Hand wrapping

Post by dbf »

I have often wondered if our American counterparts wrap their hands to a higher standard than British boxers.

I am constantly shocked when I see Joe Calzaghes hands in wraps with about 3 layers of duct tape on top. It seems that Rubio taught Khan one good thing and that was a decent way of wrapping his hands. Haye seems to opt for a similar fashion to Khan. But Hatton's looks wraps look a little ameturish to me.

Mayweather has said that since he got Garcia(?) on board to wrap his hands his problems had subsided somewhat. Are Calzaghes hand problems anything to do with the way he does his? I remember reading he warapping his own hands for a long time.

I understand that the wraps in training are different to those on fight night. Does anyone know the rules on how hand are to wrapped for a professional contest, as it seems there are so many different ways.

Just curious really.

He doesnt turn the Fist because his Elbows and Tendons are tight its the Tendons from the Elbows that help make a Fist and the Elbow that turn the wrist and puts the Thumb where it should be. :D

Every trainer wrap's hands differently (Some boxers even do their own)

It mainly down to boxers personal preferance,to some its 3 minute light wrapping, others its the full monty 30 mins each hand

The golden rule is NO tape to be applied over the knuckles (as Ive seen Foriegn trainer/seconds try to wrap tape in volume over the knuckles, making a so called knuckle-duster effect) a strict no under BBBOC rules

Also heard that he used to punch this rock hard heavy bag that wouldn't budge... in some actually ill adviced attempt to toughen up the hands.

Historically, British fighter have used much less bandage and tape when wrapping hands. For instance, look at Henry Cooper's hands in films and photos and you will see a style of wrapping far diferent from American fighters of the same era.In recent years, the British style of wrapping is very similar to what is done in America.

Also, for many years, British fighters never put any wrapping on their thumbs; this too has changed.Oddly enough, in his early title fights, Roberto Duran's hands were wrapped without any wrapping on his thumbs.

In his book he attributes his hand problems to when he was training for the Welsh ABAs his Dad used a rolled up carpet as a heavy bag.

When using a bag i always liked having wraps around the knuckle and thumb, and also liked to strap my wrist up well, as a mis hit sometimes damaged my wrist.

This isn't the result of having limp wrists :box:

yah I think it was William Joppy who said something about Tito's hands being rock-hard, and Hopkins (obviously) made a point about it and made sure someone watched over while Tito's hands were wrapped before their fight.

didn't Manny Steward 'invent' (develop, whatever) a style of hand wrapping, something like you end up with a 'ball' of wrapping in your palm which I guess helps with forming a proper fist, something like that anyway. I may have dreamt it.
