Best Aussie boxer not to win a world title.

Post by JSA »

seen this type of post on other forums so thought wouuld do an aussie specific one here.sorry for lack of originality. probably referring to more recent times(last 30 or so years).

IMO I would have to say Troy Waters has gotta be up there for sure.

Any thoughts.

Loads of the old timers come to mind here, especially some of the Aboriginal fighters. Dave Sands, Ron Richards Vic Patrick. And Charkey Ramon :TU:

hussein was a great fighter and maybe one of the best aus has produced but he did have his fair share of title fights
question is green better than hussein cause he won a world title
green beat an opponent no where in the same league as the opponents hussy had to fight to win a world title
also would have green beat adamek to win his title cause briggs did beat stripes during his career
if you made an aus top ten p4p than waters, tony mundine and hussein would rate higher than many of aus world title holders
was never able to watch many of the old fighters but did listen to a radio show a few years back and they had an interview with the voted best aus to never win title cant remember his name but he was a middleweight in the 70s and was tony mundines biggest rival he fought back in the days when middleweights ranged from welter to lhw
hurt his shoulder surfing consequently stopping him from having a title shot

Yes Hector and Mundine came up against Duran and Monzon respectively ., and no Interim alphabet titles unfortunately. Their Commonwealth titles were worth more than any of the bullsh*t titles going around today. I also think Paul ferarri and Dave Sands and of course Les Darcy are obvious picks.

All good choices. Darcy, Sands, Ramon and Thompson are all good picks. I've always thought that if Troy Waters was fighting when the welterweight division was slightly weaker he would have won a title for sure.

Henry is a top bloke, very generous with his time and always happy to talk boxing. Great to see him still involved in the game as a judge.

Another contender for the best local boxer never to win a world title would have been old timer Jack Carroll.

Jack who was a very skillful welter who fought between 1923 and 1938 with a record of 90 wins (38 by ko), 10 losses (3 by ko) with 4 draws.

He was never defeated from 1st April 1932 until he retired and fought many 15 round main events.

The Black Prince Peter Jackson would have to be in there as well.

His bout with Gentleman Jim Corbett was called off due to exhaustion after the 61st round.

Why hasn't Brute coughed up his 2 cents worth on this?

There is a legend that Barney Ross was going to defend his World Welterweight title against "some old guy in Australia named Carroll", but changed his mind when Maxie Rosenbloom, who had fought on some cards Carroll was on in Sydney said to Ross "Barney, if you fight that old guy you ain't gonna be World Champion no more."
