Roy put up a good effort, considering his prime is a long time gone. That uppercut might have won him a lot of other fights. And that cut was enough to retire early if he'd wanted to.

Agree with everyone else, Calzaghe's taunting of a beaten fighter looked really bad, but that's how a lot of great fighters are. Joe wouldn't see a problem with it at all, his desire to win borders on psychopathic, and he feels nothing for his opponent in there. Winning is everything.
That's why he always comes first and the other guy always comes 2nd.

He proved nothing mate.

All he did was prove that a half-decent fighter can beat Jones. A good fighter can beat him and humiliate him.

Good post and spot on regarding his desire to win. In essence, that is why he comes back strong after fighters have any partial success - he comes back with speed and ferocity. He beat Jones psycologically as well as physically.

He proved be is a fantastic boxer, something we already know. But he has never gone Prime v Prime against a Legend.

This fight was a joke. RJJ was not even in any P4P Rankings what so ever. The fact the British Media are making so much out of it shows how lame and desperate the British are when it comes to Boxing.

Face it, Calzaghe had the talent to become a Legend, but his entire career has question marks after question marks.

He feared a loss so much he just wasted his talent. Anyone with even a hint of class would have said, no, RJJ is passed it, there is no point. Calzaghe just beat and humiliated someone who is way way beyond the point of "Passed it".

True British Fashion ain't it?

Jones was still a top 10 light heavy, so there's nothing too bad about him challenging a light heavy champ, is there? Boxing has always pitted men in their primes vs men on the way down - it's not just about "prime for prime". It's as much about Joe being a big name and being Joe, if you know what I mean.

Bunce, Joe etc have blown things way out of proportion. Joe acting like he did something massive. The way Bunce went on about "Redaimption", "Redaimption" (for Jones) made him sound lie a demented televangelist. But if these fihgts are bringing big money, what can you do?

Odd fight for me really - I thought the cut bothered Joe, for me he seemed to go down a gear after it happened.

I don't the showboating was particularly distasteful, he just felt we shoing his 'stuff' the same way Jones was earlier on and in some ways I think he was doing it to give the crowd something as opposed to opening up on Jones to try and put him away.

Just didn't look like Calzaghe really wanted to stop him to me.

I hope Calzaghe boxes on for another couple of fights - I note HBO want Chad Dawson - if Calzaghe was willing that is the opponent I think HBO would chuck millions and millions towards - its the fight they want and they normally get their way.
An excellent fight? It was a completely one sided beat down. Joe would not have been able to act the fool like that throughout if Jones had been anywhere near his best. It was a joke of a fight. Jones should retire. Calzaghe should consider Dawson or the winner of the Froch fight.

Joe is just too much at this point. I was so-so with the showboating in the early part of the 'fight' (when it was a fight) because Jones Jr. could be said to be getting some of his own back, but when Roy, predictably, went into journeyman mode it was just grating. Brought Joe's mentality right to the fore - quite content to be a genuine bully. I've floated the word about him in the past with the mismatches he has chosen and/or been content with but last night showed what he was all about.

Why people ever bothered with names like Pavlik and Dawson is beyond me - shows complete lack of understanding about how Joe treats boxing. Don't think for a moment his senior tour is some sort of redemptive undue justice he has finally won after sticking with it - he has played the Collins card and jumped on and off the wagon at the right time - off with the loot. And don't think for a moment he has any intention of taking part in a Hopkins rematch (the only fight you will ever see where the highlight reel shows the winner taking all the clean shots), the fact he keeps trying to talk down the fight, and Hopkins, tells you it still plays with him - and no doubt will for many years - again, a trait, a vulnerability (i.e. since Hopkins refused to be silenced), of the bully mindset.

He is/was the polar opposite in terms of style but I think outside the UK (and parts of the US), and respectively Germany, he will be seen (with some legitimacy, IMO) as two peas in a pod with Sven Ottke - Joe can say he was the slightly bigger pea.

The difference with the likes of Glen Kelly, J.C. Gonzalez, Richard Hall, etc. is that they were fit, hungry and only unable to open up because Roy - the Roy with legs - refused to give them a target. If you want to see how Roy acted in a similar position to Joe last night, get a tape of his fight with Mike McCallum.

Lol what a load of rubbish! He beat Hopkins easily and dont blame for not offering the old cheat another chance at trying to hold his way to a sixth career loss! Hopkins my arse.

As for Sven Ottke, very funny.

You must be the king of Berkshire then KG as you are advocating that we are all mad for wanting two light-heavies who have cleared out the division's deadwood to actually, the nerve of it all, fight one another. When Ray Leonard fought Thomas Hearns to clear up their division were you sat in a pub giving out a monolgoue about how it was a fight for the ne'er-do-wells who sit in pubs moaning about potential boxing matches (whilst all the while having to have had a irony by-pass). Calzaghe-Dawson is a natural fight. Just as Hearns-Leonard and countless other fights were. And they turned out to be decent enough contests in the end.

