Errol Christie, what are your memories???

It's quite astonishing to think that fight was an "eliminator" for the British title, what with all the interest it received 8) .

I can't imagine nowadays an eliminator taking centre stage at the Albert Hall, and have the boxing nation at a standstill awaiting the outcome. I blame Warren

Herol Graham was said to have split up their presser brawl, then later goes onto beat Kaylor himself.

Talking about Kaylor I always found Him very polite nothing like I expected before meeting Him the first time. Near the end of His career I did some work with Errol, found Him a Gem always upbeat Loved the Guy.

Errol's a likeable guy, even when he's taking the p!ss out of you, as he did in my case when I was a skinny 18 year old at a local gym. He showed me the way to the women's little weights and suggested I use them instead of the mens ones !! All done harmlessly and with a smile.

Graham really hammered Kaylor in their fight.That was one of his best performances.

i seem to remember Graham often making a point to quickly fight the men that had defeated Christie like Seys and Boston.

Bobby Watts had the last laugh on Kaylor. He brought Buster Drayton over to crush the West Hammer. I have to say, there was nothing but respect from Watts after the massacre (which virtually cost Mike Jacobs his refereeing licence).

Kaylor was almost insanely brave. I can still remember Terry Lawless pulling him between rounds due to a shocking cut his man had picked up against American Dwight Walker - and as Lawless was informing Harry Gibbs of his decision, the bell rang and Kaylor just darted out and carried on with the fight (which he won on points).
His body language was such that Lawless and Gibbs just let him get it on with it.

What a gutsy bloke All these stories of Kaylor and Christie makes me wish they were still around today.

A big contributing factor for sure, they were Huge. He told me He got terrible cramps in them all the time . He wasnt making excuses He is not that type. When showed what to do He was Shocked and rather excited as I recall with the remark well F**cking Hell . Im looking forward To reading Terrys peice, He usually gets it spot on.

Christie did put terrible pressure on his calves, the way he fought on his toes all the time, kind of leaning forward to reach his opponents and thus stretching those muscles. I have no doubt he suffered cramps. I also have no doubt that Kaylor 'ruined' him. He produced one last great fight against Mannion but Mannion was always a soak 'em up type of fighter with no punch. The Galwayman was over the hill, anyway, when Christie pasted him.

Good point Bennie, To be Honest I think it was before that. Some of the tales He told me were shocking,He wasnt making excuses, in fact He was Laugthing most of the time we talked. He is a lovely guy.

Christie should have stuck around for the Commonwealth Games and the 1984 Olympics (Kaylor went to the 1980 Games) but he was too talented for Kevin Hickey to accept. Hickey liked moulding the plodders, such as Nick Wilshire and Pete Hanlon, into decent fighters - but couldn't handle real talent, pretty much like the FA couldn't stomach a Glenn Hoddle.
Hickey once made Errol stand in a corner like a dunce.

You would know all about it, Scrap, given the treatment meted out to your man Colin McMillan by 'the system'. I saw Colin win two ABA titles and they robbed him both times and cost him a place in Seoul in 1988.

With Amir Khan getting chinned a few weeks ago I got thinking about Errol Christie.

Quite an open thread, what are your memories of him? How good was he??

The Mark Kaylor fight was one of my favourite fights ever.

The build up to that fight was one of the most explosive I can remember.

Nice article, Terry. Christie is yet another angry young man 'saved' by boxing. His whole family boxed. Michael and Lloyd were fine fighters, too, although Errol was always the most talented. I've seen a video of him sparring Duran when Frank Maloney brought Duran over in 1987. Roberto was horrendously fat (inevitably, between fights) but got in there for an exhibition with three fighters, the last of whom was Christie. Errol actually got stuck into Duran, and why not. Duran had previously (and paternally) complained about Michael Harris entering the ring without a headguard, and then cracked Harris with a heavy right counter to underline his point, so it was half-real. Disaster lay ahead for Christie as he lost fight after fight. Duran came back to win the WBC title in a snowstorm in Atlantic City against Iran Barkley. Fact is always stranger than fiction.
