'Tearful' Thompson

Post by deadpan »

Regarding the glove tampering:

As a fighter, would you really not notice that they'd been cut?

Would someone in his team take it upon themselves to do it without his knowledge?

Statistically, what are the chances of both of these statements being true?

The thing is the gloves were checked in the dressing room while he was gloved up and they were ok, they were checked again by the ref in the ring and the attachment was missin. Of c.ourse he knew

It sullies his finest hour for sure (and you have to ask yourself how long this has been going on). The thumb attachments were cut with a blade. The Board clearly believe Thompson knew what was going on by virtue of the ban and also pointed the blame at Maurice Core by turning down his licence application.
Core allegedly did the same with Naseem Hamed's gloves, which were also changed on one occasion.

Interesting. Any chance of a guarded hint on who the third man is?

I think you guys are being unfair to Carl.... give the guy the benifit of the doubt. Also I'm dissapointed in you're question Bennie that 'you have to ask yourself how long this has been going on'.... the referees check the gloves before each bout so it's highly unlikely that Thompson has ever boxed with the thumbs slit. Also you seem to have forgotten that Thompson won this fight with different gloves.... so in no way was there anything underhand in his victory. I've followed Thompson throughout his career and am quite sure that he is not the sort of person to use underhand tactics such as these. After all the excitement that Thompson has brought to boxing over the years and the blood and sweat he has shed I think he deserves better than what he's getting here.

Just trying to apply impartiality to the situation, Silkov.
Richie Davies makes a point of checking the gloves throughly in the ring after he had a chat with retired American referee Chuck Hassett (now a judge) at a show in Japan and asked him what he wished he should have done more of as a ref. Hassett admitted his inspection of fighters' gloves had always been cursory.
This leads me to ask: how many other in-the-ring inspections are cursory? Luis Resto certainly got away with it prior to the Billy Collins sickener. As I asked of Thompson, how many times had Resto done the same thing before? The question rolls off the tongue.
Fortunately, Thompson's gloves were changed in the ring and he pulled off a fantastic win. No disputing that. But the fact he entered the ring with tampered gloves, and the subsequent headlines, sully his finest win in my opinion. Whenever his win is mentioned, so will the gloves.

I understand what you're saying Bennie but I guess I'm just basically saying give Carl the benifit of the doubt that he really didn't know that the gloves were tampered with...... perhaps there was some cock up in the dressing room inspection?. The fact that Thompson has taken the punishment upon himself and not laid the blame on anyone else shows some integrity I believe. Also Thompson has not hid away with his ban and just waited for the smoke to clear like many may have, he's come forward and talked about it and showen how upset he is by the whole incident. I'm sure a guilty man would just take his punishment and keep quiet for a while.
When you are psyched up for a fight would you really take time out to inspect your gloves to see that they are ok.... surely you are almost oblivious to your gloves, just concentrating on the upcoming fight.
I just think that this is such a shame for Carl, he's always been underrated imo and got a rough deal really in many ways, now this great win he's scored has indeed been tarnished... I'd just like to see people give him the benifit of the doubt because I think he's earned it throughout his career.... no way has he achieved what he has by cheating.

This is one of those stories that will run and run I fear.
Thompson, Maurice Core and the ex-pro who Jonny cited were all in the dressing room when the gloves were cut. I don't know who the ex-pro is but I can certainly guess: another former Phil Martin fighter.
Carl, Maurice Core and the ex-pro go back a long way. There's a lot of history. A lot of fights.
