Aside from his Da' (when Joey was but a wee lad), Michael Smyth (UK) and Adrian Opreda (Rou) both beat him in the amateurs in 1990.

Yes, Opreda in the 1990 European juniors. Joe won his first bout in the championships by stoppage, then lost on points to the Rumanian. Good one, Eric.
Very good.

What fabulous prize do I win? An all-expenses-paid trip for 2 to Welsh coalmining country, perhaps? ;)

haggis dont grow ripe in fields... they run wild round the highland Bens circling perpetually due to the fact they only have three legs and therefore are extremely easy to catch! taste brilliant too.

as the man once said "fair fa' yir honest sauncie face, great chieften o' the puddin' race, abide them a' ye tak' yer place, painch tripe or thraim"

sentiments im sure we can all agree with

Ahh the coalmines of Wales, that takes me back, whipping those lazy welsh workers into shape with a crack of the old cane whenever ones eyes strayed over to the luscious temptations of the local cattlefields...happy times  Of course that was before i was bed ridden and have to rely on Constance and the servants to care for me, how the mighty have fallen on hard times. Times were simpler back then, one world champion, 55 round fights, a young James Corbett breaking onto the world scene...memories....oh well must dash i'm midway through a game of backgammon with Marmaduke and Beatrice. You know how they try to use underhand tactics when i'm off getting the sherry. Tally-ho!

Aye, fair words from the great Scotch poet Rabbie Burns.

" Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!"

Poet-speak for "to keep your gal happy, slip her a sausage now and again."

Strangely, I had a similar discussion on the Current Scene forum just a couple of weeks ago. Guess I have haggis on the brain. :D

OwainCymru wrote:Eric, what is it with you and haggis ? You just can't stop talking about them. I sent you a link just last week where you could bash your haggis (sausage)......seems you need to mate  :D Can't you type with one hand? :D
Normally I would be able to type with just the left, but I have such severe tendinitis in the right after visiting that sexy haggis site you sent me the link for, that now *all* I can do is use the left, so it's either type or stroke, not both. And left-stroke is no good anyway, because my personal haggis (a.k.a. Little Vike) has some particular fondness for the right - it simply refuses to have anything to do with the right's sinister brother. :(

Maybe if I show it some video of famous left-strokers like Strokin' Joe Frazier and (more recently) Tom Selleck lookalike Corrie Sanders in action, it'll start to come around...

Getting back to Calzaghes last loss, I thought it was to an Italian, or was he just fighting in Italy? either way I remember reading he got robbed of the decision.

OwainCymru wrote:'Little Vike' Aaaaah! poor Eric.
What's in a name, eh? :D

It's all relative - if he were as big as big Vike (that's me), well, I'd need a wheelbarrow (a.k.a. handcart to you Brits.) And that would be awkward.

But perhaps "Vike Junior" would be better for public relations purposes. ;)
