AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Does anyone know if Julie or anyone will be posting results from the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico? The tournament starts on October 25th.
I would like to be able to follow our boxers as they progress through the tournament. If anyone is going and would be willing to post information about the bouts, that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm here in Guadalajara Dennis, so I can give info on the bouts. The tournament starts on saturday. Saw the US team, they arrived today. Haven´t seen Julie though.

AIBA is going to give live coverage according to their website.Dennis wrote:Does anyone know if Julie or anyone will be posting results from the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico? The tournament starts on October 25th.

I would appreciate any insight you can provide. Of course I'm focused on the U.S. team, but would like to hear about who the stars are no matter where they are from.locoxelbox wrote:I'm here in Guadalajara Dennis, so I can give info on the bouts. That would be great if it is true and the live coverage actually works. We will have to wait and see.JMac wrote:AIBA is going to give live coverage according to their website.Dennis wrote:Does anyone know if Julie or anyone will be posting results from the tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico? The AIBA did a good with the live service last time out.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I was thinking video coverage when I was talking about live coverage. They are just going to have the scoring shown live. It is better than nothing, but it really doesn't tell you what is happening other than who is winning and by how much.Gary Digital Williams wrote:The AIBA did a good with the live service last time out.

Guess Oscar is staying amateur with Mexico. :)Oscar Molina (Mexico) - Has a lot of experience in senior tournaments having represented his nation in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I noticed that too Mel. How is the U.S. team doing on the first day?
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Several of the USA boxers have won today. Adam Lopez, Kevin Rivers, and Roscoe Hill all won, but Robert Brant lost a tie-breaker.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
my predictions are errol spence & roscoe hill winning both their classes
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Those are good choices as they are both very good boxers. I saw Spence in GR, but it is a tough weight class. Just like it was in GR at the NGG. You had Vasquez, Martinez, Brinson, White, Alicia, Bernal, Crespin, Starks, and others. It was so tough that some of the guys lost their first fight. Spence won his first, but lost in the quarter-finals. I hope he does better in Mexico.CoreyWash wrote:my predictions are errol spence & roscoe hill winning both their classes

48kg - Oscar Cantu has a tough draw to make it to the medal rounds. If he does, he is a superstar in the making.
51kg - Adam Lopez has a much better draw to make it to the medal rounds. I didn't say easy, but more realistic.
54kg - Joshua Berrelleza has a middle of the road/tough draw. He has guys from Venezuala, Romania, China, etc. No Cubans, Russians or STANS, but still tough countries.
57kg - Very tough draw. 1st round wasn't bad, but the next 2 rounds to make it to the semis are very difficult. If Rivers beats the boxer from Belarus, he fights the winner of the Venezuala vs. Russia battle to make it to the medal rounds. Rivers is good, but we will see just how good.
60kg - Bynum gets the Cuban in his first bout. If he gets by him, then he might make it to the medal rounds.

64kg - Hill has a tough draw. He has Kazakhstan, Cuba, Romania, Columbia, Mexico, Australia, and Hungary in his part of the bracket to make it to the medal rounds.
69kg - Spence has a tough draw. He has to beat a guy from Columbia (a member of their Olympic team who just missed out on qualifying for Beijing), Ukraine and Uzbekistan to make it to the medal rounds.
75kg - Arias has a relatively easy draw to make it to the medal rounds. He has the guy AIBA lists as a contender from Turkey, Kaya, but I think Arias will dismantle him and win a medal. In the semis, he probably would have to defeat Savenko from Ukraine. Then he would most likely get the Russian or Cuban in the finals. This is a kid that I think has the goods to win it all.
81kg - Brant lost to the German, but would have had a hard time as he would have had to defeat the boxer from Ecuador and then the winner of the Cuba/Kazakhstan battle to make it to the medal rounds.
91kg - Kisner got a fairly easy draw. He has to defeat the Czech boxer and then the winner of the Kazakhstan/Serbia winner. Then the winner of Croatia/Romania bout (what an easy draw - 1 bout and you're in the medal rounds) to make it to the finals. It is there that the winner of Cuba/Russia/Belarus/Ukraine/Turkey, etc winner (now that was a tough draw). Kisner has a very good chance at a medal.
91+kg - Dawejko should medal. A great draw for Joey. He faces a boxer from ISV in the first round. ISV-???? Then he boxes the winner of Kazakhstan/BIH (????) to get to the medal rounds. Kazak boxers are always tough so Joey will have to impress to make it to the semis. Then Ukraine/Italy winner will probably be the opponent in the semis. The other half the bracket has Germany, Cuba, Russia, Armenia, Croatia, Turkey, Czech, etc. It could not have been made that much better. I expect to see a medal around Joey's neck.
BTW - It would be nice if AIBA would make it easy to understand the abbreviations they make for some of the countries. Do they break it down somewhere on their website?

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
ISV is US Virgin Islands
BIH , I 'm not 100% sure but I think it is Bosnia/Herzegovina

BIH - Bosnia and Herzegovina (I'm sure)
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I checked and you are both right - Bosnia & Hergovia is BIH.

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I don't think those are boxing powerhouses so I think Joey has an easy draw. The US boxers that get easy draws need to take advantage of it and come back with medals. Maybe a couple of the guys with tough draws can medal too. 4 or 5 medals would be great. We will probably be lucky to get 3.JMac wrote:ISV is US Virgin Islands

Oscar Cantu lost to Mexico's Saul Juarez.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Like I said, Cantu had a tough draw and would have to be a superstar in the making to get to the medal rounds. He could still become a top boxer, but he has some work to do.

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
There were some good boxers out there yesterday. The most impressive was cuban 51 kg Yunier Robles. Also ecuadors Jeison Pavon at light heavy looked good beating a hungarian. Mexicos favorite boxer Oscar Valdéz (a 54 kg Olympian) will be hard to beat. Great bodyshots made him a RSC 2 winner.
Also the cuban at 81 kg, Jose Larduet and a couple of 57 kg, the uzbek, and the kazakh who beat 2008 Olympian Luis Porozo from Ecuador. The american 57 kg is talented but I´m not too sure about his defense.

Thanks for the info locoxelbox.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Errol Spence took the first step and defeated the Columbian.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I don't know about online, but I personally have a list. You might check the AIBA web site and see if anything is there. Or do a search on Olympic countries and abbreviations.Checked where? Is there a list of all the countries and the abbreviations?
