Cant argue with that Spud.Spud wrote:Teddy,teddy007 wrote:I dissagree, the performance was only good because RJJ is so shot, yes Calzaghe is a good fighter in his own right but you cant really mention him in the same breath as RJJ.Spud wrote:The fight was a very good one to watch and yet again I was impressed with Calzaghe despite having a suspicion that RJJ may have given him problems - other than the first couple of rounds Calzaghe was in complete charge and that was impressive.
Whilst RJJ has clearly faded I think fans not only dis-credit him but also Calzaghe's performance when they criticise RJJ so ruthlessly - RJJ is a clear legend of the ring - and despite my thoughts for the first three quarters of Calzaghe's career where he could have fought far tougher opposition - in the performances against Kessler, Hopkins and now RJJ - Joe Calzaghe has proved his worth as one of the very best pound for pound fighters in the world of boxing - and in addition he has also proved his worth as one of the very best fighters this country has ever produced - I have been one of those boxing fans which has vented a lot of criticism calzaghe's way - but a time comes when you have to be humble enough to state "I have got him wrong".
Excellent performance from Calzaghe.
Whilst I see what you are saying here - yes RJJ was clearly on the decline - but there again there would be some who would state Calzaghe was not at his best and hasn't been for sometime. The fight regardless of what our opinions are was a big occasion - it was a fight America wanted to see and it is a fight HBO paid millions for.
Another thing I cannot agree on is this word "shot" in RJJs case - in my opinion at no stage did he look as if he was going to hit the canvas from anything Calzaghe - I honestly believe there are many other fighters who fall over as soon as you blow at them - Khan for example.
I do concede if Calzaghe fought RJJ when he wasn't f*cking around with his weight - ie going up to Heavyweight and then coming back down then the fight would have been different even if Calzaghe was in his prime.
The fight was definitely a good watchable fight for me - better than some sh*t that is being served up on TV.

Just watched It In full on Setanta 2, was worried when getting up In the morning and watching the news report saying he got knocked down again but It was an accidental forearm that did It and the ref couldn't tell from where he was.
Shame Roy's past his prime but he's not shot enough to lose to some of the fringe belt holders at LHW still. The Tarver fight affected his confidence making him look worse. Roy put up a better fight than that bitch Hopkins.
Suprised they didn't take the cut that serious.

Better than a 35 year old Reid. Roy would still school Froch with his bursts.Well done Joe, you beat up a 40 year old relic![]()
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
That definately applies to RJJ but not Hopkins mate it doesn't matter about Hopkins age cos B-Hop is in the best form of his life Joe has beaten him in the middle of defeats over Winky Wright, Tarver and Pavlik so the wins not to be sniffed at.jeej wrote:.
Good win for Joe, but doesn't matter which way you paint it, he missed the boat for taking on the best in his and their respective primes and these last two wins will always be looked upon with an air of "yeah, he beat them when they were relatively washed up and finished".

This is the man who fought for the light heavy world titles 3 times in 2004-2005 ? and was KO'd twice and vastly outpointed during those 3 times ? he ain't schooling nobody mate. He wouldn't even school a washed up Robin Reid.
Reid was Carl's mandatory and afterwards Carl said Reid was no longer in his peak. He took no glory in that victory.
Plus Max he didn't get floored did he? Froch smashed him inside 5 rounds like he was supposed to have done.
"I'd prove nothing by being the 3rd man to KO Jones. Instead I'll wiggle my backside at him"

Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
Be fair, that Hopkins fight was hardly a convincing win, was it? He got put on his arse and then between them they made the ugliest boring fight you're likely to see for a while. Joe made hard work of that fight. Not that Hopkins did much to help on that front.Floydp55 wrote:That definately applies to RJJ but not Hopkins mate it doesn't matter about Hopkins age cos B-Hop is in the best form of his life Joe has beaten him in the middle of defeats over Winky Wright, Tarver and Pavlik so the wins not to be sniffed at.jeej wrote:.

It's about what happens on the night too, and I'm not about to start kissing Joe's feet for that Hopkins win. Pavlik was fighting for the first time outside his comfort (weight) zone and really didn't look like himself. Sure styles indeed make fights, and credit to Hopkins for still fighting at this level at his age, but I still maintain it's not like Joe obtained the Holy Grail by beating him like he did and when he did.
Give me a call when Joe finds the keys to his tardis and goes back to face these guys 10 years ago.

observer1, do you really, honestly want to sit through Calzaghe and Hopkins flannel around for another 12 rounds, occasionally pawing at each other before getting in a tangle of arms, again?

Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
Puleeze not Hop again, for fecks sake first time round was one of the worst ever seen, why would round 2 be any better?
And he'll see Dawson as hardly worth getting out of bed for - if he beats him, so what? A minor footnote on his record, and if he loses to the young upstart, which he might...well it's hardly worth the risk this late on is it.
There's just not that much out here for him right now, with Pavlik's team having made one of the worst management decisions of the decade.
Maybe Taylor, if he wallops Lacy in spectacular fashion. Because Joe, and more so Enzo, seem to want to do it one more time.

In defence of Calzaghe...
Jones is obviously not what he was BUT we're talking a 36 year old fighting a 39 year old. This was hardly Holmes-Ali; Marciano-Louis; Jones-McCallum...
If Jones is shot then Calzaghe deserves some credit for not being shot at 36...

