Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight

Post by Gazmac81 »

What about the big fight , i had money on a knockdown and win for joe yet again
but anyway those first few rounds were some of the best around with both going hell for leather
it was great fight uptill calzaghe took over after the cut but im sure most would agree a great fight

Obviously the first couple of rounds were a total nightmare for Joe. I think RJJ was counting on Joe getting tired from throwing all those shots... but he just didn't, and the older RJJ got tired.

That cut definitely made the fight look a lot better for Joe. Made it stand apart from the B-Hop fight. All with deserved merit too, was some good shots from Joe to cause the cut and worsen it.

The showboating from Joe was so unnecessary. It didn't seem to be affecting RJJ at all and just proved to make Joe look like a bit of a dick. He would have gained more respect from the Americans if he just did his job. His pride gets in his way and he gets cocky. If he had been walking round with his hands low and dancing about against RJJ 10 years ago... he'd have been eating canvass pretty quick.

Good win for Joe, but doesn't matter which way you paint it, he missed the boat for taking on the best in his and their respective primes and these last two wins will always be looked upon with an air of "yeah, he beat them when they were relatively washed up and finished".

Showboating (spoiler alert!)

Post by deadpan »

Found Joe's antics infuriating and rather tasteless. I don't think you should be doing that to a genuine legend of the ring, especially when he's a clearly faded force gamely battling on with virtually one eye. I also think it actually signified an acknowledgement of fallibility on Joe's part. He knows he can't knock them out anymore so relies on tacky tomfoolery to emphasize his dominance. It led me to actually wanting RJJ to land a haymaker.

If Holmes had pulled stunts like that against Ali it would've haunted his legacy a million times more than the Marciano/jockstrap quip.

True.

Joe did really well, but all effort too late.

It was a more entertaining fight than I thought it would be, although not a classic by any means.

Just a shame Roy couldn't pull it off :witzend:

It was entertaining til Joe figure him out. What was that, 3 or 4 rounds? Moslty self indulgent, and I felt a bit embarrassed about how he conducted himself, he got dropped and couldn't put the guy away.

Nothing looks more stupid than a man who sticks his chin out then gets hit. I think he does this because he knows he's going to get nailed as he comes in.

The talent is so obviously there, and it was there on the night at 175. If only that talent had been applied vs an opponent who could do more at this stage. That's what I kept thinking.

Joe commanded the big stage, he beat a top 10 light heavy, so it counts as an ok title defence. But he's really having his cake and eating it. Do the US really want him back? He's never had good ratings over there. Hopefully this is one of the last examples of fighters being able to cash in, in less than enthralling fasion.

He should have been more like this against Hopkins. That would have bene more impressive.

It was a more compelling fight than I thought it would be, but knockdown aside, it went pretty much as I thought it would.

RJJ is still trying to get away with throwing flashy & quick single counters, but unfortunately for him, his athleticism, reflexes & stamina have all diminshed so he can no longer get away with just doing that.

Calzaghe's time has come to retire although now he knows he can solve the Jones puzzle I would not rule out a megabucks rematch at the Millenium Stadium. They have laughed off Dawson which I think is a smart move as Dawson's lightning speed and mobility wouldn't make for an easy night at all and Pavlik has now lost most credibility. Maybe a homecoming last fight against Clinton Woods?

Jones Jnr was a shell of his past self and it was a shame watching the man who once paraded the ring, pot shotting opponents at will and toying with them now desparate to salvage some pride by surviving and going the distance. The Jones of today clings to moral victories rather than meaningful ones.

Calzaghe is the worst and most unconvincing showboater in the sport. Jiggling his chin out and waving his arms low makes for embarrassing viewing and this is only a new thing he has adopted since fighting in the States.

Overall, legacy cemented, record safe - retirement imminent...unless...the big, big money boys come knocking.

The fight was a very good one to watch and yet again I was impressed with Calzaghe despite having a suspicion that RJJ may have given him problems - other than the first couple of rounds Calzaghe was in complete charge and that was impressive.

