Darren Sutherland

Post by johnswan1 »

Wondering if anybody has heard any more with regards to Irish fighter Darren Sutherland. He said after the DeGale defeat at the Olympics that it was his last amateur fight and that he'd be turning pro before the end of the year. In what I've seen of him so far he looked powerful, but was somewhat one dimensional in the fight against DeGale, whom even now he still maintains a record of 4 wins to 2 over. I'd imagine it's more likely he'll remain in Ireland for now - the country really takes to their boxing and the likes of Dunne, Duddy & Lee have all had excellent support and big turn outs at their fights. I've love to see the rivalry continue at pro level between Sutherland and DeGale.

Also, I heard he is featuring in a documentary called SAVIOURS currently on show in Irish cinemas, focussing on the struggles of three lads trying to better their lives in an inner city boxing club in Dublin named St Saviours. It was filmed for two years from 2004-06. Anybody seen this?

I'm looking forward to seeing him in the pro's, think he looked a bit more predictable in the amateurs because most others in that code just move and throw the occasional shot. The pro's should suit Sutherland more.

here's a recent interview with him

One of the few Olympians who looked like they would make it as a professional.
