6 December: will it be a fair night for the fans?

Post by scrap iron »

With Amir Khan looking likely he will appear at the Excel Arena and Nicky Cook making the first defence of his WBO title; the Sports Network's show on 6 December now looks like it will be a massive one. But on the same night in Nottingham, Carl Froch will be challenging for the WBC title with a cracking undercard supporting him. So really this has become a massive clash and it seems that the fans are going to suffer. Couldn't the shows be held on seperate dates so the neutral boxing fan could go to both?

I can see why Sky would want to have the Excel show on 6 December if they want to tie-in the De La Hoya v Pacquiao fight as part on their PPV special, but after the £15 that was paid for the 54 second Prescott fight surely they could have made this one free (well not totally free if it's on Sky, but you get what I mean). I can't even see the point of a viewings war between the two TV stations as the Froch show should win hands down if it is on ITV on a Saturday night.

I'm sure there are other reasons why both these shows are happening on the same night, but surely it would have been best to have had it on two different nights. Don't they worry that fans will not bother to buy tickets and instead stay at home so they can watch both shows on the TV?

It's not the first time something like this has happened, and I'm sure neither station will want to dilute their potential audience, so the broadcasts will almost certainly not overlap. Remember Dec 6 last year, when we had separate shows from Vegas, Wigan, Dublin and Switzerland all televised on the same night?
