I have a day-after newspaper account: Bass W-10 Mack @ NY, May 6, 1929. BoxRec has it May 26. Is the May 6th a new bout, and we should keep the May 26th bout, too? Or is the May 26th bout wrong, and it should really be May 6th? (My library research has not yet taken me to May 26th; so I have no DANAs to compare.)

The sixth looks ok. Boxrec has a fight on the 26th in NY and a fight the 28th in Pittsburgh. That's was an overnight train ride in those days. Not likely. Also, a point of interest. Another boxing site states Benny was the first champion from Philadelphia. Cyberboxingzone (great rep) has Philadelphia Jack O'brien as lineal Lightheavyweight champion with his win over Ruby Bob in ought 5. Boo! hiss! to that other site. Kudos to Cyber and Boxrec.

There definitely was one for the 6th. I have the newspaper account. The one for the 26th is the questionable one. ric

Sorry Ric. I edited my mistake out (needs veified). I was trying to point out the 26th was probably erroneous due to travel time just in case the original source document shows the 26th. I also wanted to take the opportunity to pass on an incorrect statement made by another site.

Thanks, $bill. I wasn't commenting negatively on your post. (That was the purpose of the smilie.) I was just emphasizing that the bout of the 6th appears documented, as your last post recognizes. I always appreciate your historical comments. I find them fascinating. What memories you must have. My grandfather used to frequently say, "Memories: Life's handshake with the heart. Same price!"

I entered the 26th bout direct from the 1981 Ring Record Book. It doesn't have the bout on the 6th so I will delete the 26th entry until (and if) someone finds contemporary evidence for this bout. I will check New York Times next week.
