Fighters Who Look Like One Another...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

We could draw some interesting comparisons here, over the decades...

The most striking likeness among current fighters, IMO, is Joel Casamayor (Sonny Liston) & Shane Mosley (Ezzard Charles). Bert Cooper, with his haunch, thick upper-body, & black trunks-shoes combo resembled Mike Tyson, yet I see a Larry Holmes-look-alike in his face. How about Michael Carbajal & Manny Pacquiao, to a certain extent?

Others?

Coley Wallace was a ringer for Joe Louis.

Courtland Sheppard looked exactly like Tony Zale.

Schmeling had more than passing resemblance to Jack Dempsey.

Harry Greb is a doppleganger for Herb Goldman!

In a younger Holmes you can see the Tyson resemblance.

Cliff Couser-Mike Tyson is a no brainer.

A young Elijah Tillery resembled a young Muhammad Ali.

Herb Goldman was, I believe, the editor of Boxing Illustrated for awhile in the mid-1990's. He did quite a lot of great work for The Ring in the 1980's, including updating it's Record Book.

That's more to do with his shaven head & beard combination, though, as opposed to his facial structure, which more closely resembles Liston (IMO, anyway).

i remember the USA Network hyping Omar Sheika fight after fight as an Oscar de La Hoya look-a-like.

also, i always thought Ezzard Charles and Evander Holyfield shared the same scowl.

Charles Shufford was a convincing look-alike for George Foreman in the 2002 film, Ali. There's a mild likeness between Israel Vazquez & Ray Mancini. He wasn't a fighter of course, but I can never help drawing comparisons between Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) & Alexis Arguello :DD

Here's another --- Aaron Pryor (Kenny Norton).

Well, that's more to do with the short mo/tall, skinny frame than the face specifically. You don't see Pryor-Norton, though? The hair, the mo, the high cheekbones?

Maybe I will schedule that exam, then...

In October 1925, when Bud Taylor fought "Doc" Snell in Vernon, Calif., the ref made them wear different-colored trunks because they looked so much alike. Along with a facial resemblance, they had the same height and reach, and their hair was the same color and length.
