The only way to prove you're not a 68-year old twisted boxing fan, and really Bernardo Mercado's daughter is posting naked pictures of yourself.

I have not seen the belt, but I will certainly look out for it. Rotterdam, city of lost boxing belts.

Heavyweight championship belt

I believe the belt that she is referring to is the
WBC Continental Heavyweight title belt,
that Bernardo Mercado won by knocking out Trevor Berbick in the first round(of scheduled 12)in Halifax Nova Scotia, April 3.1979.

That's awful that his belt was taken away from him. There are so many tragic boxing legends who have done so well in the sport, only to have nothing but their memories and a few articles and a belt or pictures of their glory days...

I remember Sam Langford at the end of his career was blind and living in someone's basement, after such a marvelous career, and he was asked if he missed boxing, and he said "I'll always have my memories."

I hope your dad finds his belt :D

I was watching a DVD the other day entitled,
DEATH DIMENSION(1976)
directed by legendery director Al Adamson.
It stars Jim Kelly(Enter the Dragon,Black Belt Jones)
Anyway Bernardo Mercado is in it for about 30 seconds.
"Hey,Your not suppose to be here".
"Ill show you out".
He plays(?) a watchman.
Anyway he doesnt fight Jim Kelly,
he just offers him to show him the way out of the brothel.
But he looks huge walking down the dark hallway.

Who on earth would be crazy enough to try steal a belt from a beast like Bernardo Mercado???

Karla, you should get your old man on this forum, get him to answer some questions, would be a most welcome guest.

He's also be very welcome on the message board of the Cyber Bozing Zone, a lot of old timers round there who'd be happy to hear from him.

Karla,
Have you or your father considered contacting Jose Sulaiman or his representatives about the possibility of obtaining a replica WBC Continental Americas Championship belt? It wouldn't the exact belt that your Dad won that night against Trevor Berbick ( I'm afraid that one's likely long gone & will never resurface ), but it would still be something to be proud of. And Sulaiman always seemed to have a bit of a soft spot for your Dad during his era because he kept him high in the rankings & always seemed to be one fight away from fighting Larry Holmes for the World Title, but timing & circumstances never quite allowed properly for it to occur.

Anyone know how many of Bernardo Mercado's professional bouts were televised or filmed?
I rememember watching with my Dad,the Mercado vrs Earnie Shavers fight live back when the networks use to show fights.
That was a good one,Shavers knocked Mercado down, and whenever that usually happens the opponent is soon out of there,But Mercado got up,Shavers ripped his glove on Mercado's teeth,Mercado weathered the storm then TKO's Shavers.

Here is a link to a newpaper article(with an action photo)of Leon Spinks vs Bernardo Mercado,Oct 1980.
It was the top preliminary fight on the closed circuit Larry Holmes vs Muhammad Ali title fight.
Mercado was the number 1 WBC contender gong into this fight and would have fought the winner of
the Holmes-Ali fight if he got past Leon Spinks.

Yes,Seems like Hard luck Mercado.
He was supposed to have gotten a title shot a couple years earlier,
against the winner of the Norton-Holmes fight.
Holmes even had him penciled in as his first title defense, but for whatever reason in the meantime,Mercado fought Big John Tate
and lost that bout too of course.

Bernardo Mercado along with Howard Smith and Stan Ward were the principle sparring partners of Ken Norton, when

What happened to Bernardo Mercado vs. Ali?

Post by osc1360 »

June 6, 1980, The Daily Intelligencer, page 18: Ali comeback slated for Aug. 11 this time

Retired heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali will launch his comeback compaign for a forth title with an Aug. 11 bout against Bernardo Mercado, according to Mercado's manager.

"It could happen, but it's still very tentative," says boxing promoter Don King.

"I just got here first. I sold my man," said manager Joe Conforte.

Conforte said he has signed a $1 million contract for the bout and King, while confirming the signing, said Conforte had jumped the gun in making the announcement.
