Latin American LH, who was the greatest?

Post by Martin Sosa Cameron »

Between the Latin American light heavyweights, who was the greatest? Angel Rodriguez, Jose Carattoli, Mauro Mina? Latin America had a lot of great fighters in all the divisions. Among the LH (I see only the eight classic weight: the "juniors" or "super" or "light" are in the traditional name, as, in this question, the "super middleweights"), and I remember the bests (Victor Galindez, Miguel Angel Cuello, Jorge Ahumada, Atilio Caraune, Fulgencio Obelmejias, Amado Azar, Avenamar Peralta, Guillermo Silva, Dogomar Martinez, Walter Matteoni, Luiz Inacio, Miguel Angel Paez, Vicente Rondon, Jose Torres..., for example), and I support that, not only the "bests", but the greatest, were Angel Rodriguez, Jose Carattoli and Mauro Mina

Only one victory of each one: Angel Rodriguez knocked out the giant Luis Firpo, Jose Carattoli beat Tommy Loughran, Mauro Mina win over Bob Foster

Here is the record of this trio; who deserve your vote?

Thanks for the info on these fighters Martin.
I was not real familiar with Rodriguez and Carratolli until reading this post and some others you have done.
The fighters you post about deserve much recognition that is for sure.
Im most familiar with Mina , so I guess from that standpoint and the fact he beat a great fighter in Bob Foster, I will go with Mina.I have Foster as a top 3 all time LH.

Of the three I'd go with Mina because I think all-in-all, he fought the tougher opposition.
However, I would be remiss if I didn't say I think Victor Galindez tops them all. No, he wasn't the prettiest fighter to watch, but he beat some good fighters on the way up and was twice champion, defending the title 10 times on the road. After winning the title, he beat Pierre Fourie (48-3) in Fourie's hometown in South Africa, beat future champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in Italy, twice beat always-tough Yaqui Lopez, twice beat tough American Richie Kate in the road, and after losing the title, regained it by KOing Mike Rossman. No a bad record for a fighter who I think is historically underrated

I'd rate Victor Galindez as the best South American LHW of all time, though of the 3 choices I'd pick Mauro Mina.

Dogomar Martinez 49-3 and never stopped, and Avenamar Peralta would have to be high on the list.

Dear Expug, Giacomino and Seamus,

Thanks you for your kind and valuable participation! Your arguments are strongs, of course, and as usual. Please, put your votes

I thinks in a same level are Carattoli, Rodriguez, Mina, Jorge Ahumada, Victor Galindez, Dogomar Martinez, Avenamar Peralta (brother of Goyo), Guillermo Silva, Vicente Rondon and Jose Torres...

Thanks, again!

Interesting that Mauro Mina never fought for a World title at LHW, but another Peruvian, Oscar Rivadeneyra, did.

Interesting indeed, considering who Mina fought and beat (Foster, Cotton, Towne, Von Clay, Hank, Goyo Peralta, etc..) and the only rival of note that Rivadeneyra beat prior to facing Spinks was Jerry Celestine.

A sign of the times, I guess.

P.S: Did you know that Rivadeneyra collected his purse for his fight against Spinks just last year? almost 25 years later.

It's quite an absurd story actually. After losing the Spinks fight, Rivadeneyra travelled to Peru before collecting his purse.

When he decided to comeback to the US he found out that his visa had been cancelled because he had overstayed it. He then arranged for his wife and kids to travel to the U.S. (they still had valid visas) and she collected the $66,000 purse with a power of attorney.

What happens next? The wife files for divorce and never sends a cent to Rivadeneyra.

20 years after the fact he is granted the visa, sues the wife and gets his money plus interest.
