Thought Peter was really poor tonight. Don't want to take anything away from Vitali after a four year lay-off but did noone tell Peter he was gonna be fighting a guy with a height & reach advantage?

I think people are being very negative about this fight. Vitali came back and gave Peter (mostly recognised as the number two afler wlad) a boxing lesson after 4 years out.

I thought it was an excellent performance.

Peter was always an overrated fighter, Vitali still looked the same as 4 years ago though and would smash Haye.

Peter was always fighting this way, he's just a bulky fighter who cheats his way to a KO.

It was Williams Vs Vitali except Williams showed much more heart.

Good to see Vitali win but the heavyweight division is fooked now. There's no way that Vitali is the same fighter as he was 4 years ago, not after a potentially career ending injury(which is what made him retire in the first place) like he had, plus he went straight from inactivity to a title fight against one of the top heavyweights in the world and made Peters look like HE was the one who had been out for 4 years.

The heavyweight division is dead to me. :witzend:

The only glimmer of hope is David Haye, but even IF he is the real deal, there is nobody exciting or worthwhile for him to fight! :x

Vitali fought an excellent fight. He showed how it's done. I suspect he won't save the division by unifying with Chagaev and staying busy. To me, it looks like he chose the right time (after Peter was dropped by McCline) and will probably bow out again at 37.

It's a real shame. Despite injuries he could have dominated most fighters with his reach and made some solid title defences.

Obviously a very successful man, but lived off that Lewis fight for far too long. Instead of carving out a title reign of his own, he was more interested in getting ppl to think Lewis was scared off from a rematch.

It's much better watching Vitali go to work, than Wlad. (Let's not forget VK looked awful vs Sanders, though.) There is some quality at heavyweight, especially if Povetkin beats Wlad and Haye does well.

What really depressed me was to see an "heir apparent" like Solis looking as fat as Peter.

This fight just cements Lennox Lewis' legacy even more!!!

An ageing Lewis at the end of his career managed to bludgeon Vitali in a come from behind defeat over FIVE years ago, yet Peter who is in his prime cannot even make any sort of impression on a ring rusty version of Vitali, who is now the very same age that Lewis was 5 years ago. :o

I bet Lennox was in fits of laughter watching Peter last night!!!! :DDD

Vitali was beating a horridly out of shape Lewis. Who knows what would have happened, if not for the cut. Lewis showed some power, and had a bit of luck that night. Which is good for Lewis.

Vitali really could have been bigger in boxing as he had America on his side, in that defeat. Ppl tried to twist the fight saying it was a butt that caused the cut. Instead of getting on with it, VK seemed to think he had done it all (vs an old Lewis).

Ppl were watching him, HBO and Ring were all over him. I know some injuries got in the way, but I can't help thinking what a waste of talent. Someone who can do what he did last night, should not be away so long.

Hopefully Povetkin stops Wlad, setting up the superfight, Povetkin-Vitali.

we need povetkin and haye to step up and mix things up a bit.

then we have an interesting division.

what with a comebacking vitali.

we would have some interesting match ups again.

last night was so predictable.

peter never stood a chance against that style. :shame:

Vitali certainly implemented that style well though, didn't he? I like how he used his reach, how he used subtle sidesteps, and how he kept mixing in power shots, in controlled fashion.

Just look at his brother. Wlad had to hold on for dear life, turn his back in clinches, and get up off the floor 5 times to beat Peter on points.

I would just like to iterate that I do not blame Peter for taking Bukowski's advice & giving up. I actually think the corner should've pulled him out two rounds beforehand (if only to save me watching him plod about for another six minutes) & I do blame him for being a fat seemingly unmotivated git.

Vitali needs to fight again in Feb. He looked good last night. What next for Peter, can he come back?

I always thought Peter looked horrible on the way up. But that he looked good in the Toney rematch.

He blew it after the Toney rematch, IMO. He should have lost more weight, stayed busy, had tune ups, develop his technique. Can't have heped getting knobbed around by the WBC, but you have to be prepared for when your chances come.

You mean you wanted to see another 4 rounds of shite?

Haye should offer to fight Vitali for free because he'll KO the slow giant in under 3 rounds. Vitali was open to the right hand over the top all night. Someone like Haye who jumps in with the right will land flush and when Haye lands flush we see what happens.

Vitali certainly does have low hands. But I'm not so sure Haye knocking him out would be so straightforward. Even though Haye has blasted out some tall, world class fighters (Macca 6'4, Gurov 6'5) at cruiser.

Also, is there any sign that Vitali has chin problems?

No signs Vitali having chin probs but if the right shot lands with his chin up in the air hes going down, you just can't lay your chin out to dry like that. He relies on better speed, reactions, and big reach/height advantages. But hes breaking all the rules and if someone throws the right fast enough with his chin up in the air hes going down. His legs looked pretty weak to me last night too.

Old bones Ian wrote:Watch Chad Dawson tonight, cheer yourself up.

And it shows that Danny Williams may have alot of faults, but he'd never quit like Peter did.
You'd have to cut Williams' hands and legs off to stop him. He's got unbelievable heart, and he said that he didn't even think about quitting against Klitschko in 2004, even though he was up and down like a yo-yo in that fight.

David Haye may be fast and hits hard, but I think Vitali would deal with him. He'd certainly be aware of the threat Haye poses and would plan accordingly.

I was referring to open scoring in general, not just last night's fight in particular. Last night just highlighted the inherent flaws of the concept. And yes, as a boxing fan, I would like to have seen the fight reach a more natural conclusion.
