New Boxing Magazine launched -Uppercut

I feel it's close enough to the launch date to inform all of you hear that there is a new magazine coming out soon called UPPERCUT, which we hope will bring a bit of star quality to boxing and boxing coverage.

I am merely a contributor, but I am working with the owner to try and bring a bit of glamour and pizzazz to boxing coverage. That's not to knock the fine work done by the stalwart of boxing coverage in the UK, Boxing News, of course contributed to by one of our own here, but sadly boxing seems to be becoming increasingly minority, and we hope that our efforts can go some small way to reversing that trend and turning boxers into stars.

The magazine will be launched at the Calzaghe v Johnson fight, on the 12th where I will be helping to sell the launch issue along with the owner. I'm not sure what the cover price is, but I hope that some of you will be attending and will support our efforts.

Look out for a lanky skinhead in a suit selling copies of a magazine.

Oh there's plenty of those mate, I think there's 6 on hand in slinky outfits, I'm just helping out, look apparently they are well tasty, haven't seen them as yet.

Monthly or weekly publication?
Also what will it offer that the others do not at the moment?
I am sure your experience on these forums will give you an insight on what is wanted by the real boxing enthusiasts, and what is lacking in the others.

Monthly.

It's not so much competing with the current magazines as being an addition to them, not so much concentrating on fight reports and the likes, as that is covered very well elsewhere.

Wait and see, and you can tell me if you think it offers anything the other do not, I think it's got a pretty fresh approach, a lot more irreverent and lighthearted, much like this forum in fact.

Would I be right in presuing its all from a British viewpoint and not stacked full of too much America/Overseas stuff??

Incidently whats the distribution coverage likely to be shall we get it up here in the fine city of Edinburgh or shall it be another London dominated distributed affair?

I'm not entirely sure, being from London, the rest of the Island scarcely exists in my eyes.

Seriously though, I don't know, I can find out from my editor, I believe we will be distributing it via the web too via subscriptions.

There will be some international coverage, and there will be regular US stuff, but the focus is on British boxing and boxers, and our scene generally.

Actually, I was thinking of suggesting Jason Booth. That would go down a treat, wouldn't it?

Which boxers would you suggest to have on the front cover that might attract a wider audience than your hardcore fan?

Because I will tell you something...the mag will have no chance if it relies on simply a very small hardcore, several of whom have admitted on here that they don't even bother buying mags these days.

Ring seems to have survived quite a while by putting superstars on the front.

I wonder how the next issue's (probably dated December 2005) sales would get on if the front was a smiling Noel Arambulet and the headline "Venezuela's 105lb king tells all about his weight making regime".

That's true, Ian. When Boxing Monthly came out in March 1989, we had a thorough British section but also a huge American section covering all the big fights with glossy colour photos from American fight photographers Tom Casino and Chris Farina.
And on the front cover was a fantastic shot of Mike Tyson.
The magazine went down a storm. By the second issue (which had a great shot of Tommy Hearns on the cover), we were selling as many issues as BN. Harry Mullan was inundated with calls from people asking for Boxing Monthly.
British fans like the American fights covered in detail.

I have told a couple of newsagents here in Llanelli about Uppercut, and so far one has asked to distribute the mag.

I must admit, I think BM is a bit boring nowadays. It should be retitled Graham Houston Monthly for all the work done by Glyn Leach. There's definite room for another British monthly.

Pretty much agree Bennie. I bought the very first issue of Boxing Monthly and had a nice pile of them for quite a while. However, it then tended to get more 'Americanised' and veered away slightly from the British scene. I think a good magazine concentrating on the British boxing scene would complement Boxing News very nicely.

It was a great cover shot of Tyson on issue # 1.

Great idea - Jason "One Tooth" Booth on the cover. Of course you should do well with an Oscar DH cover, maybe Hopkins too
