Witter's opponent
It doesnt seem to have been mentioned here but I read teletext this morning and they say this guy is the opponent.

And remember that if you can't believe what you read on teletext then what can you believe.

I'd like to hear what the big Witter fans have to say on this. We have no idea other than this who he's fighting and it's days away. If it is this guy fair enough, but I thought it would have been someone more high-profile if this is a serious comeback.

Re: Witter's opponent
It is a disapointing comeback fight if true. I think Witter had the option of getting a European title shot and he should have taken that in my opinion. The Current EBU champ is well ranked by the WBC and Witter is ranked #2 (or was anyway) so sense would suggest he could have got straight back into the mandatory spot with one fight.
If the rumours about Olesegun (sp) are true then it is a shame he didn't accept the fight especially with all the trash he's been talking saying Junior has been ducking him.

Re: Witter's opponent
Disapointing, an easy comeback would have been fine if it was straight after the loss but now he needs a fight to make waves. Witter is in a position were he can't bring in big money, so he can't bring in big names anyway. But there must have been a better opponent than this 1. Witter should be looking to get a name to fight who needs an opponent and is offering short money. It probably isn't going to happen for Witter ever now, which as a fan is sad news. If he got a title shot in 18months he'd be 36
Re: Witter's opponent
Being a Witter fan who was definitely going to this had it been against Ajose, it obviously disappointing, but so has the whole of Witter's career. He's hot and cold at the best of times, inactive and incapable, along with his team, of attracting decent fighters to match up against.Captain Hook wrote:I'd like to hear what the big Witter fans have to say on this. His career is only going down from here but he's got his British, Euro and WBC title to look back on as well as good wins against N'Dou, Corley and Harris.

Pretty honest assessment mate, though his potential offered more than a faded Corley, a limited N'Dou and Harris - which was impressive and his career best performance IMO.Lenny wrote:Being a Witter fan who was definitely going to this had it been against Ajose, it obviously disappointing, but so has the whole of Witter's career. And let's not mention the H word in this thread, this is about the realistic future for Junior.

It is accurate.
Even Dominic Ingle said yesterday that no one in the camp had much knowledge of this kid.

Really, then why? Bit bizarre......he could have got something more high-profile and got himself back into the mix if he was serious.twenty six wrote:It is accurate.

WBC have mandated him to fight Olusugen for the chance to fight Bradley, apparenlty. Thats providing he gets this Argie out the way first.

Wales,
The Olusegun fight should have been on this show, but he turned the fight down - wanted mega bucks I'm told.
Nothing to do with the Promotors then ........................ just can't see that fight happening now.
Here in Yorkshire the info is straight into a European after this, in January 09, then a rematch with Bradley.

26,
WBC have aske dfo rthe fihgt to take place, so Ajose will probably get a better split of the purse now. he's #3 with the WBC at the moment (Olusugen). I'll find the quote...

Re: Witter's opponent
Apologies. Its more of a possible and mooted solution...
"Champion Timothy Bradley has a mandatory defense due May 10, 2009. Don King wants his charge Devon Alexander to be the next challenger for Bradley. Gary Shaw and Alex Camponovo want their charge Bradley to have a voluntary defense against the winner of the December clash for the WBO belt between Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt. The WBC does not want that fight to be for the WBO belt, only for the WBC belt and only if the winner agree to fight the mandatory WBC challenger, be it Alexander, the winner of #2 Junior Witter and #3 Ajose Olusegun eliminator or an eliminator between #1 Alexander and #2 Witter."

Re: Witter's opponent
Junior Witter returns on the Williams-Sosnowski card tomorrow night at York Hall against Argentina's Victor Hugo Castro, scheduled for 10 rounds.
The Bradford switch-hitter was closely outscored in his last fight in May in Nottingham by American surprise package Tim "Desert Storm" Bradley, a defeat which cost him the coveted WBC light-welterweight title. Witter is now 34 (pushing 35) but still looked pretty good against the unbeaten Bradley. The quickness of the challenger cost Witter more than any obvious physical deterioration. Bradley dropped the Yorkshireman with a big overhand right in the sixth round and that proved the difference in the end. One judge had Witter winning by three rounds while the others gave it to Bradley by 114-113 and 115-113.
Since then, Witter has sparred Jon Thaxton for the latter's big European title win over Juan Carlos Diaz Melero - and certainly sharpened up the Thetford man. He needs to look sharp himself, given promoter Mick Hennessy's new deal with ITV. His opponent is a bit of a mystery but Witter's style will prove just as mysterious - and more. The 33-year-old Castro, 29-4 (12), has been fighting at six-round level of late and unless he gets in and out before those heavy counterpunches of Witter's find their target (as Bradley got in and out, and thus solved the age-old mystery of Witter's style), there can only be one winner.

i thought the wbo and wbc were less frosty about fighters holding both there titles now.
one of the reasons these titles have lost so much meaning in recent years.
who cares that witter was an ex wbc champion.
who did he beat?

Facts are facts, and fact is Witter and Hatton should have fought a few years ago.
And what do you mean who he beat. Are you some sort of Drone?
Hatton faced 'mandotories' that beat nobody, what about them ?
Face it, Hatton ran from Witter.

What mandatories has Hatton faced??? Hatton skips from belt to belt, unifying the division and taking on the best available...
Witter looks god awful fighting a shot Corley, a crap mexican, a decent win over a faded Harris and then loses his belt to a blown up lightweight...
Give me Hattons career anyday!

It is, but their both the same calibre of fighter, and best of the British.
Seriosly mate, get off the Hatton bandwagon, you're been taken for a chump if you fall for Hattons "People's Champ" nonesense.
i guess Hatton wants to do a Calzaghe special, and maybe face Witter when he is 40+ ?

Witter should have fought Michael Frontin instead. If he did a better job on him than Olusegun, it would have added some spice to their potential fight.

Re: Witter's opponent
Personally I think Witter is better off going for the European title. Has the WBC officially ordered him and Ajose to fight? If not I say get the European title, it gives him guranteed fights if he wins, because of mandatories, Id imagine he would find it easier to bring in voluntary defences to keep himself ticking over too.

The way I read the situation prior to this fight, is that the Olusegun route was dead in the water, and that Euro next then Bradley rematch was the chosen route.
Just can't see a Wazza fighter against a Hennessey fighter, no matter what's at stake.
