Thaxton-Melero

Post by johnswan1 »

With this fight happening tomorrow evening live on ITV4 there hasn't been a lot of talk about it.

Is Melero any good? I had a look at his record and didn't really see wins of note on there. He also was KO'd in 3 by Romanov (despite the unusual Boxrec note stating "Diaz Melero was in clear control when he was hit with a good punch").

http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer

This is the type of fight where somebody a bit more clued up could catch the bookies out. They are currently going 8/11 on Thaxton and Evens on Melero.

Jon phoned in to Bunceys Boxing Hour yesterday and was his usual self. I do think he's beginning to slip now at this stage of his career and this has to be his last real opportunity outside of the British scene.

Edit: Changed Setanta to ITV4

Thought it was ITV?

I'm rooting for Thaxton as having the EBU title in England will open up lots of good fights. But I think Melero might be too fresh and mobile. Thaxton's had a great run, but this will be hard.

(Alternatively, maybe Romanov made hard work out of Melero. But my belief is Melero is a good boxer.)

Meleros young, has a lot of knockouts and even had Romanov on the deck before losing -- all reasons for me to beleiev he'll bring the curtain down on Thaxtons career tomorrow night.

Just came across this - Romanov seems to think that Melero gave him his toughest fight. This is an extract of an interview James Slater did for BBN back in May prior to the Thaxton fight. (Hope it's ok to reproduce here?)

http://www.britishboxing.net/news_3228- ... rview.html

J.S: Your last three fights have all been European title fight wins, do you feel you have really been on top form recently?

Y.R: Yes, for sure. I was in top form when I knocked then undefeated European champion Juan Carlos Diaz Melero out clean (in three rounds) right in his own backyard. I was also in excellent shape when I stopped Tontcho Tontchev (also in three rounds). My fight with Stefano Zoff (in Yuri's last fight, in October) was not my best performance. I had a bad cold going into that fight, but I still won (on points) and kept my title.

J.S: You KO'd Diaz Melero, do you think your power will be too much for Thaxton as well?

Y.R: I certainly feel I've got the tools to handle Thaxton. Sharpness and clean power shots will be the key to my success.

J.S: Have you ever been down as a pro?

Y.R: Yes. I was down in the third round against Diaz Melero, but got straight back up and then KO'd him.

J.S: And who has given you your toughest fight?

Y.R: I would say Diaz Melero. He was very highly ranked by both the WBA and the WBC at the time.

I think he's about 32 or 33 and balding. I might be wrong about his age. Melero seems fresh, fast and talented and I agree he'll win.

I really think Jono has slipped and I predict a stoppage win for Melero unfortunately. Btw you can get 3-1 for Melero by ko/tko or DQ at bet365 :TU:

Right, I'm going to have a good look at this tomorrow. This may well be one of those times when the bookies have no clue, and so install the home fighter as favourite. I believe something like this happened before the Hunter-Molitor fight too. This 3/1 on a stoppage win could well prove to be an excellent value bet. Thaxton definitely appears to be slipping and seemed out of his depth against Romanov. If anybody has a link to Melero footage it would be great as I couldn't find anything on youtube.

Ive not seen him but my mate is going along tonight and he asked me what Melero was like and I said he was 'fast and sensational' after reading the comments here !

But i noticed from his record he hasn't really travelled and that may count for a lot, plus Jon's southpaw stance and maturity.

I was interested to discover if his 11th round KO of Zoff was preceded by a dominating performance, and it seems it was:

20:40 ITV4 Billy.

Hold the punting pages, a Melero win inside the distance is 4/1 with Ladbrokes.

That's huge.

The way I see it, Thaxton comes out swinging. He has to force a fast pace if he hopes to win. By my reckoning he will be over-run by the 9th.

Thaxton hasn't looked good since the Meager fight and Meager has looked awful since. Thaxton's accuracy has gone awful - not sure why, just think he is shot.

I think Thaxton will lose on a cut.

That sums it up for me as well. Melero being 6/5 to win. That's very good odds and tempting to bet on. I'm not going to though. I’m am a Thaxton fan. I don’t want to be cheering the other guy on lol.

I didn't want to but I've bet massive on Melaro. It's easy money I think. Although I pressed submit with a heavy heart.

Always look on the bright side, eh. Thaxton will lose and Melero will look like wank cos he lost to Romanov who looked godawful vs Zoff
