Roy Jones gets his Micky Vann...
Just been tipped off that Jay Nady is refereeing the big rematch between Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver on May 15. Nady to Jones is what Micky Vann is to Hatton.

Yeah, but let's be honest, it's been his opponents who've needed Nady, not Roy. Apart from the Tarver fight, Roy's hardly lost a round, let alone been cut, hurt and dragged into a nip-and-tuck struggle and despite being shattered in the first Tarver fight he went for it in the championship rounds.
Made me laugh when John Ruiz said the referee wouldn't let him fight his fight. Well, the referee didn't make him stand there just trying to feint Roy did he?
It will be very interesting to see how Roy does in the Tarver rematch. Will the time he's had to get back down to the weight mean he'll be somewhat rejuvenated or is he just plain gettin' old?
While I've not warmed to the man I've seen in interviews, between the ropes Jones has been superb and the most dominant fighter of his era.

Nady got a lot of unfair stick for his alleged refereeing bias in Jones/Ruiz. I just rewatched the fight a few nights ago, and it's clear that Ruiz's problem wasn't that Nady wasn;t letting him fight his fight, it's that his opponent wasn't letting him fight his fight. After a few solid shots early, Jones started to consistently tag Ruiz with sharp shots whenever he tried to close the distance, and even when he managed to bull Jones into the ropes and land some solid body shots (which never seemed to bother Jones - he has as hard a midsection as anyone in the business), Jones was landing nice little body shots and short uppercuts of his own - not enough to really hurt Ruiz, but enough to take him out of his rush-and-maul game plan.
And of course that left Ruiz with having to try to outbox Jones in the center of the ring, which is something that no one has ever managed to do - even Tarver against a drained Jones only did effective work when Jones was trying to rest on the ropes.
Now if Nady had refereed something like 20 Jones fights in a row, and even when the opponent insisted on a different ref wound up in the role of ringside judge, well, then there might be a fair analogy to be made with Hatton/Vann.

Nady did his job well in the Jones v Ruiz fight. Correct me if I am wrong, but wrestling, clinching and mauling were not a part of the rules since the Marquis of Queensbury rules were amended.
I remember writing a preview on the fight and I said then that the choice of referee would make a huge difference to the outcome of the fight. If Ruiz had been allowed to maul and spoil like he normally is, then Jones nmight have had a very rough night of it. Once Ruiz realised he wasn't going to be allowed to do that, he suddenly realised he doesn't know how to do anything else, and thus, did nothing.
Nady isn't the problem, it's all the other referees who fail to apply the letter of the law.

Nady did an abysmal job reffing Ruiz-Jones, everytime Jones pulled Ruiz's head down Ruiz was warned to keep his head up, everytime Ruiz landed punches to the sides of Jones body above the beltline he was warned to keep his punches up. It was absurd, at one point Jones' feet even left the canvas because he jumped and pushed Ruiz's head down hard and Nady did nothing. He's a terrible referee, he makes too much noise and interferes with the flow of a fight all the time because he's in love with the sound of his own voice.

These ref-fighter relationships are quite intruiging. Larry O'Connell was an open admirer of Barry McGuigan and was given the job to referee the McGuigan-Jim McDonnell fight at Manchester in 1989. McDonnell objected to the appointment of O'Connell and got his way (O'Connell didn't speak to him for years after). But the fight ended in round four when Micky Vann - somewhat prematurely according to many - decided that McGuigan's cut eye was too badly cut for him to continue and waved it off.
I doubt O'Connell would have done the same thing. Smart move by Jimmy Mac.

The only other ref. I'm sure has handled more than one Jones fight is the venerable Arthur Mercante Sr. (fresh from the Rumble in the Jungle...), who has done at least two. I remember laughing when he admonished David Telesco to stop the in-ring jawing in his fight vs. RJJ. "Challenger assessed a one-point deduction for excessive talking..." ;)
