Who are the most underrated & overrated British boxers?

Post by bennie »

Underrated: Choi Tseveenpurev (Manchester-based Mongolian), Peter Oboh, Damaen Kelly, Craig Docherty, Dean Phillips, Eric Teymour, Michael Jones, Jimmy Vincent.

Overrated: Danny Williams, Jawaid Khaliq, Thomas McDonagh, Anthony Farnell, Howard Eastman, David Barnes.

Good list for the underated although I think the current perspection of Docherty, solid all rounder, is about correct. I'm not sure if it is Jimmy Vincent who is underated or David Barnes/David Walker being overated that makes us think Vincent is underated. I think one or two other Lightweights should be worth a mention in the underated section. Jason Cook won the European title but is never mentioned as world class.

For me one of the most underated fighters is Gary Thornhill, I don't know if he has retired but I'm sure the successes of Nicky Cook (who he nearly beat) and Scott Harrison (who he was holding his own against untill body punches stopped him) will spur him on to go for the lonsdale belt.

Due to inactivity, I have him low in the domestic rankings, and I'm sure many have him lower than Stephen Foster - I think he could very well beat Dazzo Williams (another for the underated category). Its a fight I would like to see.

I would certainly add a few more Light Middles in the overated section, David Walker, Gilbert Eastman, certainly. Can't argue about the rest of your overated list.

I don't know if I'd agree that Damien Kelly is underrated. He got a gift decision against Mahmutov for the Euro title and was blown away against Pacheco. He's got nice movement but doesn't really deserve to be that highly rated IMO.

Tony Docherty is definately one for the overated. He's exciting but there are obvious defensive weaknesses and i dont think it will be long until he loses.

He's WBC number one. His best win is over his trainer. That's what.

I agree. He is being very carefully mis-matched.
