Lewis turned in a very cautious performance against an old, washed up version of the body beautiful, right hand banger that once was Mike Weaver.Mensa07 wrote:didn't Lennox fight a Mike Weaver?

Are you reading The Last Great Fight by Joe Layden?teddy007 wrote:I think ive got the name wrong and will look at it tonight when i get in.Mensa07 wrote:didn't Lennox fight a Mike Weaver?

Read that afterwards, apparently it's the best interpretation of the Douglas v Tyson and examines them afterwards and how it affected them.

Skimmed through the book, read the lead up and chapters of the fight itself. it's a good one.
Ex champ Weaver was getting on by then, so not sure he'd be sparring Douglas...might have though.

I thought it was a decent boxing exhibition rather than overly cautious, and that right hand to finish it was an absolute peach!TerribleTerry wrote:Lewis turned in a very cautious performance against an old, washed up version of the body beautiful, right hand banger that once was Mike Weaver.Mensa07 wrote:didn't Lennox fight a Mike Weaver?

Yeah the finishing shot made up for, what was for me, an overly cautious showing on Lewis' part - he held all the aces so why didnt he open up sooner?oliverfennell wrote:I thought it was a decent boxing exhibition rather than overly cautious, and that right hand to finish it was an absolute peach!TerribleTerry wrote:Lewis turned in a very cautious performance against an old, washed up version of the body beautiful, right hand banger that once was Mike Weaver.Mensa07 wrote:didn't Lennox fight a Mike Weaver?
I remember being frustrated by his showing at the time..
ITV picked up that fight in the UK if I remember rightly

Funny thing with Lewis, he did seem to fight a bit more cautious for a while when he was in the USA.

Yes, it was on next-day delay on ITV.TerribleTerry wrote:Yeah the finishing shot made up for, what was for me, an overly cautious showing on Lewis' part - he held all the aces so why didnt he open up sooner?

I suppose he could have opened up earlier, but he still had to respect Weaver's power. After all, that's all Weaver had. If he'd been a bit more careless vs a guy whose only chance would have come if Lewis HAD been careless, he might have been criticised for an entirely different reason (see McCall and Rahman).
I agree Lewis could sometimes be over-cautious, but I was happy enough in this instance. Same with Tua - some didn't like the performance, but I thought it was sound.

Sounds like the kind of thing a young Michael Moorer would have done (in 1990).
Weaver was never 'young'.
Weaver was never 'young'.
Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
Douglas, incidentally, failed to beat the count in the controversial eighth round.
Meyran should have uttered No Mas himself.
PS: I'm no fan of Tyson.

Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
How did he fail to beat the count. He laid there watching Meyrans count and then wisely got up at 9.
He wasnt completely obviously f##cked like when Tyson was out.
PS no way would Douglas employ Weaver -- a 40 year old different size & style to Tyson.
It was Bert Cooper and Orlin Norris etc, the usual suspects for Tyson opponents training.
I think you're confusing stories here. Mike Williams was a body beautiful sparring partner ususally employed by Tyson.

Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
You may be referring to Mike Williams who was going to be the next big thing in the late 80s and reportedly floored Tyson in sparring. Anyway, Buster Douglas knocked him out in 1988 and it was all downhill from that.teddy007 wrote:I have been reading the story of Tyson Vs Buster upset and it says that team buster brought on in a young sparring partner called Mike Weaver(not 100% sure if thats the correct name) It goes on to say that he broke busters ribs and had to be sent home. I have also heard he was going to be the next big thing in the early nintie
s. Does anybody know what happened to him?

Mike Williams was the intended opponent (victim?) for Tommy Morrison's first defence of the WBO belt he won from Foreman. Williams withdrew on the day of the contest and was replaced by a fighter plucked from the crowd - TimTomashek - who stood in for a fight that would later be reclassified as a non-title fight.wouter wrote:You may be referring to Mike Williams who was going to be the next big thing in the late 80s and reportedly floored Tyson in sparring. A similar situation to the one that unfolded with Kimbo Slice's opponent on Saturday night, except there was to be no fairy tale ending for Tim!

Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
Fred Whittiker a journyman heavy sparred both Tyson and Douglas in Japan in the week before the fight, the spar with Tyson went a few rounds, the spar with Douglas lasted 1 and a half rounds, because Douglas got tired.
So out of those sparring sessions who would you think Whittiker picked to win?
He said 'Douglas will knock out Tyson' .
Hope he put some money on that.

what i can remember of Mike Williams ,he was built like a brick sh*thouse, but was a bit muscle bound when boxing.
He was also World Heavyweight Champion.

Well its a TEN count you retard.
And his performance proves that the ref made the right decision.
Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
Cheer up, son. It only took Buster 15 minutes to get up from 'nine' - but, hey, you're an expert and must be right (cough, cough).overhand_right wrote:bennie wrote:Exactly. Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
I've watched Douglas v Tyson numerous times, and yes the bit between 9 and saying 10, is an awful longtime. Anothre ref would of waved the fight over.
But in the grand scheme of things i'm glad that Douglas was allowed to carry on fighting, we would of missed out on one of the biggest shocks in boxing history.
Also Douglas would of missed out on a huge payday against Holyfield

Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
I know, thats why i was using it.
The thing with Douglas is Meyran was concentrating on his eyes when he got up.
His judgement was proven to be totally sound considering how Douglas was able to easily handle Tyson and splatter him in rds 9 & 10.

Re: Mike Weaver? Tyson Vs Douglas upset
Given his insulting performance against Holyfield (there were rumours of Douglas ordering pizza to the sauna whilst in his hotel during fight week) I would like to have seen Douglas counted out in the act of rising to be truthful.
As focused and single minded as he was for the Tyson fight, the obscene pay day he received for the Holyfield fight robbed him of all his ambition.
The fat so and so actually ate himself into a diabetic coma following his retirement!
