Post war Britain when people still respected one another and helped each other to get by through difficult times. A time when we didnt have hospital waiting lists. Children could play out and parents only fears were the roads and water. Traffic jams were rare. Schooling was good and children were diciplined. Maybe modern times with more money, better living conditions, mobile phones, computers, and all the things we now take for granted . On the other hand crowded cities, high crime rates, too many vehicles on the roads, a huge drug problem, little respect for each other and authority. Pick any time, give your reasons, it will be interesting.

I actually was, (1945). In many ways it was a perfect time to be born. I remember the Russians crashing a sputnik onto the Moon and putting the first man into space. All the Apollo missions by the Americans and the landing on the Moon in 1969. The 1966 World cup. The rock n roll years with Elvis Presley, Tommy Steele, Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran etc. Then came the sixties and the beginning of Merseysound when we hit back at the Americans and showed them what we could do. The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, The Swinging Blue Jeans etc. At the same time the Rolling Stones challenged the Beatles for chart position, the only group capable of that. Very exciting times but for most of us times were hard as wages were very poor. There were plenty of jobs and nobody needed to be out of work. I could go to the pictures and buy fish and chips all for less than 20p. My first wage was about £3.80. That was for 48 hours, the standard week in those days. I took home £3.51 and had to give my parents £1.50 board. I had a hard job buying clothes, bus fares to work and back, a bit of baccy and going out with my mates, all on the remaining £2.00. I had to save to buy shoes, they cost between £1.50 and £2.00. My Dad bought me my first suit £15.00, a collosal sum of money back then. If you were rich you could buy a Rolls Royce Corniche for about £8000.00 circa 1960. Phones then were a luxury and very few people had them. TVs were so expensive most people rented them. Wages during much of the sixties were frozen, the only people who got a pay rise were MPs and the Government. Why we stood for that I dont know. Great times, but hard times but I am still glad I lived through them.

School in the 50s was very diciplined when six of the best was the ultimate punishment. Most kids behaved and only rarely did the big stick come out. The police were feared by teenagers, not like today. The drug problem here in the UK during the late 60s was almost insignificant compared with today. Very few young people used them. You have to go back a long way to when we shipped people out to Australia rather than build prisons, for stealing a loaf of bread. In the sixties Australia invited us to live there and the one way trip cost £10.00 per person. You had to be pure white though because Australia was a very racist country. Canada I believe had a similar scheme.

I can fully understand why you prefer modern times but the truth is there has never been an ideal time to be born. Every time period has things for and against, I suppose its how you balance things out. Most young people find it hard to imagine a life before mobile phones and computers. As a boy I had a ten minute walk to a phone box to contact a friend. Today we can phone, text, email, go on facebook whatever from home or anywhere to talk to our friends, its a very different World these days and as far as communication goes things are very much better.

Great topic, Waylon. I was born in 1959, but would possibly prefer to have been born 10-15 years earlier. Had I been born in '49, I'd have been a student in the Flower Power era instead of the anachronistic jazz, blues, Dylan and Hendrix fan I was during the punk era. I would have enjoyed the sexual revolution and "free love" of the hippie generation rather than having just the two steady birds I had throughout my uni years (at least 1 more than Ian, Dave and Terry though!). Fifteen years earlier and I would have lived through the great years of rock'n'roll and had clearer memories of the '66 World Cup and the second Ali-Cooper fight, even though they were on my Mum and Dad's small, rented black & white telly.

Never!

The 1st time i went to the Killing Fields it was about 40 degrees and i sweating like god knows what, so i made the taxi stop near by to buy a fresh t-shirt. I just grabbed the 1st one at the stall, without paying much heed to what it was. It was only when i saw my photo's afterwards that i saw i had been walking around with an enormous skull emblazoned on the front of my t shirt as i perused the mass graves...

Then we went to the Tuol Sleng genocide museum, which was genuinely moving, but tiring, so i decided to smoke some weed in the toilets, to perk me up. The problem was that i then got the giggles when we were being shown this bed that prisoners were tied to and tortured, and i have on video, me guffawing "that looks like your bed Mike!" much to the amusement of no-one else.
