Excellent Jones interview by Don Rafael for USA today.

Jones will be back, but wants to stay at Light Heavy!

Good comeback opponent mutted, but I think its a mistake.

Very true J, But Roy has a point. Tyson got the lion share of the £££ vs Holyfield, Lewis got the lion share vs Rahman. Roy is undoubtedly still the name, and while it is not right - it happens.

agreed I just hate all this lucky punch bullshit.
I never liked it when lewis said the same bout Rahman / McCall and he is my fave!
Wish these guys could give some credit to the opposition, go on give it a try, a fighter always earns my support and liking if he is modest and honest rather than excuses or belittling.
Alex arthur being a case in point used to think he was great, it wasnt the loss but his demeanour in the subsequent interviews that turned me off to him and now I can barely bring myself to type his name without spitting feathers....(excuse the pun)

I don't think Roy was discrediting Tarver, he stated that he always had a suspicion he will get nailed and is gutted that it is the "loudmouth" Taver that has done it. However, he (like Tyson and Lewis before) is still the star attraction of the two, he is the one the fans will flock to see. He is the one who believes that because of this, he deserves the more money. Its not fair, but it has happend in the past.

I don't think its because he thinks Tarver was lucky, like he said "I can live with being not the best in the devision" - he accepted it far better than Lewis and Arthur. Lewis was still calling himself champ after getting KO'd by Rahman.

Impressed by the choice of comeback opponent and its the correct step to take for Jones IMO, An easy opponent will do him no good he needs to beat a decent fighter to maintain his confidence.

He is correct he doesnt need Tarver and will always be considered by far Tarvers superior by all knowledgable fight fans.

Let's face it, getting knocked the fornicate out is humiliating, and that's why most fighters react so gracelessly when it happens.

Much as a fan as I was of Lewis, I always found his lack of credit to his opponents very annoying. Especially after Vitali gave him hell and Lewis refused point blank to even admit he was having anything like a hard time.

Riddick Bowe's was the best, after getting knocked into La-La land in his third fight with Holy, he tried to make out that he was in full control of the situation, when in fact one more punch would have knocked him spark out. It was one of the most transparent pieces of

I do wonder whether Jones can comfortably make weight any more, although his body looked in good nick, his face did look very drawn and wrinkly again, I wonder whether he has ever juiced in his career, because he looks suddenly very very old in the face, and he's only 35. He doesn't look a well man to me.

I understand but I still personally find it unpalatable (who cares I know), and it happens so often thats why I really give credit to those guys who can say ..well done...to their victor. When it does happen its something special I reckon. For example everyone thinks Richard williams is a total star....never hear hiom bad mouth anyone.....
Real sportsmanship and the the reasons you highlight make it very special and hard to do. Takes a certain type of person I reckon to be able to that.

Still reckon arthur was well ott, tho. Very strange behaviour and he does like a whinge from what I've read..

It's possible, but IMO he was just never the same after the weight yo-yo he did for Ruiz. Remember, he was a bulked-up middleweight even the whole time he was fighting at 175. Putting on an additional 25 lbs. of muscle and then taking it off again has got to play hell with your body, especially at age 35 and with so many amateur and pro rounds under one's belt.

That having been said, except for the slightly haggard face, he looked in great shape Saturday night. No one can avoid the ravages of father time, but he certainly looked nothing like the drained fighter we saw in the first Tarver bout. He got caught with a huge left from a guy who isn't as skilled as he is, but is a huge light-heavy with a big punch. If you read my KO-analysis thread, that punch was very unorthodox as Tarver was coming up after doubling over to just get out of the way from a big straight counter right from Jones. I don't think Roy ever saw it coming - his right hand was up to guard as he threw a left hook of his own that glanced off Tarver's right shoulder, and that may have blocked any chance he had to get even a split-second glimpse of Tarver's rising left hook, which landed right on the button, just ahead of the guarding hand. Throwing punches from bizarre angles is something Roy knows a lot about - this time he just happened to be on the wrong end of one.

Oh, and I do think Tarver deserves a 50/50 split for any rubber match. Roy doesn't need to pull a De La Hoya in that regard.

Tarver does not deserve a 50-50 split. He's going to earn a lot of money fighting Jones, more than he'll make fighting anyone else. Jones is the man. He deserves the bigger end of the stick.

Seriously, remember him trying to get up at 5 or 6 and then tipping over on his face, before getting up and stumbling all the way across the ring into the ropes, only to be held upright by Jay Nady?

He should be smoking mad that he got fluked, if that's what it was.
And to top that off, he isn't willing to concede a 50-50 purse, in order to prove that he's the better man?

I can understand when some guy who is next to nobody fights a bigger star the bigger star gets a lot more money. I was once told that Hasim Rahman got 1 million for his first fight with Lewis.

And though it is true that Tarver would get more money fighting Jones then anyone else, I think he is perfectly entitled to 50% of the purse bid. After watching the first fight I think Tarver won it, and was skanked by the judges. So to set the record straight Jones agrees to a re-match, and gets knocked on his arse. I quite agree with..........

In fact, if Roy was as great as he'd have us believe, he would be willing to fight Tarver for next to nothing, since he has all the money in the world already.
At this point, a GREAT fighter would be more concerned with his standing in the boxing history books, than he would be about conceding a few dollars to a guy who MURDERED him in the ring a few days ago.

And though I understand that Jones wouldn't necessarily want to go 50/50 with every lesser star he faced so might not want to set a precedent here, it would be pretty funny if Tarver went "You don't want to go 50/50 f*** off then!" and refused to fight him. That would give a situation whereby the sport would have the boxer who is supposed to be pound for pound the best ever losing the first fight in many peoples eyes, losing the second one officially and then refusing a third just coz he didn't like what he was getting paid because he'd get 7 million instead of 15 million for the fight. I'm not doubting Jones quality, but if that happened I suspect it may cost him some credibility.
