The Last Stand of Ricky Hatton (Merged)

Post by WildWaylon »

The mail on Sunday has a supplement called LIVE and the front page today carries the headline "The last stand of Ricky Hatton". A very good article, well written and worth reading. Ricky talks very honestly about what he calls his redemption fight with Paulie Malignaggi. He says after his loss to Mayweather Jnr he never wanted to see Vegas ever again, but he is back to see if he can win there this time. He says he hasnt got the confidence he once had which is not good and admits his fight with Lascano was poor. Mayweather Snr is working on Rickys defence, trying to get him to move his head more and not just rush in as he has in the past. Ricky says he doesnt want to walk onto punches to get in close anymore, another change in his attitude. A while back I wouldnt have given Malignaggi any chance of beating Hatton but now I am not so sure. Graham and Kayes gone and trying to change his style so late in his career plus a loss and a poor performance last time out are all factors to be considered. Hatton knows he must win and win well or its time to quit. I think Hatton will win but I dont see him winning easily, what do you guys think?

I agree with what you are saying but The Yank is not a great fighter, Hatton may not have been at his best last time but Paulie was far worse

According to you Hatton should never have been trained at all.

Why so much disdain for him DG?

Actually dont answer that - this thread will be a saga only yourself will not precisely articulate. :TU:

Disdain? Moi? Hatton?

Just stating facts, I do not know the guy and have no hate towards him, He is just overhyped and overrated!

Billy Graham did a great job with him, but he is overrated.

I doubt it.

Not because Hatton is too good for him. More really Malignaggi being just another form of a Mandatory.

I do think that the Hatton pure pursuit of the dollar might work against them with the otherwise odd choice of Vegas.

PM is a New Yorker, and RH would not doubt rise to the relative challenge MSG would have brought him. It would have been slightly easier to believe all the rhetoric if they'd taken NY over LV.

Also of course, despite laughably saying they are going to LV was because it was cheaper for fans, he would have many more fans going to NY, deffo.

I think Ricky will stop Maglianaggi in 6 rounds.

I think Paulie is taking this fight with a bad hand, and with a contentious victory or two in his recent past because he knows he can cash in his chips here.

He'll be awkward and slippery but he cant deter Ricky and if Ricky shows 20% more restraint (not improvement) just restraint, he'll not struggle to hit Paulie.

Its really something when people here have no interest in Calzaghe - Jones and Hatton - Maglianaggi

Anyway

I see Hatton stopping Maglianaggi in about the 10th after winning all the rounds, bar maybe 1 or 2.

I think this is a really interesting fight, its a good mix of styles anyway

I hope it will be a good mix of styles but I can see this being quite messy with them tying each other up on the inside quite a bit. A lot depends on how much Malignaggi can up his game and whether Hatton has really slipped as much as a lot of people on here seem to believe.

Hatton UD is my prediction though I did have a small bet on a Malignaggi stoppage just in case. I've been thinking Hatton never looks good against slick fighters and has once or twice avoided them but then I don't think Paulie is all that slick.

hatton will win again.

malignaggi isn't elusive enuff to keep hatton off.

too open to the head.

he blocks off the body well and is a good spoiler.

he'll fiddle ricky around a bit.

but he hasn't got enuff to win.

hatton on pts then.

yeah, just imagine, not being really interested in a fight so one-sided that one 'combatant' clearly forfeits any chance of winning after the 2nd round, as many people predicted would be the case. imagine not being interested in a one-sided parade less competitive than sparring sessions many of us will have seen.

god KG what a strange lot we are, perversely wishing to see competitive fights, we make a mockery of boxing fans eh?

still at least we are lucky enough to have you around to remind us of the the error of our ways. are you looking forward to a Hopkins- Jones rematch then?

