COMPLETE LIST OF BRITISH WORLD CHAMPIONS

Post by overhand_right »

Anyone have it?

Talking the recognised belts: WBC, WBA, IBF.

None of the other b#llocks (not to say the above aren't responsible of hideous crimes, but the ones thathave come after are beyond ridic)

Wonder how big is it?

If you don't acknowledge WBO, then you'd have to exclude such luminaries as Herbie Hide, Enzo Maccarinelli, Alex Arthur, etc.

Seriously though, in the past year or two, we've had Hatton, Haye and Calzaghe holding "real" belts, being the top man at their weight.

As much as I don't like a man calling himself world champ when he's a glorified British champ, I do find the "lineal champ ", "Ring mag champ" debates tedious and laboured. I think some of those BS writers are taking it too far.

Also, if we exclude WBO, should we draw the line before we get to IBF as well? Harry Mullan used to write that guys like Duke McKenzie and Glenn McCrory became world champs only because of the (then) new, British biased IBF belt.

It seems the real debate these days, is not who the real champ and who the chump champ is. But rather, can a promoter keep a fighter active and earning to his potential, without such baubles as WBO and WBU?
