Womens World
The Womens World Championships started, they got the live scoring up. Also, the entries from around the world and the draws. Anybody know what happened to our pinweight? It shows her as entered, then she's not in the draw. USA Boxing website initially said we had Sylvia Villapando going at 101, but their latest post/update doesnt list her anymore. Same thing happened for the women's pan-ams back in October. Note to USA Boxing, there are other 101pounders available!
Best wishes to all the girls from all over the globe, but GO USA!
Re: Womens World
the usa pinweight sylvia villapondo was over weight for the pan ams in october and showed up over weight again in china so she had to be scratched out the tournament.
Re: Womens World
I believe that, in order to participate in the Worlds, the qualification was done at the Pan Ams. Once Sylvia had qualified, she couldn't be replaced by another USA boxer.I'm sure that's frustrating for the other 101's, especially considering that she didn't make weight for PanAms, there was plenty of time for her to get down or for USA Boxing to find a replacement. That's unfortunate for all involved.
Re: Womens World
No. Just like with the men's Worlds, and Olympics, the Pan Ams is a qualifying process for the US Championship winners.I thought the team for World's was determined at Nationals and the PanAm team was determined at Women's Golden Gloves. No?

Re: Womens World
OK...im confused. If Sylvia didn't go to the GG, how did she qualify for the Pan Ams? If she didn't make weight for the Pan Ams, how did that ualify her for the Worlds? The AIBA site list her on the USA roster, but not in the draw. USA's website initiaally listed her as being on the team. Not to talk bad about her, I'm sure she's a great kid and I've seen her box, she's a good little boxer. But if she can't make the weight (and I don't know that) then USA needs to go to the #2, #3 etc. I don't believe the quals are the same as the men for AIBA, otherwise, how did Frenchon get replaced? Look at the team roster on the AIBA site, we initially entered a full team. And yes, I'm biased....i train a 101pounder!
Re: Womens World
Amy, someone told you wrong. Villapando won the U.S. Championships and did not participate in the GG; Esparza won the Championships at 106 and won the Golden Gloves at 110; Houlihan won the Championships and Esparza won the Golden Gloves at 110; 114 - Downing won both; 119 - Moreno won the Championships and Christina Cruz won the GG; 125 - Jody Weller was the silver medalist at the Championships and did not participate in the GG; 132 - Barry won the Championships and Patricia and Patricia Manuel won the GG; 138 - Queen Underwood won the Championships and Althea Martin won the GG; 145 - Vaness Jackson won the Championships and Lisa Kuronya won the GG; 154 - Crews won the Championships and the GG and Grace Parks was the silver medalist at the Championships. Sounds to me like Crews couldn't go to Worlds and they were able to replace her with the Championships runner up; 165 - Meredith Giustina won the Championships and Tia Daniels won the GG; 176 - Mioshia Wagoner won the Championships and no one at that weight class competed in the GG; 189 - Tiffani Hearn won the Championships and the GG. It is very obvious that the Pan Am and World team was picked from the U.S. Championships.
I don't think any one said Villaponda didn't make weight at Pan Ams - just that she was having problems making weight - and I may be wrong. And, yes, the qualifying process is the same for the women as it is for the men.

Yeah, it's called the "home nation syndrome". That's why they got 2 golds in Beijing when they only deserved 1. That's why any host country gets more of what they deserve including the US when they host a tournament., ie. Olympics, worlds, etc.amy wrote:Anyone find it odd that China won 11 medals while the erst of the countries competing won 3 or 4?
Re: Womens World
Azerbaijan just won 6 gold medals at the world military championships (CISM) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
I rest my case.
