Well done Luke Campbell

Post by scrap iron »

Looks like Luke Campell may become our first ever European champion, he's made it into tomorrow's bantamweight final and at 21 it will be a great acheivement if he can strike gold. Maybe this is the real reason why fellow bantamweight Michael Maguire didn't want to stay amateur!

Nice achievement, and I like tough little bantamweights, but we've had European senior amateur champs before, such as Frankie Taylor and Tommy Nicholls.

i was at the fight and he deserved the countback.

however, the tournie was weak with many/most countries - including england - not fielding their full team

Yeah terrific achievement for Campbell. Terry Edwards needs to be congratulated as well. He has got gold medal winning performances from 3 different boxers in the 3 main amateur competitions - Worlds, Olympics and now the Europeans. Fantastic work.

Great win. Dear old Frankie Taylor got a mention by the know-nothing BBC anchor man, who said Frankie boxed for "Belgrade" or something - honestly, he said Belgrade.
Frankie boxed for Lancaster Lads.

Oh, in Belgrade! I needed it on paper to work it out. Frankie Taylor deserved a whole lot better.

Amateur boxing nowadays has its own format. I hate it in all honesty. The computerised scoring system has ruined the game and separated the two codes.

Whilst I appreciate the technical qualities it takes to win these type of modern age comps, I am left cold by the lack quick frantic to-and-fro quick action that was always a feature of amateur boxing especially at its highest level.
