Newspaper Decisions (NWS)

Post by Emaster »

In BoxRec, Newspaper Decisions (NWS) are repesented as W-NWS, L-NWS, or D-NWS. Harry Greb's record, for instance, contains a lot of them.

Is it correct that the official results were NDs, though, as this encyclopaedia article suggests, which gives "illustrative purposes" as the reason for the representations of those fights as wins, losses, or draws in BoxRec? But shouldn't the unofficial W-, L-, or D-NWS decisions be separated from official Ws, Ls, or Ds in the boxers' records? (Greb's record reads 260-21-17-1 without drawing a distinction between official and unofficial wins, losses or draws.)

A "no decision" bout occurred when--by law or by pre-arrangement of the fighters--if both boxers were still standing at the fight's conclusion and there was no knockout, no official decision was rendered and neither boxer was declared the winner. But this did not prevent the pool of ringside newspaper reporters from declaring a consensus result among themselves and printing a newspaper decision in their publications. Officially, however, a "no decision" bout resulted in neither boxer winning or losing.
So, I guess by today's standards.. since there would have been a winner in these matches (outside of a draw), a newspaper decision serves as a "good enough" substitute.

But when the fights were fought today's standards did not apply, which is not reflected in the fighters' records. So I thought it might be appropriate to distinguish between an official win and an unofficial NWS win.

John -- the old way of totalling the bouts for the fighters broke out NWS from official decisions.

When the folks here discussed adding NWS to the database, I was under the understanding that you would continue to total official results with NWS separate.

What happened???????????

Is the separation of NWS results from official results not desirable or what's the reason for them being added to the official results?

They should be separated from wins and losses and stated as such -- ND

NWS results are now separated from official results on the boxers' profiles. The number of NWS bouts and the total rounds boxed could also be shown.