What we are more likely to get, if Joe fights again, is Joe versus some old man people have heard of, Johnson perhaps, or some young guy no one has heard of, with the same being true for Dawson.

Are bills featuring old men, some bills I have been guilty of supporting myself, really the be all and end all? Are we mad for not wanting to see a pension fight topping an absolutely shite 'undercard'? Staying up beyond 4am for a fight that is destined to be quite dull, not massively competitive and is nailed-on for points is not fun is it? Especially when you get to see a procession of shit fights before the main event.

I understand the concept of these fights, so ditch the standard 'You are an idiot, you do not understand the business' reply, I really do understand what these fights are about, it does not prevent them from being tepid affairs. The pre-fight studio stuff, anchored brilliantly by Paul Dempsey, was better than the fight.

In short I get it, but I am going to let out a moan as the one natural fight in the division, Joe-Dawson, will probably not happen, Joe-Jones/Hopkins/Bika II is more likely.
Sorry, i fell asleep approximately 4 lines into your post, what are you going on about now?.

Calzaghe - Bika II more likely than Dawson?

The 'postpone style' is really effective. ;)

If Francis can get past Erdei, he could give Dawson a few tough rounds. Meanwhile, we can turn our attention to Froch and Kessler at SM.
jeej wrote:I'm just imagining how brilliant a Joe Calzaghe with a less slappy style and harder hitting shots could be.
Dig out his fights from ten years ago. I think he can still punch quite hard if he's pushed, but the lighter shots can be thrown with much less physical commitment, which is preferable for an ageing fighter.

It's a deliberate tactic to avoid being punished for slowing reflexes. Also, it enables him to remain busy until the end. Lots of one-two-threes to keep the opponent - and therefore danger - away.

Agreed. Why was Calzaghe doing that to a legend like Jones who would have hammered him in his prime? Fight left a bad taste, should have been stopped with the cut, hope the beating Roy Jones took hasnt caused any permanent damage

If Joe moaned for years that he wasn't in the mix, and if he won't answer the call now that the top fighters want him, then it is pretty shite.

So Buncey, Joe is such a superstar that only Hopkins and Jones rematches can be contemplated?

Was a bit sad to see this calibre of response on the British forum but after quickly scanning your post history it made sense. You seem to offer all these responses that are not quite flames - but not far off. Got a very uncomfortable vibe reading down your post list too - almost parasitic, almost creepy level of 'defence' (if you can call your mostly vacuous posts that) regarding Britain's most high profile fighters. Put you on ignore as you really don't seem to offer anything constructive to many debates at all.

i couldve said the exact same thing when jones jr fought trinidad?

and tell me jones jr wouldnt have been doing the same to calzaghe if it were the other way around. calzaghe went down a gear after the cut, he couldve stopped him but he knew rjj was done

What about me and Khan ?

When have i ever called him a Legend. I have never even said he could become a legend. I just said it's early days and the shocking harsh comments on him are unwarranted. He has the tools to win a few belts.

as for the bit in bold. Wtf is that supposed to mean?

What you mean i don't like Calzaghe. i think it's pretty obvious it's a dam shame that such a talented boxer has thrown away his career defending a shabby WBO belt his entire career. If that's hate, then call it hate.

This fight summed up everything for me about boxing that sucks.

An over the hill, clearly faded former legend, who at nearly 40 is completely delusional and thinks he can turn the clock back, against another future hall of famer who is still near his prime.

Jones is shot to pieces, he can't operate without the legs he used throughout his career to take him out of danger. At 39 he is way way past his best, it's not just the age, but the fact that his fighting style required him to operate on a rarified physical level that he no longer can attain.

Hopkins, although several years older, never had those astonishing physical gifts, and therefore didn't miss what he never really had.

There was nothing edifying about the spectacle whatsoever, this was just a massive ego jerkoff for Calzaghe, beating a 'future hall of famer' who by his own admission in an interview some years ago, would have kicked his butt. It was also another fat pay cheque of course, but I don't see why the paying public should be bullshitted to massage Joe's ego and enrich his pocket.

I don't see Mark Lawrenson pretending that a 5-0 drubbing of some minor European Team by Man united in the champions league, is a career defining moment for alex ferguson, but yet we have to listen to Dempsey, Buncey, Barry, uncle Tom Cobbley and all spewing utter bollocks about how this fight proves this that and the other, when all of them know that Roy Jones is a shell of the fighter he was 5 years ago.

All this fight proved was that boxing can be a load of right old shit sometimes.

Calzaghe is one of our finest fighter, but he's had too many gimmes; and if this is the quality of opponent we are going to see, then the sooner he ffffs off and retires, the better.
