Steven Luevano V Billy Dib

Post by steve689 »

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere.

What did everyone make of Luevano's win and "The Kid" finally being exposed as all flash and no substance? Firstly, despite my general dislike of Billy's attitude and his inability to cut the ring down effectively, I thought that the Top Rank commentators were out of sync giving Luevano all 12 rounds. They even applauded in the final round when Dib landed a right hand as if it was the only punch he landed all night.

Don't mistake me, Luevano won hands down only it wasn't a one sided beat down as the Americans say. Luevano appears to be a solid belt holder but I don't think he's in the elite level. He counters well with the robotic one twos and found a home for the right hook but Dib's poor tactics and wading in aggression made it easier work. Luevano has been eased in now as WBO boss but it's time to look for unifications to earn real recognition. I don't he think looked as smooth or fluid as the night he dismantled Nicky Cook, but got the job done effectively.

A no-frills, good basic boxer but one who will always thrive at this level and probably falter in the highest class. He could maybe unify with Robert Guerrero who is in a similar position to Luevano (good recent away win, alphabelt holder and lost to a man he probably should have beaten). There are definite career parallels there.

Any thoughts?

I generally agree, the Featherweight devision isn't too hot at the moment. Larios is still a "champ" of sorts and he looks out of sorts also.

He is quite dull to watch Luevano, doesn't have much pop and has been hurt at times. I can't see him reigning for long - but could beat Guerrero and Larios.

i thought the commentators were way off. a lot of the rounds were hard to score. Dib though i feel should have had a couple of points off too. he is a very unlikeable guy. not saying that because of his showboating style because i like naz and eubank but he was very dirty and through a lot of cheap shots including one after the bell.
his corner gave him crap advice and also told him he won the first round which he clearly lost.

Saw Dib get a 'gifted' denison in Vegas and then in his last fight they gave him a draw when the African clearly won (The IBO ordered an immediate rematch).

After the first round when Dib screamed in Luevano's face, what did he say something like YEAH, THATS MINE? From then I was even more hoping that he would get KOed.

I think Luevano won almost all the rounds, Dib did little apart from foul and lunge in and miss. Luevano controlled the fight and hit him every time he came in with two or three punches.

Luevano may not be the most crowd pleasing boxer i've seen, but he's hard to beat. In his last 5 fights his met boxers with a combined record of 120-6, so he must be doing something right.
I'd like to see him take on Mario Santiago in a rematch, there first fight was a hard one to score, and would be good to see if Luevano has learnt from it.

Dib was shown up in his fight before Luevano. The featherweight division is a bit dead at the moment needs a few stars in it to light it up.

I think Chris John is the fourth man in the group, with his WBA bauble? John could realistically be the best of the poor bunch but he is wiling his best years away fighting fringe contenders in Indonesia instead of staking his belt on the line and trying snare another one to establish a status as the best. I know he narrowly beat Marquez and has fitness and stamina but Derek Gainer, Tommy Browne and Jose Rojas are the best names other than JMM on his record, which shows he is fighting at the level below top class.

Dib was clearly beaten but not by the margin those two Top Rank clowns were making it sound like.

The way they kept giggling and giving each other a reacharound made me wonder what they were adding to the telecast.

Crikey, they were almost as deluded as The Colonel! :o

Isn't Gamboa a featherwieght now? Surely it won't be long before he is challenging for a title.

To be fair, Dirk and I have been saying he's all mouth and no trousers for 18 months.

And Luevano ain't even a top feather.

Gamboa's next fight is allegedly for a world championship.

Featherweight is a bit short of talent at the moment, but it will soon turn around. Its usually one of the strongest divisions.

Gamboa will be rushed into a championship fight soon, i'd rather he got a few more rounds under his belt, but its hard to do when he punches that hard.
Still not convinced he will have a long run at the top level, his chin might not be as strong as the rest of his game.

I have no idea why Dibb go this fight, he's not entertaining and Luevano didn't have to face him.

Luevano is a steady sort of fighter nothing spectacular just keeps chipping away with wins and he's building a decent little resume, the Cook win looks better after Cook won the WBO 130 title.

I hear Luevano could face Juarez in a catchweight fight between 130 & 126 early in 2009. Thats a good match for Luevano decent money around $250,000 i'd guess and it's winnable.

Luevano not going to have that WBO babble too long with Santiago rematch, Meza Clay, Gamboa and you mention
Juarez good solid but unspectatular fighter, but he's probably going to lose that title soon.
