I know BBC showed it on Delay but was that because of Sky? I aint sure what was the first fight on Sky - especially hard to work out cause of the regional variations and stuff with ITV. HTV Wales would often show Tyson fights not live, even though Granada and Central would.

Lewis was one of the first to have a deal with Sky - think the Glen McCory fight was the last time he was on terrestial TV live (untill the Rahman fight). Although I can remember ITV showing the Weaver fight.

They plugged Lewis to try and entice us to buy it.

Seems so long ago, worrying. But when I think back, slightly more clearly than I was thinking when I wrote my column actually, I used to travel over to George Zeleny's house in Hertfordshire to watch the Sky fights with Claude and Steve Holdsworth. Good nights

Tyson-Douglas was shown live, or nearly live, on ITV as far as I recall. I have the fight with Reg doing the talking. Plus the Darkie one. I have a few Sky fights that were shown on other channels then re-dubbed by Darkie. I call them my Lee Perry tapes. I just hide them from the Germans. I think Tyson-douglas was shown later on Sky. Eurosport also.

Sky Sports was not launched until around 1990, even then there was scant boxing. They ran a few classics series at one point and over-dubbed fights.

ITV also ran Bowe-Holyfield II, Sky also have a version of the fight. At one point both Sky and ITV had a mideweek highlights show. Toney-Charles Williams was on the ITV one late at night, mid-week as well. I remember it vividly, I almost missed my paper round the next day.

I think Darkie was a football man prior to that. Although I have a 1980's fight, might be a Watson one, in which Darkie is at ringside. No sign of a mic and earphones though.

Bowe vs Holyfield 1 was definately on Sky, as was Lewis vs Ruddock. Alot of the early Sky fights was on Sky 1 if i recall.

I didn't have Sky till 1996 - so I don't know, but I am sure Tyson's ITV contract expired whilst he was champion. First I remember about the Boxing result was on the News the following day and there is no way I would have missed that.

i've got a honeyghan fight from 87 (vaca 1 or blocker?) and darkey gets in the ring afterwards to do an interview.

I thought so HH - cause I remember being gutted about Tyson fights not being shown. I was gutted to wait after Wackaday at 9:30 to watch them (cause in Wales we never got it live).

I know Darke mentioned doing the commentary for McCory's title win - assumed it was for radio cause that was on Terrestial TV.

I remember Saint and Greavsie showing the build up to the Tyson vs Douglas fight.

Yep the big fights were shown live on sky movies, although sky sports was around, but was free, or 'non-premium' - hard to believe now!

Sky sports showed them a few days later.

Then, when sky bought the rights to the premier league and saw off BSB, they introduced an extra sports subs fee and the boxing moved to sky sports.

Yes, I remember that - still in search for some of the full shows from Sky Sports Extra.... Trinidad vs DLH, Ruiz vs Holyfield 2 (I think)... Few others aswell.

Was this fight ONLY shown on Wire TV? Or was Wire TV a channel that showed other Sky Sports Shows. Cause whilst I didn't have Sky or Cable at this stage, I remember Lewis signing a multi fight deal with Sky, and I am bloody sure when the Foreman fight made the news (remember when Boxing topped the sports stories on News at 10!) it had the Sky logo on the video highlights.

Both fights were definately shown on Sports Night on the BBC on delay.

Remember Botha vs Tyson being on On Digital - my mate won tickets to see that fight thanks to On Digital!

does anyone remember just how good Sky'd Ringside xmas review of the year was? I think I still have the review of 92 on VHS somewhere. I once found the review of 91 by accident on VHS and it was like finding your dads jazz mags as a kid. Absolutely brilliant, Nunn v Toney and all that

Yes good article by Glynn - though the blame is laid squarely with Sky, and no mention of Frank's involvement, as far as I recall.
So none of the sorry affair was Frank's fault at all? I know he passed the buck on picking the opponent, has he avoided any of the PPV flak as well?
