Calzaghe v Johnson
Calzaghe v Johnson
Does anybody think that Johnson can beat calzaghe? I only saw him in the Woods fights, but he did not look much above woods, who is a very limited fighter. Calzaghe has fought some decent guys and his hand speed and volleys of puches is impressive, why had Johnson given him the shot?

johnson in his prime
Johnson is in his prime late in his career. He has fought a lot of the guys around the top 10 in the past few years and beat most (been robbed a lot). I still like Calzaghe to outpoint him. Johnson won't be stopped, unless he gets old overnight. If Calzaghe stops him, then Calzaghe has a good accomplishment, more so than just the win.

Joe will win on points easy, too fast for Johnson I reckon. He's getting the shot because Johnson can't really make any decent money elsewhere, unless he goes to his opponents home town ( or near enough anyway ).
If he gets by Calzaghe, he'll probably get offers from Germany or France to defend there. A modern day road warrior.

I give Johnson a good shot, perhaps I'm being a bit generous because I like him, and I like his story, he's the poster boy for all those guys out there who never got an even break in their career, and he's made it where he is through hard work and perseverance.
The great unknown is what happens when Calzaghe connects, is he able to hurt Johnson, or does Johnson just wade through it?
Also, can Johnson hurt Calzaghe, I think he can. I think Johnson hits harder than Byron Mitchell, he certainly looked very heavy handed against Woods in both bouts, not one punch KO power (although the ropes saved Woods from going down in the 4th), but leg-stiffening jolting shots, which come in clusters.
I think Calzaghe may box more in this one, but that could actually play into Johnson's hands as he likes to be able to surge forward, I don't think he would do well if he was pushed on the back foot by anyone.

Huh? Im confused.!Goz wrote:Good post, you would be his boxing forum equivalent then?{amateur} wrote:Calzghe is a piece of shit and I hope he gets KTFO!
I jus t hate him because of his tactics in the boxing world calling out people and then all the shit after!
And what do you mean by his forum equivalent????? Please explain!
I think you will find that he means the piece of shit in the forum as opposed to the ring. That is not my option simply one possible reading of the post. I suspect it was down to your balanced and cleverly stated comments.
Anyway Calzaghe would have fought anyone worth fighing, but Mundine refused and Ottke (who was offered £1 mil to fight calzaghe, even in germay) refused, so who else? He fought, Eubank, Starie, Sheika, Woodhall, Reid, Mcintyre, Jiminez and Mitchell. None of whom are chumps. And a few others like Veit, Mychicken (it is easier to spell that way), pudwell and Thornberry who were a lot weaker than their records would suggest, I mean who thought Viet would be the walkover that he was? And is.
My money is on Calzaghe, but not without a few scares along the way, feels kinda like Lewis v Tua, you felt Lewis would win, but you knew that Tua could fight.

All im saying is he's a dick that gets on my nerves alot with this calling out stuff, all fighters that call guys out in public do but when they do it and offer them shit $$$$$ it ticks me just a little bit more!bugs wrote:I think you will find that he means the piece of shit in the forum as opposed to the ring. amateur dude if you stop calling fighter pieces of shit (you did the same about brewster) you will find people more receptive mate. Just advice. Take it or leave it pal.{amateur} wrote:All im saying is he's a dick that gets on my nerves alot with this calling out stuff, all fighters that call guys out in public do but when they do it and offer them shit $$$$$ it ticks me just a little bit more!bugs wrote:I think you will find that he means the piece of shit in the forum as opposed to the ring. ottke didnt wanna know bout Joe so if joe calls him out and Sven didnt wish to know that doiesnt make Joe the crim, I agree that we havent seen the best of Cazaghe and his career has been somewhat frustrating to date but stepping up in weight to fight the IBF champ is a valiant and applaudable step. Johnson's a hard if unspectacular champ but a very good and worthy opponent.
Johnson is 'hard and unspectacular' and I do like him, but he had two close fights with Clinton Woods. He won, but certainly the first one was close. Now, Woods is no mug but I'd put Clazaghe way ahead of him in most departments. On that alone, even before you take in age and styles and stages of career, I think Calzaghe's got this one.
Johnson'll have his moments, but I have to favour Calzaghe

i agree mate but its not clear cut.
Some people seem to think that Johnosn is a no-hoper which he isnt, hard hard man.
Clinton was good enough to go 6 with RJJ in the states and Jonhson beat Clinton up in the second fight not that these things are a clear indication but they do offer some semblance of a form guide.
Its not an easy night for Joe, not by a long chalk.
In fact I would go as far as to say this is his toughest test yet.

OK, the differences -
first fight, they were close. This to me says that on the night they were two similar boxers. The fact that Johnson was able to go away and bring a better game to the table says more about his team and his post-match analysis than about his ability to step it up on the night
Jones could have taken out Woods much sooner. Not saying Clinton wasn't worth his chance, he was, and he did his utmost in there which is all you can ask but you know how Jones fights, he isn't looking for those one-punch KOs.
However, I do agree that this will be a hard night's work for JC, and one to which I'm very much looking forward. Still picking Calzaghe though
That was pretty much it.bugs wrote:I think you will find that he means the piece of shit in the forum as opposed to the ring. That is not my option simply one possible reading of the post. I suspect it was down to your balanced and cleverly stated comments.
Apologies Amateur, I'm sure your a decent chap, I'm as big a critic of Calzaghe career as anyone but a feel the problems are rather more complex that simply labelling a very good boxer 'a piece of shit'.

I have a feeling this fight isn't going to happen. I was surprised when Warren agreed to match Calzaghe vs. the tough veteran Johnson, because it seemed such an un-FW-like move, in the sense that it was a far from "safe" matchup. With Warren having had time to reconsider, Showtime having pulled out of the deal would be the perfect excuse for FW to cancel the entire card.
Hope I'm wrong, though.

My apologize guys I dont mean to be so one sided and I know Calazghe is no "piece of shit" I just am no lover of his, I know his ability I know what he did to Mitchell like 40 power shots in a row he is a good fighter just hasn't ever gone anywhere (not that its his fault) I wont be so critical or one sided in my posts again sorry guys!

What's all these rumours of a June 5th no show? I don't see why not - they'll put Hatton in with some low budget lightweight stiff - and all his gullible fans will turn out in force, and make FW enough money to pay Johnson's wages ( which wont be much anyway, allegedly ).

How can the show make money without Showtime?MightyWarrior wrote:We'll soon know 8)knockout artist wrote:MW, you have stuck to your guns all along, and so will I.MightyWarrior wrote:Joe will win on points easy, too fast for Johnson I reckon. I would suggest your sums are wrong....
Hiring of MEN Arena £40k
Ricky Hatton £300K or thereabouts (for instance)
Opponent (50k)
Calzaghe 400k
Johnson 400k
Other promotional costs 100k (wild stab in the dark here)
Ticket Sales,
70 quid is too high an average, more like 50 I would say.
16,000 x 50 = 800,000
Sky TV Money 500k?
Total = 1.3 million in
Total out 1 million
Profit 300k for Frank.
These are obviously not well informed figures, but they've got to be in that region....
Cazlaghe, Johnson, Hatton and his opponent may be on less than these figures too, due to the lack of showtime money.
I'm no authority on this subject, but I'd like to see your figures knockout artist.
