The linear title is no official title. When Briggs beat George Foreman, Foreman had already been stripped of his title, but because he still hadn't been beaten for the championship he was billed as the linear champion, the man who beat the man etc.
The term "linear title" is highly subjective and incorrect as well, since the lineage has been broken a couple of times in history, after Tunney and Marciano for example.
