Did anyone meet Leon Spinks on his recent UK visit?

Yes it's very disturbing to see Evander talking these days... after the Toney fight he seemed hardly to be able to get a coherent sentance out. It was noticeable that in the run up to the Rahman fight Evander seemed much sharper and his speech much better than it had been for a while... this after quite a layoff.
Its like people say that Riddick Bowes speech has improved a lot to what it was in about the late 90s.... there can be some recovery if fighters layoff....... but god forbid that Bowe is allowed to make a comeback.
My nightmares are filled with visions of Holifield vs Bowe 4 and Holifield vs Tyson 3...... none of these guys should be allowed to fight anymore imo... especially Bowe and Holifield.

silkov wrote: I think for a while his inate talent and courage allowed him to continue to compete.... his wins over Mercadoe and Lopez for instance were good performances.... but it's doubtful that he trained much even for these fights. By the time Leon started fighting as a Cruiserweight it was murder for him to make the weight and this is a big factor in his losses to Delon and Quawi. The QUawi fight was the worst imo... Leon looked as if he barely had the energy to walk, and spent most of the fight on the ropes taking a terrible pounding...... I remember hearing people in the crowd screaming at Leon to get off the ropes but he just didn't have the strength. This is the fight which really finished him I think. I think after that he had no confidence anymore and his punch resistance pretty much disintergrated. One thing I always admire Leon for is that he had so much courage..... even in his latter fights he didn't lose for lack of courage.... it was just that he couldn't take it anymore.
.
On the copy I have of the Leon Spinks-Qawi fight it says that Leon weighed 15st 4lbs in his previous fight. Thats a lot of weight to lose.

Spinks was one of those high-energy McGuigan-type fighters who burn out quickly. He was ferocious in winning the Olympic gold in 1976 with a stoppage of the brilliant Cuban Sixto Soria - and in beating Ali in his seventh fight in 1978. But he burned himself out in those two intense years and there was no rekindling the fire.
Even before beating Ali an Italian by the name of Alfo Righetti had held him to a draw, which proved that, unless he was firing on all cylinders, he was beatable. And after Ali, well, the cylinders needed replacing.
I remember watching Gerrie Coetzee spark him in a round in 1980. A year later Larry Holmes also massacred him in three. There was a case for saying he should have quit then.

Spinks well beat Righetti on points mate, the draw was Leons previous fight with Scott LeDoux.

Did I hear a whisper that Scott LeDoux has offered to be George Foremans comback opponent, I'm sure I heard it somwhere?

I've never seen the Spinks-LeDoux fight but I heard that they both looked very poor that night.

Saw Scott LeDoux fight Bruno at Wembley in 1983. He was sensible enough to go down when hit, and stay down. Spinks was never that sensible. Larry Holmes must have hit him with a 100 right hands before it was all over.

i have the ultra rare spinks/ledoux fight.

i woudlnt call spinks poor. he pretty much kicks ledoux arse while trying to tolerate all of ledouxs bag of cheap dirty tactics.

no way was that fight 'a draw'.

kind of like norton kicking ledouxs arse for 8 rds then ledoux knocking him down in the 10th & getting a draw.

Thanks for the feedback Overhand, like I've said I've never seen the fight so can only go on what I've read and heard. Cheers.

I must say that Scott Ledoux always seems to get a bed rap, yet I think the guy was a pretty decent tough fighter.... gave fighters like Spinks and Norton among others good fights........ he was a good toughie.... I think he had a exciting brawl with RonLyle too. Damn good commentator I think also..... 8) :TU:
