Is this 10 rounds, dont think hatton has been past 6, so i think burton will beat hatton on points, wether the ref will give it to burton is a different story

Can't see Warren and Billy Graham choosing Burton for their man unless they know something. Check out Burton's weight over his last few fights. He'll be killing himself to get down to 147.

The thought had crossed my mind bennie but Robs weight is being spot checked and he is just fine, he is losing it gradually and everything is OK. The problems with weight come when he does late notice jobs, he has had ample time to prepare and is perfectly happy!

Well, in that case, only the ref can beat Burton. That's what a leading trainer who posts on here said of the fight.

Rob's weight is perfect. There is no problem there,he's doing the weight properly and is feeling strong. So i reckon he'll stop Hatton late..whichever way it goes tho,its gonna be great! :TU:

Gutted I cant go..im struck with the confidence of the Burton camp, I picked Rob in my preview but was no way near as certain as Dave was...Burton rang me once to do an interview and seemed a dead nice bloke..hope he does it!

Very surprised at the lack of exposure either of these two have had thus far in their career. We all know Sky do like to hype up sibblings or fighters with boxing in the blood (Joe Bugner Jnr, The Minter lads).

I haven't actually seen any of these two perform, although judging by what people have posted here it is hard not to back against Burton. It seems alot who have seen Matthew are not overly excited to say the least.

Below is the interview I did with Rob..

Once in a fighter’s life comes a real defining test. On May 6th in Barnsley, that one moment in time comes to tough Yorkshireman Rob Burton when he defends his Central area welterweight title against Manchester’s 'Magic' Matthew Hatton (sibling of light-welterweight contender Ricky).

Rob’s is a story that epitomises fighters of his ilk: hard fought wins, hard fought losses yet still that driving ambition to achieve what he set out to do when he turned pro at the relatively late age of 29. "This is another step for me,” Rob told me in his gruff White rose accent. "When I turned pro I said I wanted to win the British title. If I can do that I can retire happy but I’m not going to become a journeyman. I’m no Peter Buckley."

Rob first came to prominence in January 2002 when he stopped Peter Dunn to claim the vacant Central area title. Sadly, it wasn’t a catalyst to future success. "It all went wrong after I won the title. Ringside Promotions went to Huddersfield with Hare and Robinson. They didn’t care about me, didn’t phone me as they didn’t think I’d sell tickets outside Barnsley."

Then started the late calls with Burton being given definite 'opponent' status. He was fed at minimal notice to the likes of Andy Halder and
Donavan Smillie. “Against David Walker I was called when I hadn’t trained
for two months. I suffer from hay fever you see. But the money was good and I couldn’t turn it down, that’s what we are here for, after all".

The Walker defeat was one of four on the bounce and a lot of fighters would
have considered their position after such a run. Not Burton, who rebounded
when he fought David Keir in May 2003. He won in nine hard rounds. It was a titanic struggle that made Boxing News’ top ten fights of the year. "We knew Keir was going to come out throwing lots of punches. Despite being floored everything went to plan. I stopped him late."

Now comes Burton’s biggest night, a fight his promoter Dave Coldwell has been after for a long time. “Dave’s been trying to get this for ages and in the end all we did was phone up allegedly and it got sorted. I’ve not seen anything of Matthew Hatton but I’ve looked at his record and there’s nothing that scares me (Rob has undoubtedly mixed in a higher class). I’m not surprised he lost to David Keir on a cut, Keir’s a dirty fighter."

That’s the main comparison on the records of these guys. Whilst Keir beat
Hatton, as previously mentioned he was stopped by Burton. Presumably, this offers another source of confidence for an already confident camp.
Sadly, the contest won’t be for the English title. "The Ingles got there first with Chris Saunders who will be fighting Marcus Portman. I was disappointed at first but I’m not now." All these factors have led to Burton being very confident indeed. ”People think he’s been brought in to beat me but I don’t know where they’re getting that idea from. I think I’ll stop him, probably late. I work better over ten rounds. 6x2s and 6x3s are just too short for me. I start slowly and like to grind fighters down. These shorter distances don’t do me any good, I’m only just warming up by the sixth round."

So we are left with an old throwback fight. The up and comer faces the wily old battlehorse. Who will win out? All I can say is that a lot of
smart money will be on Burton to prove 'Magic' Matthew is just an illusion.

He was a top lad, sounded confident then and seems even more so now..

Matts problem is that he isnt exciting, especially compared to his Brother..its sink or swim on Thursday night

Good thread. I'm looking forward to this fight much more than McDonagh-Pryce. Burton is a hardened pro; Hatton young and untested. If my memory serves me correctly, the Manchester man has never even been past six rounds and his record is ludicrously padded. I can only assume Dave Coldwell pinned allegedly up against the wall in the negotiations because this match seems too 50-50 for most of Frank's fights.
Indeed, I've been trying to work out what Frank and Billy Graham must 'know'. We only have to see from Ricky Hatton's record, that they do like matching their men with fighters into their 30s. Burton is into his 30's. But home advantage cancels that out.
Good match.

I pick Hatton to win on points or stoppage after 6 rounds, but I do have a concern over Matthew getting cut and losing that way.

Excellent to see an Area title on the line which is a fair reflection of the contest and not some nonsense international title. :TU:

Yes, co-promoter Dave Coldwell's influence clearly kicked in here. He's a former Central Area champion himself.

I've gone for Hatton ( I assumed he was the house fighter ) but I don't know a helluva lot about Burton.
How did the Hatton stopage loss come about, cuts was it?

Well this thread has sparked my interest anyway.

How on earth did Hatton manage to get outpointed by Perky Kirk? Must have been a dodgy decision surely, I seem to recall reading that it was.

What with Anderson v Choi this looks an intriguing class at Fight Skool tonight...

Apparently it was 11:30pm by the time Hatton got in the ring to face Kirk that particular night at the M.E.N. This could explain why his performance might have been below par.

I thought Matthew won clearly, can't say I was overly impressed and I consider his brother the much better fighter at the same age. However, he's still learning and I am sure with get to British title level.

People get a grip Matthew Hatton isnt worth a toss.

I see so many excuses here already ,the ref should have thrown him out of the ring for holding but didnt have the balls to do it.

Mind u it was a nice touch seeing FW jumping up and down waving hatton on..........like he gives a toss.Pity he wasnt around for the post fight interview.
