having to punch down on anyone, so he can generate full power - and use those legs into the power.

I think boxing is the one sport in which somatotype isn't that fundamental. Of course, its a massive factor, but for many other sports it is essential. You aint going to see a 5 foot 7 number 8 play international Rugby.... but with boxing, having the "perfect" boxers build doesn't always mean success... otherwise, Thomas Hearns would never have come close to losing a fight in his prime. Indeed, that could be highlight the case in which chunkier legs are better - Hearns' chicken legs were involved in the reasons/excuses why he lost to Leonard and Hagler. Against Leonard, experts claimed his lack of legs strength attributed to them "going" in the late rounds vs Leonard, and against Hagler he blamed a leg massage for him having "no legs".

As part of my degree, I did a presentation on somatotype in sport, and I just showed a video of Hagler vs Hearns - which 1) provided me with an excellent excuse to watch that fight again and 2) was aimed to highlight there is no ideal somatotype.

Now, muscle fibres (fast twitch or slow twitch) is a massive factor...

What really fascinates me more, not so much in a good way, regarding biology and boxing is how some fighters get Pugilista Dimensia early, and others who looked to have had a longer/harder career don't (or at least don't show the symptoms). Take Foreman and Holmes - boxing close to their fifties, in Holmes' case not really that inactive right the way till his last bout. Sure accomplished boxers, but had many many hard night.

Everyone has different biomechanics and each biomechanics have their advantages and disadvantages. SO if your short and stocky, bob and weave and get on the inside. If your rangy, be fleet footed and box at range with the fast 1-2 using plenty of movement.

Muscle fibre can be made to act fast/slow twitch even if it isnt with training. But fast/slow twitch isn't an advantage/disadvantage. If you have more fast twitch you'll be faster and explosive but burn out quicker. But if you have more slow twitch you can fight for longer with a higher workrate despite being outslicked early

Yes, it would be interesting to test the great boxers. Cause that is the one thing that seperates the greats from the also rans is speed, reactions (slipping of punches) Hand speed.

Even with Parkinson's and all other health problems, Ali, even against Holmes', still had hand speed comparable to what we saw on Prizefighter. A completely shot fighter who could only throw 2-3 punches a round, and had lost alot of speed, is still as fast or if not faster than a prime fighter (at a lower level).

People of West African Decent (ie African Americans) typically have more white muscle fibre. It wouldnt be suprising if Ali/Jones Jr/Judah had a higher percentage

White fibre isnt the only determinent of speed, believe it or not the Great Jamaican Sprinter Merlene Ottey only had about 60% white fibre. Quantity of muscle cells(which can't change), leg/arm length and obviously training have great effect.

In all of thiscomes the most important thing Balance. Posture and Balance of what makes Joints move Muscle. Plus the memory thats instilled in them for perception of movement, repairing bad Muscle memory, is the key. For power of movement the muscle contracts all the time and evetually is less efficiant and wont work to its optimun. Try doing it on a regular basis injurys occure, what you need is muscle to expand for bigger contractions and direction, Isometric stretch is the answer for endurance and speed, do it regular the results are amazing. Remember an injured Athlete cant get fit, The body works all or nothing. :o
