HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
just interested in article in Alpha magazine this month on our toughest sportspeople over the past 30 years. we have 4 boxers listed in the 101 nominees. #5 - Kostya Tszyu, #29 - Jeff Harding, #63 - Paul Briggs, # 85 - Danny Green. the list was dominated by AFL and NRL players with #1 tough man going to Allan Border.

Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
barry hall has fought better opponents on the AFL field than most of our fighters fight. Thats why so many get flogged when they get a shot
Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
at least the imports are expecting to get hit and are hit from the frontdan h wrote:barry hall has fought better opponents on the AFL field than most of our fighters fight. Thats why so many get flogged when they get a shot

Barry does need to understand the meaning of a king hit......... no question.p4p1 wrote:at least the imports are expecting to get hit and are hit from the frontdan h wrote:barry hall has fought better opponents on the AFL field than most of our fighters fight. However tough is always a hard thing to measure. Hawai ironman means 'tough' to me but there is no contact. Boxing means tough because mental v physical is equally hard, and the sport is brutal. Cricket is a tough sport as well to some degree. Up untill the recent universal use of helmets i reckon many people suffered seriously debilitating injuries playing cricket. Even equestrian sportspeople are amazingly tough (the serious injury rate v participants is huge). It's always hard to be subjective on these things. Toughest sport i've played directly is track cycling (i've broken bones, had three operations and over 100 stitches) but some would think that is a stroll in the park.
Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
don't worry topp, Anna Meares at #7 and Stuart O'Grady at # 22 get a mention with cycling. good cross section as well as the dominant AFL/NRL. triathlon, motorbikes, soccer
(didn't realise vinnie jones was an aussie) PARALYMPIANS, axeman, surfing, jockeys, tennis all get a mention mate.

Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
I don't think it's just the physical toughness they measure. I think it also could be training/mental/etc too. (I haven't read the article tho, I'm making assumptions). To me though there's no harder sport to train or compete in than boxing (or insert another combat sport such as MMA or Muay Thai - but I've not trained/competed in those). Rugby was hard but training was a lot easier in comparison.
I'm sure a 4.5hr tennis match is gruelling. Cricket needs a good level of fitness and a lot of patience
and concentration. Cycling is hard. Some of these sports I can understand.
As long as golfers aren't on the list, I don't really care that much.

Did you know that Golf has the highest incidence of performance enhancing drug use of any sport?

I know. But currently beer, cigarettes and MacDonalds aren't on the prohibited list so they can get away with it.Marlin wrote:Did you know that Golf has the highest incidence of performance enhancing drug use of any sport?
Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
The Alpha 101 toughest is full of popularist mainstream sporting performers, and far too AFL and NRL based. It is basically a page filler and it's only value will be in generating argument/debate in the local pubs.
But I agree with #5 Kostya Tszyu and the other boxers, but some of the other listings, eg. Kobe Abberton; Sam Scott-Young, Geoff Toovey are imposters and to be given a guernsey on the list is a joke.
Also only 5 women are listed, now that's a bit ordinary! Maybe Alpha thinks that there have been not enough courageous women out there playing sport in recent times or that they don't fit the perv factor this mag promotes.

Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
These magazines are full of crap. A professional boxer has his opponent in his face for three minutes at a time. A footballer can take a spell after exerting himself for ten or twenty seconds. There is no comparison.

Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
I could write pages on this, like some have said toughness is measured on a number of things. Physcial and mental being two of the main things.
Ironmen are tough, 3.5k swim (correct me if Im wrong but its a decent distance swim) 160km Cycle then run a marathon to finish thats hard work, you have to be mentally tough, and physically fit. However I think its different from boxing in that yes while your racing other opponents you call the shots, you decide when to ease up you can manage yourself alot better. In boxing while its true you can pick your moments or rounds to take off you dont call the shots in that your opponent may want to up the intensity in the round you wanna take off. I've played rugby, ran 1/2 marathons, done a triathlon, played cricket but nothing is as hard as boxing IMO

Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
perserverence and physical fitness is not toughness, its dedication.
Re: HOW TOUGH ARE OUR BOXERS??
Alan Border at Number 1? WTF??
How tough are our boxers? Well, it's an obvious debate that could go on forever.
I personally would Rate Kostya Tszyu as our toughest ever boxier. That includes his training and mental ability to keep going.
Now don't get me wrong Green fans, Danny is a tough mother, But he's no where near our toughest. Mudine could have never put Tszyu down, even for a couple seconds.
