Adam Willett

Post by Dennis »

What ever happened to Adam Willett? He had some shoulder/arm injuries, boxed in the 2007 Olympic Trials (losing to Quantis Graves twice), and then I haven't heard anything about him since August 2007.

I started in the same gym as Adam before I joined the Marine Corps. but I recently asked a friend who still trains up there with Veterans Memorial Gym in NY and they told me Adam is trying to sign with somebody before he starts fighting PRO but hes still out there training, I gotta give his trainer a call or I'll just see him when I take some time off to go to NY for the holidays.

Yeah I heard he was training with the Olympic team until they left for China and that he will turn pro pretty soon.

Was Adam one of the guys that traveled to China with the team to be a sparring partner?

Beijing training partners were: David Clark, Daniel O'Conner, Greg Carter, Shawn Porter, Chris
Downs, and David Carey.

So Adam was just one of the boxers who helped prior to the boxers heading to Beijing.

I wonder why they are having such a long delay before he has his pro debut. Was there another injury or did he finally have the shoulder surgery?

no injuries Adam was waiting to sign with someone and it took longer then expected, he was supposed to sign with Bernard Hopkins but didnt make it to see him when Bernard fought Kelly so Adam signed with someone else right afterwards

It still seems like a long time to wait. Sign with someone in late summer or early fall and don't have the pro debut until the end of January 2009. I understand some guys need some polishing before turning pro, but Adam should have already been ready. He is not a kid nor did he have limited amateur experience. He is a guy who had international experience and had boxed in many national tournaments. He had to have well over 50 bouts of amateur experience. For him, they should be getting him in the ring soon and have him box often.

your right but most of it has to deal with his trainer who also held Leon Green from taking alot of fights when Leon was under Sugar Shane. Shane eventually dropped Leon because he couldnt really agree with their trainer

How can a trainer want to hold a boxer back like that. I like having pro boxers fight on a regular basis, especially during the first 12-24 months. Recent examples are Fernando Guerrero and Danny Jacobs. They have both been kept busy and it was good for them. Their rate of competing will slow down now that they are moving up in the rankings.

I agree, his trainer lost out on ALOT of money as well for those decisions he made especially in Leons case

Maybe he will move Adam along a little faster after seeing what happened with Leon.

Leon Green is a waste of talent........

He's also legally blind in one eye, so his career is just about over.......

As far as I know, Coach Murphy is only training Adam, and won't have any say so in career moves.

Whoever is training him needs to get him in the ring for his debut and then keep him busy.

Well, if he's sticking with Murphy for training and management, I don't see that working out to well for him. Best of luck to him, either way.

No need to wait brother, mark it down. Green was with Golden Boy, yet they both found a way to ruin it. Coach Murphy should just stick with training and leave his hands off from everything else. I do wish Adam luck, but I'm not so sure of the team around him, or lack there of.....
