Hagler-Hearns was a fight were two proud champions threw everything at one
another, hagler won, but hearns never lost any respect or fans after that brief
encounter.

Who else could Hagler have faced that would have satisfied his critics ?

Being MW champion is often considered to be the most prestigious award after the HW title. I don't think any MW champ has to move up in weight to prove how good they were.

Hagler beat everyone pre-title and post-title.

He gave guys rematches and would have rematched Hearns and Leonard too.

Shame we never saw him with valdez or Monzon but the time scale didn't quite make it happen.

The MW division was a bit thin in the 1980s but there wasn't a single fighter from around 79-86 who deserved a fight with Hagler and didn't get it.

"was a bit thin......."

And that is the whole point, and the ONLY reason he ever became champ.
