National PAL Info & Results

Post by boxmel »

This evening's bout sheets can be found at http://www.amateurboxing.com/2008NPbts.htm. I will also put in the results at the end of the sessions.

There will only be one evening session per day.

Monday night's results are now posted. I'll try and get a copy of the brackets but won't be able to post them, unfortunately. Don't have a way to upload them as brackets.

Caferro wins by RSC. :D I've not seen a guy who can score that many RSC's at the lower weights in the amateurs. He stops guys in the region quite frequently, too.

Kolya, what about:
Antonio Russell
Victor Pasillas vs. Joe Mukul
Raul Lopez
Thomas Willams
Jeremy Longoria
Gabina Saenz
Shem Pagan

Thanks!

There was one bout that was scheduled for tonight that should have been great. In the 132# class - Fidel Maldonado of Albuquerque, NM vs. Shemuel Pagan of Brooklyn, NY. Did anyone see it?

Shemp won a close won and TW schooled the guy he fought I guess.

Also, on a much more serious note; keep Edgar Ramirez, Caferro's opponent, in your thoughts-he had to go to the hospital later on this evening after he was RSC'd by Caferro; they said it might be a concussion.

Is the Gary A. Russell that is in the 106-pound class-15/16 bracket Gary Antonio or Gary Antwaan?

It is hard enough keeping track of the Russell brothers since they all have the same first name, but then many if not all of them have a middle name that starts with an A.

So does anyone have the complete rundown of the brothers? I know the first two are:
Gary - U.S. Olympian
Alan - just lost a bout at the PAL in the 141 Open class. The guy he lost to Michael Brooks is good, but he just got stopped by Jared Robinson from S.C. Is Robinson that good, did Brooks just get caught or was Brooks worn out from his battle with Alan Russell?

I will hope for a quick recovery for the boxer.

TW must be good as the guy you say he schooled, Derek Zugic, is a good boxer from Chicago.

The 132# open class is going to have some good bouts. Duran Caffero, Eric Fowler, and Shem Pagan are all talented. Then you have 2 boxers I haven't heard of, but could be talented in Medina and Wisdom. Should be some good bouts.

Other Russells are:
Antonio boxing at 15/16 106lbs.
Antwan 12 years old around 85lbs
Boosie 13 or 14 years old not sure of weight but he's bigger than Antonio
The youngest is only about 7 or 8 but he's just like the rest and will be a big problem when he turns 8 if he isn't already. We call him Zay Zay.

There older brother was pro - Gary "Fast Hands" Jones

Thomas is for real. From what Duran Sr. told me he was actually starting to showboat a little bit by the end because he was ahead so clearly. I was told it was a good match, but pretty clear on who won. And to think, I sparred with him before he had his first match.

Zugic and Williams were both out of gas in the second round. Zugic kept loading up for the "one punch KO" and Williams was outscoring him. Williams wasn't showboating in the third - he was trying to stay out of Zugic's way because he was exhausted. Williams did a good job against the taller (6'4") Zugic. I'm not judging so maybe I can get away with a comment here and there (plus I also told Zugic the same thing).

That doesn't quite sound like Thomas to gas out. Surprising. Either way; he won, which is the big thing.

Derek should not have been loading up since he is not a one punch KO kind of boxer. Derek is a busy guy with his career and sometimes his training suffers which might explain why he gassed out so early. He is a nice guy and at times looks great in the ring, I just wish he was able to spend more time training.

So are the semi-finals tonight or is it the quarters tonight? What is the schedule for tonight, tomorrow and Saturday? I'm assuming Saturday is the last day, is that correct?

It's also always a mistake to try to load up and take one punch against Thomas; his reflexes are pretty good and he'll see somebody telegraphing a punch like that.

I'm getting ready to put up tonight's bout sheets. All semis I think, since JO finals are tomorrow night and open are on Saturday. I'll also post the unopposed list.

Derek said he brought over his coach from Serbia who didn't tell him to box the way he was used to boxing and that's why he was loading up and not boxing.

It is an even bigger mistake for a guy who is a stand up boxer to try and do it.

THat would be news to me. I've known Thomas since we were 16 and 17 and I don't ever remember issues with asthma coming up. When I was there in February he was running on the treadmill in a surgical mask (at a good pace) to simulate high altitude.
