Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
just read leach's column about the Khan pay -per view shambles (i hope its still topical)
i just thought he nailed it....Sky were 'taking the piss' and they've reaped the whirlwind now.
what a contrast to Claude Abrams's opinion in boxing news....'khan isnt public property...etc'
im embarrassed that the greatest weekly boxing paper in the world is run by such a cheese eating surrender monkey
as far as im concerned the demise of boxing is due in part to the canyon thats been created between overhyped super stars (who get pay-per-view- sheep watching) and the rest of the boxing world.
I never watch Calzaghe or dela hoya or any of these superstars becasue i think they are dead boring
AND DONT BOTHER ARGUING THE TOSS... BECAUSE THE MAINSTREAM VIEWING PUBLIC DOES AS WELL ! and thats what really counts
think on sky and claude abrams while u munch on ur fistic fromage

Re: Glyn leach boxing monthly
I'm with you on that one, as the hype machine sometimes kills a fight for my liking. The constant build-up and 24/7 cameras, interviews etc.I never watch Calzaghe or dela hoya or any of these superstars becasue i think they are dead boring
A friend in work asked me recently what my thoughts were on the upcoming Hatton-Malignaggi and Calzaghe-Jones Jnr bouts and when I replied that I wasn't overly excited by either, he was shocked. "Isn't that like the Premier League of boxing?" he said using a Football analogy.
"I would rather watch two world class Mexican super-bantamweights unifying their titles to be honest!"
Lol, maybe that's just a sad case like me!
As for Leach. I haven't read his article yet but I will seek it out now that you recommended it.

Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
I agree with the sentiment of this topic.
It's about time the author's and fight reporter's took the bull by the horns and said what the rest of the industry are thinking.
All too often they are worried they will be frozen out of their free-ticket from said promoter if they dare speak out of term which is absolutely ridiculous.
Let's be honest, were talking about just one promoter here mainly.

The only fighters I care about watching, that are still active, are RJJ, Gamboa and Toney.

May I ask why that is? Only 'cos I'll actually watch anything which promises to be an intriguing clash of styles whether it's a Mexican versus an Armenian Aussie or Barrett-Haye. I don't really enjoy watching one-sided fights, no matter who's fighting.Gray-Fox wrote:The only fighters I care about watching, that are still active, are RJJ, Gamboa and Toney.
Toney & RJJ's recent performances have bored me to feck; I know people are gonna rip me for this, but I think RJJ-Calzaghe's gonna be a bit like snorting powdered Mogadon with a Night-Nurse chaser.
Bit baffled, to be honest, but horses for courses...

Good for him, I'll pick this up today. Sounds like he puts Claude @ BN to shame, after his recent tiptoeing round the subject

Ever since about 2006 I get so depressed over the guy I've just edited him out of reality. Watching the first Sam Peter maul (which I even think he won by about three points) was just odiferous, & I saw about four rounds of the rematch & decided it's not on.
It's only boring 'cos I know exactly what's going to happen as soon as his fights are announced against top ten opponents: five lovely shoulder rolls a round, four expert quarter-inch knee dips, a half-dozen whip-like right-hand counters, & an interminable wait while he gets his breath back... Repeat for twelve rounds; Toney loses controversial decision because he's too old & fat & the other guy kept his hands moving, & afterwards you have this recurring funny feeling that had he not been so worn & used & grossly out of shape he'd have stood the other guy on his head & beaten them to death.
I just can't take it anymore...

Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
I used to love Boxing Monthly about seven, eight years ago but then it went off the boil (or maybe my tastes changed) and I stopped buying it.
However, someone lent me the last couple of issues and I was very surprised by how good it is. Plenty of good comment and well-thought out features. I feel like I've just met up with an old friend again.

Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
In this or last months issue of BM was a review of Clay Moyles excellent Sam Langford book .. would it be possible for somebody to provide a scan of the review for me to forward to Clay?
Or failing that .. can somebody tell me if the review is in this months .. I`ll then pick a copy up myself.
thanks.

Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
This article is spot on though isn't it? Khan fights a nobody 3 weeks ago and a load of mugs have to pay £15 to watch it(unless you waited for the FREE rerun just 5 days later like I did) yet tonight 2 multiple weight champions are facing off on normal Sky, it's a joke.
We got DLH v Mayweather, Mosley v Vargas 1&2, Mayweather v Gatti and all 3 Barrera v Morales fights on normal Sky yet they charge £15 to watch a fighter who hasn't even proved himself to be the best lightweight in Britain get blown out in less than a minute by a total unknown.

Tyson-Bruno 2 was a disaster for anybody who paid for it, as Bruno was petrified & folded like a newspaper.
The only time I've seen a fighter more scared was when Tyson himself fought Holyfield in the rematch!!!!!

Hear hear!!!
I suppose it might be a bit late now as he is in his 41st year, but why the hell could be not just keep out of KFC & get back down to LHW & show his talents?
Like you say, it's so frustrating to see such a talented fighter blow it all because he is too fat to fight properly.
Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
When you look at James Toneys skills and natural ability in his prime it's amazing that he achieved so little. Look at his career pre-Jones compared to post-Jones and it's almost as if it's two completely different fighters.

BM's always been a good read.
i don't buy boxing news every week now.
mainly cos our local newsagents have changed and i can't be arsed to ask em to get it in for me.
DD
get the ring quite regular as well.
got shitloads of BM's that i'm thinking of selling though actually.
every issue since feb 99 (except for march 99 and one late last year).

I have them from the very first edition so.......p--s off!
I subscribe and you steal your copy from WHSMITH.
The two issues you are missing are because someone bought them before you could nick them..chav.
Re: Glyn Leach Boxing Monthly Sky - Khan critique
Yep. He couldn't really deal with that defeat could he('Losing is not an option' on his robe that night)? Went schitzo on Jackie Kallen after the fight and then pretty much wasted a decade!banjo wrote:When you look at James Toneys skills and natural ability in his prime it's amazing that he achieved so little. I wonder what the hell went wrong with his conditioning between the Prince Charles Williams fight, which was only I think a couple of months before, and the Jones fight.
