Re: Calzaghe - Jones
I'm still going with the unpopular view (wishful thinking perhaps, well definately) - Jones to recapture his old form and KO Calzaghe

It's a Calzaghe UD for me, but I won't be wagering any of my hard earnt on it

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
Joe on points, Jones is a shell of his old self, and if tries to KO Calzaghe he's liable to get flattened himself.
Re: Calzaghe - Jones
Sane response from MW then. Joe by either Mid KO or lopsided decision. I think Jones might have moments early, get tagged and either with get KO'd or do an impression of Peter Buckley (as he did against Tarver the third time).
Re: Calzaghe - Jones
I think RJJ has rebuilt himself into a contender again. He seems to cope with his vulnerabilities a bit better now. Finished strong vs young and hungry Hanshaw.
I think/hope RJJ has some fight in him.
Think Joe will be in better shape for this, than vs Hopkins. He looked fleshy and seemed to think he was going to be a big puncher up at 175 - as if! He'll be more comfortable in the US this time, he'll be alert from fighting a counter puncher last time, and will win on points.

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
No chance of a lopsided decision imo, if Calzaghe wins it will be hard thought.
I think it will be close and Jones will find Calzaghe a lot easier to hit than he did Tarver (also Tarver had already knocked Roy out). Jones isn't the fighter he was but imo neither is Calzaghe
Jones in 7-9

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
Head says Calzaghe 8-4 decision after getting buzzed a few times throughout, Jones does the flashier work but doesn't have the engine to pull out the UD.
Heart says Jones can still do it, turns the clock back and pulls off a miracolous comeback. Jones could really shake Joe up with his speed and power here, hes got something Joe's never seen before, which really could win it for him but not if he does what hes been doing for the last few years by lying on the ropes and doing F ALL

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
What were Joe's performances like against people who move, retreat or counter in the past?
He prefers the guys who come to him; ; Lacy, Mitchell, Brewer, Kessler....
It isn't a perfect style clash for Joe but, Jones is flat and old - a reflex fighter who turns 40 in January.
A reflex fighter cannot beat a pressure fighter when his legs have gone, his speed has gone, his confidence is erroded and his chin is duff. Who was the last fighter of note Jones defeated? And don't say Tito, please, I have work to do.
SRL said RJJ was always said to be unable to catch even bck to Amatuer.
John Ruiz was the last fighter he beat, with Jay Nady in his corner and a heavyweight with slow hands in front of him.

Jones' legs are gone, but he still has some fast hands. Joe can't crack an egg at 175, so hopefully there'll be some competitive action.

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
You could say this about Ali before Foreman too, Jones is still better schooled and the sharper shooter and faster of the 2. He's also adapting to using a high guard and changed his style a bit. His legs have pretty much gone now though.DavidPayne wrote: A reflex fighter cannot beat a pressure fighter when his legs have gone, his speed has gone, his confidence is erroded and his chin is duff. .
Your right Jones hasn't beat anyone of note since Tarver 1, although the Henshaw/Tito fights showed a slight glimour of hope.

Well you could never say Ali's chin was gone, ever.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:You could say this about Ali before Foreman too,DavidPayne wrote: A reflex fighter cannot beat a pressure fighter when his legs have gone, his speed has gone, his confidence is erroded and his chin is duff. .
Did SRL say Jones always had a bad chin? I find that hard to believe, I've never heard of him getting sparked as an amateur, and fighters like Hop or Toney would have found him out at some point, if it were true.

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
Yes, Nady certainly helped a lot, by not allowing Ruiz to engage; I even wrote in a preview of that fight that the choice of referee would have a huge impact. Had Ruiz been able to close and maul in close, we may have seen a different result.DavidPayne wrote:What were Joe's performances like against people who move, retreat or counter in the past?

I can well believe Roy never had a good chin, his reflexes were just so good he hardly ever got hit with a solid shot for the best part of 10 years.
Re: Calzaghe - Jones
I rekon Roy will spent alot of time sitting on the ropes hoping to land something big and he's still got the hand speed and power to KO Joe. That said, I still think Joe will win this one... unless Roy lands a few big shots early on he is really going to struggle with the pace and if he's sitting on the ropes and not throwing, like he did in patches against Tito, he's gonna find himself in alot of trouble.
Calzaghe to win on points but I doubt it'll be pretty.

My first post but a long time reader.
Think Calzaghe by close decision. Really enjoyed the 3 HBO 24/7 episodes.

I think PN has summed it up nicely & i expect his 'HEAD' preview to be correct.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Head says Calzaghe 8-4 decision after getting buzzed a few times throughout, Jones does the flashier work but doesn't have the engine to pull out the UD.

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
I appreciate Khaosai's pick -- & to be fair I think he's said Jones is gonna KO him ever since the fight was announced -- but I watched the Hanshaw fight last night & Roy looked, well, shite. He can still crack hard enough to deck Joe, deffo, but I don't think he's got it in the tank to finish him. Calzaghe's still got a great motor & I can see him working RJJr over along the ropes on the way to a UD.

Its a fascinating fight, in my drunken opinion, and anyone who feels the need to drone on endlessly about this fight being a "joke" needs to think long and hard about why they "follow" boxing
anyway, i can see Calzaghe getting a bit careless with Jones backed up against the ropes and Roy unleashing his famous "energy 'ammer" (yes, i know) right on Joe's chin
So say i, and all that sail in me

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
KG's knockout prediction worries me after his correct call of Pavlik-Hopkins, and this is the second fight in a row in which a higher volume puncher has been expected by the masses to overwhelm a 'past it' great.
However, for this fight, I stand by my original thought that Calzaghe should dominate and win. Can't be arsed to write anything cogent, so I'm going to bullet point my argument.
AGAINST CALZAGHE:
- Downward trend;
- Poor performances against counterpunchers;
- Away day blues;
- Right cross and left hooks are favoured by Jones and Calzaghe is vulnerable there;
- Tendency to get caught.
However, I think problems are surmountable.
FOR CALZAGHE:
- Underrated ability to adapt;
- Underrated ability to simply 'get the job done'; born winner;
- Underrated boxing skills;
- Jones hasn't beaten a challenging opponent for many years;
- Trinidad fight flattered to deceive: opponent way past his best, over his best weight and inactive;
- Chin vulnerable, even to Calzaghe;
- Tendancy to lay on the ropes with a high guard may leave him vulnerable to Calzaghe flourishes;
- Workrate has dropped markedly post-Ruiz;
- Doesn't perform as well against southpaws (nobody has mentioned this);
- Accuracy has dropped markedly post-Ruiz, even in the so-called "back to something like his best" fights against Henshaw/Trinidad -- check compubox if you don't agree;
- May be more experienced and fought the better opponents, but in recent years Calzaghe has hung in far higher quality.
OK, done, bye, Calzaghe KO 9

Re: Calzaghe - Jones
You know, that's the kind of sh1t I never think of, and it makes perfect sense to me. I really could see that happening -- Jones holding his own for 3 rounds, Calzaghe slowly getting to grips with him and cranking up the pressure, Jones looking increasingly folorn and lost, Calzaghe going in for the kill and BAM!Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:Its a fascinating fight, in my drunken opinion, and anyone who feels the need to drone on endlessly about this fight being a "joke" needs to think long and hard about why they "follow" boxing

God, that would be gruesomely compulisve watching -- beaten by a ducker punch in your last fight and losing the 'oh'.
I really, really see that happening.
