Peter Jackson
6'1 1/2, 190lbs, 1882-1899
This Virgin Islander was a proudly adopted Australian, giving James Corbett
a tough 61 rounder when Corbett was at his best, he fought many solid opponents
but like many coloured fighters he was over looked in his era. Dying at just 40
years of age.
Frank Slavin-
6'1 1/2, 184lb 1882-1902
One of the best HW's from Australia, a busy aggressive fighter that perhaps could
have become the world champion had he been in the right place at the right time.
Collin Wilson
6'5, 240lbish 1992-
One of the best HW's in the modern era, a tough southpaw that leaves it all in the
ring, even in his later years he is a tough customer for many an opponent.
Bill Squires
5'10 1/2, 175ish lbs 1902-1911
More famous for his three fights against champ Burns, Squires was an active and
aggressive fighter that beat many of his local peers to get himself a shot on the
world stage.
Bill Lang
6'1, 195lbs 1905-1916
Giving champion Burns one tough fight when he challenged for the worlds title,
this victorian footballer also went into the ring against other greats of his
era including Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, Sam McVey, Bob Fitzsimmons and
Bill Squires.
Craig Petersen
6'1, 240lbish, 1987-1997
The youngest ever Australian champion at age 20, Petersen was a clever boxer,
he died of a drug overdose at just 26, when greater things perhaps loomed.
Joe Goddard
6', 185lbish, 1889-1901
An active international fighter that managed to beat Joe Choynski twice and
Peter Maher, he was involved in many unrecorded fights as well, staying
active across the globe he was one of Australia's earliest contenders.
Bill Doherty
6', 180lbs, 1890-1904
A tough Victorian that fought actively inside Australia, he passed at 84 years of age.
George Cook
5'9, 185lbs, 1916-1938
This short, stocky and aggressive New South Welshman stayed active inside of
Australia up until he was 40 years of age, never an international threat he was
a tough local contender.
Collin Bell
5'10, 190lbs, 1913-1923
An over looked Australian challenger he faced Sam McVey twice, Sam Langford
once where he went 15 rounds with the tough Canadian, then to be KO'd by
Langford later, he dropped a close decision to Joe Jeanette he would go on to
beat Tom Heeney twice as well as George Cook among other top contenders.
Always a game fighter he gave his best in a classic era of international fights.
No doubt I missed some other greats.

Re: Australian Heavyweights...
Doug Sam? There must have been 2 of them because the only one I know of was a supermiddle from the 1980'2. He lost to one of the Asian supermiddles in a title fight (Chong Pal Park maybe)
Dave Sands and Les Darcy. Do they belong on the list of our notable HW's? They were middles that won the national HW title

Re: Australian Heavyweights...
Other Aussie heavies include Bill Farnan, Mick Dooley and George Cook. A case also can be made for Bob Fitzsimmons being an Aussie.