Whilst RJJ has clearly faded I think fans not only dis-credit him but also Calzaghe's performance when they criticise RJJ so ruthlessly - RJJ is a clear legend of the ring - and despite my thoughts for the first three quarters of Calzaghe's career where he could have fought far tougher opposition - in the performances against Kessler, Hopkins and now RJJ - Joe Calzaghe has proved his worth as one of the very best pound for pound fighters in the world of boxing - and in addition he has also proved his worth as one of the very best fighters this country has ever produced - I have been one of those boxing fans which has vented a lot of criticism calzaghe's way - but a time comes when you have to be humble enough to state "I have got him wrong".

Excellent performance from Calzaghe.

He still looks like he's in his prime. He was often unconvincing in his late '20s. The man's fighting very well, but again I'm frustrated so see his talents wasted somewhat against an overwhelmed opponent. Jones looked like a man in his late 30s and Joe looked like a man in his early '30s.

RJJ deserved his top 10 ranking, proved he was dangerous (early at least) but it's a case of Joe taking a fight only when he knows he's going to win. Smart, yes. Prove anything? Not much.

I think he showed what a superb light heavy champ he could be, as he looked big & fast in there.

He is a complete & utter plonker though.

I really wish he'd been in this kind of shape for Hopkins.

Will the offers pour in and will Joe take the bait? Hopkins rematch promises to be ugly but for the money and t get Hopkins on Joe's home turf, would that be worth it? I felt Joe beat Hopkins, but I still see it as a blemish, sort of.

Maybe he could move to cruiserweight and take a shot at being a 3 weight champion. Take on the winner of Adamek/Cunningham.

As I have said in previous threads, Joe would win, but possibly on a late stoppage or by points. I also said that there would be knock downs with both hitting the deck, i got (50% of this right)

Anyway I have never been so confident on an outcome of a fight since Lennox Lewis fough Derek Williams.

joe calzaghe fought an over the hill boxer would could not go along with the pace of the fight, he had his chance and muffed it!.

Its not a suprise at all and in all honesty I think Calzaghe should retire and not go on fighting over the hill fighters, because if he does fight again it will not be with a hungry primed fighter.

The only thing what makes me angry about Calzaghes record is that it has very good names on the win list, but these names are has-beens.

Great win for him but predictable!

I disagree, there were many times were he stuck his chin out and then made Jones miss over and over again. And yes there were other times he got hit, but the point is it made Jones open up temporarily, for Joe to get stuck in. Only reason Jones survived, if you can call it that(!), is because firstly, the ref was crazy enough to allow it to continue, secondly, because he ended up having to glue his hands to his face (probably the conjealed blood), and thirdly, because Calzaghe took the foot off the gas and IMO carried him towards the end. No reason why Calzaghe could not have gone hell for leather and got him out of there, but he seemed happy in the last few rounds to carry him. Arguably though, he did effectively put Jones away - his face was a complete mess and they should not have allowed him to continue.

I dissagree, the performance was only good because RJJ is so shot, yes Calzaghe is a good fighter in his own right but you cant really mention him in the same breath as RJJ.
Exactly.

Alot of boxers are made to look good due to their opponent letting them.

Teddy,

Whilst I see what you are saying here - yes RJJ was clearly on the decline - but there again there would be some who would state Calzaghe was not at his best and hasn't been for sometime. The fight regardless of what our opinions are was a big occasion - it was a fight America wanted to see and it is a fight HBO paid millions for.

Another thing I cannot agree on is this word "shot" in RJJs case - in my opinion at no stage did he look as if he was going to hit the canvas from anything Calzaghe - I honestly believe there are many other fighters who fall over as soon as you blow at them - Khan for example.

I do concede if Calzaghe fought RJJ when he wasn't f*cking around with his weight - ie going up to Heavyweight and then coming back down then the fight would have been different even if Calzaghe was in his prime.

The fight was definitely a good watchable fight for me - better than some sh*t that is being served up on TV.

I was going to watch the replay but I needed the toilet at about 4.10 am so we both got up to see it live. Great fight, really enjoyed it. Joe Calzaghe the true "Prince of Wales" never mind that big eared git. RJJ is still dangerous, despite not being the fighter he was, so it was a great win for Joe. I dont want to see him fight Hopkins or RJJ again, I would rather see him retire. I would however love to see him fight Froch, if Froch can beat Pascal in a convincing manner, but definately not Dawson who would probably end his unbeaten reign.
