silkov, someone agrees with you regarding the benny lynch story being transformed onto the silver screen.
there`s been one made and due for release quite soon, its a biggish budget british movie with robert carlyle (of trainspotting fame) playing lynch.

actually Bubi you have a point, the real story you know the non-nazi despite his portayals by the political elements, kind of a "shindlers list" of the boxing world. That aside from his feats in the ring with Louis et al.

Could happen you know, would make a good film. good shout

Yeah I agree the Joe & Max story left out a lot of important facts & antcidotes. The Nazi hiding wasnt played out in full effect the "coke" thing was cool, But they didnt do the history real good or what they did in between fights & after the careers were over ! They skipped to much.
Max has as much to offer as say Braddock does.

there was a movie..."the joe louis story" that had boxer coley wallace plaing the bomber. it's not hard to find in the video stores and in those barrelss of bargain videos in places like walgreens. not bad. low budget. actual clips of louis' real fights interspersed.

also, one of john l. sullivan. turkey. harder to find and not worth the search.

aaron pryor would make a great story. from the peak to the depths to a personal redemption. plus, for once the fight scenes of his earlier matches would look more authentic than the real ones. (sorry, couldn't resist) plus...they'd have to deal with the little black bottle. still...a good story. most of films about boxers would now be made for television, which makes some of them possible as theatre box office release is so hugely expensive now.

Battling Siki, (if not mentioned here before). The Swedish author, Torbjorn Saefve, wrote a novel book on him.

Barney Ross had a film made about his life, it was to be called The Barney Ross Story, they did make the film but under a differnt title ( which I don`t know the name of).
Wouldn`t it be good if they made a re-make, back then they changed the name because of the trouble Ross got himself into because of his addiction to drugs.

barney ross's life story was made into a movie in 1957. the title was the same as his book.....monkey on my back....(slang term for drug addiction.....well, EVERYBODY may not know that). he was played by cameron mitchell.

ross also sued ...and won a settlement, probably out of court....claiming the great boxing movie, body and soul, starring john garfield...was partly based on his life. in the movie garfield's father owned a small store and was killed in a robbery and garfield became a boxer because his family needed the money....and this was also true of barney ross. the rest of the movie had nothing particular to do with ross.

the book I have is No Man Stands Alone The Barney Ross story by Martin Abramson.

The only other book I have got by him is a 1942 book titled 'Fundamentals of Boxing'.
Have you still got the book -Monkey on my back-? very intersted if you have any more info on it....seeing as we are friends again.

tony...sorry...i don't have the book any more...haven't had it for a long time.

friends AGAIN? when were we not friends? you must remember i am the master of the needling retort and known world wide for my classic bon mots. just because i may go after you on a thread...such as the hagler one... doesn't mean i don't like you. there are so few boxing fans these days we have no one to argue with but oursleves. if i didn't think your comments weren't worthwhile at all, i wouldn't bother to respond to them.

plus...i am practicer of massive retaliation. for example, if someone bumps up against me and doesn't apologize, my reaction is to burn down his garage.

So good to have different opinions, makes for good discussions.
Everybody rates fighters differently, except for the sheep, we all look out for different characteristics to find our ideal.
I once, in my ignorance, dismissed the name Charley Burley, and decided to do a little research to add to my side of the argument, lo-and-behold it opened my eyes to even more great fighters and showed myself to be a novice in the fight history of the game.
Glad we have exchanged our opinions.

And why stop at the garage?