Good idea on Taylor. However, he has hinted that he might into hiding down at middleweight if he can get down there again. Weird, I know, after forcing Pavlik into a catchweight rematch. But that's what he said.MightyWarrior wrote:Puleeze not Hop again, for fecks sake first time round was one of the worst ever seen, why would round 2 be any better?

Jones has had more fights, a longer amateur career, and fought at the highest level from earlier in his career and a style which relied on ridiculous speed and movement, losing just a little bit of that has rendered Jones ineffective.
Nobody said it was Holmes Ali, but Jones had lost three of his last attempts at a light heavyweight title, and was knocked out in two of them in pretty spectacular fashion.
By way of Comparison while we play this game, how many times had Ali been stopped in title fights prior to challenging Holmes?
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
My point is simply that this was not like some of the public executions that have been put on in the past. Jones could be considered top 10 contender material. Ali was nowhere near it. And, I actually said that it was not the same. I am not making a comparison.jamesmcdonnell wrote:The two are not related.Ezzard wrote:In defence of Calzaghe...

If we are talking about a man who has been rendered ineffective by losing a little bit of speed and movement then isn't the game up? If 'little bit' means the same to you as it does to me, that is...

JC-RJJ was entertaining enough, but it certainly wouldn't have been the fight most fans would have put JC in.
JC seems to still have plenty in the tank, in that his skills and speed doesn't seem to have diminished, so I'm hoping he takes on Froch then if by some miracle of god he flukes a win over Froch
he follows it up with Dawson

calzaghe has dismissed dawson as unproven and has also said he wouldn't fight a racist again.
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
It's a massive All-British fight if Froch hammers Pascal on December 6th in front of millions on ITV. The fight would capture British fans and presses imaginations alot better than JC Vs RJJ/B-Hop/Dawson would IMO. The fight would go out on terrestrial ITV and in front of a jam packed Millenium stadium and JC would reportedly pickup £5m in the process.sg1985 wrote:why would he ever fight froch? froch hasnt even won anything yet (altho he will in dec) and why would he go back to 168 after he looked like he'd grown into 175 well, that'd be daft. and froch doesnt deserve the fight even if he wins the wbc, maybe after he fought kessler.Chambers2 wrote:JC-RJJ was entertaining enough, but it certainly wouldn't have been the fight most fans would have put JC in.

I'm struggling to see any better alternatives than the Froch fight for JC, I'd rather catch a dose than watch JC Vs B-Hop II, the RJJ fight was conclusive enough not to need a rematch, Dawson's a respectable fight, but being a Brit and a Froch fan I'd much rather than see an All-British Superfight that could possibly be a 'Changing of the Guard' fight.
Calzaghe's said he could still make 168 and he'll go where the money is, so I don't think it'll be a problem for him to go back down in weight
JC's been getting abit of flak for fighting Old men, so hopefully he goes back to fighting prime fighters, such as Carl Froch or Chad Dawson
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
I'd be very surprised if JC retires now, he still looks to have plenty left going by Saturdays showing and there was no retirement talk after the fight. Plus Froch has been screaming for the fight for years and has been a thorn in JC's side, JC might just want to shut Carl the fcuk up.sg1985 wrote:also with sobot he fought him shortly after eubank, tune up? i would like to see a froch calzaghe fight from a british perspective but like i said calzaghe wouldnt move back down, and froch hasnt really proven anything yet, if he dismisses dawson as unproven he must feel the same about froch.frankwarrenfan wrote:calzaghe has dismissed dawson as unproven and has also said he wouldn't fight a racist again.
to be honest i think he'll retire
I'm feeling quite positive about JC-Froch happening for some reason (obviously dependent on the Pascal fight) and I haven't said or felt that in years maybe ever

is the money there? he struggled making 168 quite a few times ive heard reports he struggled making 175 this time, he will not move back down. i would prefer to see froch kessler anyway.
80'000 tickets at the Millenium stadium, plus US TV and ITV money, I reckon the money could be generated for a fight of this size. Calzaghe said he only moved up to 175 as there were no other options at 168, he said he could still make the weight.
This article also came out last week
http://forum.boxrec.com/viewtopic.php?f ... h#p1464378
“If Froch wins then who knows? I don’t think he is in my league as a fighter but he would have the WBC title and that is an honour. He’s decent but he has a very stand-up style and he’s easy to hit. He would be beaten, just like every fighter I’ve ever faced.”
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
Froch has been calling out JC for years and he's been 'moaning' about being ducked, Froch was also in the mandatory spot for the WBC title spot when JC was Champion, before he vacated and moved up for the Nard clash.sg1985 wrote:

Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
That article doesn't confirm anything, I think if the money is there he'll return, but time will tell
Calzaghe's father Enzo warned that anyone wanting to fight his son needed to make a big offer quickly.
"I hope the offers come now, then he doesn't have to retire. Once he's retired and they come with the offers it's no good," said Enzo
Re: Calzaghe / Jones - was good fight
I wouldn't have thought Froch would be forced straight into a mandatory, especially if the Calzaghe fight was on offer as the WBC would probably prefer the fightsg1985 wrote:would froch have to drop the belt to fight joe seen as the winner of lacy taylor would be mandatory?