I think this fight is more about Hattons damaged mind rather than his worn body. Can he get back the belief that he can go out and beat anybody, that he had before? Somehow I dont think Mallignaggi is just there for the payday. He has the confidence and believes he can do the job, or so we are told. Heart and self belief will I think play a big part in this fight. Hatton admits in the interview he isnt fighting for the money, its all about returning from the loss and trying to put it behind him. He says had he retired after Mayweather it wouldnt have been good for his legacy. I think Hatton will win but if it is close, I dont think that will help him much in restoring his confidence. He needs a stoppage by midway to reassure himself that he is still good enough to carry on. In a split decision scenario I could see Hatton calling it a day.

Hatton will pulverise him and I very much think Hatton has declined.

But Maglianaggi is a dilute version of what he needs to be to win.

A slippery fighter doesn't get tagged as much as he does.

Just because he uses tweezers on his eyebrows doesn't mean he's hard to hit.

I think Hatton will look better against Mag.

But he still only 70% of his best, at best.

More than enough for Paulie.

David,

Lets hope you are right - British Boxing in my view needs the likes of Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye and Froch too keep on winning - if they do not the transition to those coming through the ranks to hopefully hit the world ranks is going to be vast - seriously if the above mentioned fall away who else do we have ready to step into their shoes now??

But back to Hatton - you have forgotten a couple of factors in your summing up of Hatton - firstly and I believe it is the most important one - the "Kerry Kayes" factor - without him doing all but wipe Hatton's arse for him I honestly believe Hatton will not be the same fighter.

Couple that with Hatton clearly not liking "fancy dan" fighters who box and run and who also have the necessary footwork to steal the fight with a few pitter patter jabs here and there - I honestly think Hatton has a whole lot of problems coming his way!!!

Then I suppose you could add in another factor - what is Hattons punch resistance like? - Collazo fight was alarming, Mayweather fight speaks for itself and then you have the Lazcano fight where Hatton was clearly buzzed in something like the 8th round by a fighter who was a Golden Boy fighter and was there for the pay day. Okay Malanaggi cannot punch but I dont think he will need to, to have Hatton in trouble.

You then have how harder a punch does Hatton have - he has bullied the majority of his fighters by the volume of punches - not by single concusive punchers.

The final point - is the change of trainer so late in the day of Hattons career - okay a fresh face in a lot of ways may do him some good - but to tell anyone who will listen to him that there has been quite a few changes for me is not the right thing for a fighter who reached world level by using tried and tested methods - iHatton should have changed one thing many years ago and now I feel it is too late and that is his lifestyle outside of the ring!!!!!

The final big factor and it is perhaps the biggest in my thoughts that Malalanaggi could possibly steal and I mean steal this fight by his hit and run tactics is how much did Cotto take out of Malanaggi?? was his last fight against Ndou mearly a blip because he knew the Hatton fight was already made so he took the foot off the gas and thought of the healthy pay day against Hatton rather than think of the fight at the time with Ndou.

Overall - I think Hatton's lifestyle has finally caught up with him - I think Malanaggi still has a big fight left in him and I honestly think Malanaggi will furstrate the life out of Hatton by running all night - Hatton I believe does not have the stamina to run after a man who will not stand in front of him and fight - the more the rounds go on the more frustrated he will become and that will lead to mistakes and enable Malanaggi to stand and trade by then Hatton will be knackered and this could heavily influence the judges to give the fight to Malanaggi.

Bloody hell I am exhausted after writing all that.

Hatton has looked increasingly vulnerable later in fights. Paulie is nothing if not tough. He took one hell of a beating from Cotto. Cotto probably wasn't quite as powerful as Hatton is at 140, but he put a real beatdown on Paulie.

Paulie has an outside chance if it goes beyond 8.

Malignaggi is a good boxer... No doubt about that...

But he's not the GREAT boxer that people are making him out to be... :shame:

I think Hatton will stop him... :box:

I feel a little sorry for Hatton... He's had some excellent wins in his career, and each time Hatton beats someone now, his opponenents credentials are doubted...

For example, when he beat Urango... People said that Urango was merely a "paper champagne" because he never beat Hatton for the IBF title...

Malignaggi is good but he's not as good as some people (Americans) proclaim him to be. I have him losing his last two (with the Ngoudjo fight being a robbery) and I see him losing this one, most likely on points.
