100 years of fight records for you

Post by lklawson »

I have 100 years of fight records, meticulously transcribed, for you, from 1740 to November 1840.

These fights were recorded by pugilist Owen Swift in the last 30 pages of his book "The Hand-book to Boxing."

My hobbies, among other things, include republishing old WMA (Western Martial Arts) manuals. These obviously include Boxing (and Wrestling, etc.).

Anyway, like I said, I have a century of fight records for you. There are some real gems in it too, the first sanctioned gloved match (well before the Marquis), a record of an (apparently) sanctioned FEMALE match, numerous fatalities, several deaf fighters (including the famous "Deaf Burke" having to run for his life from a mob), and some really, REALLY unique stage names ("Ding Dong" stands out in my memory).

I can provide the records as a plain .txt file, .doc/.odf, or you can download the entire text for free from my lulu page (http://www.lulu.com/content/5015084). You might want to check out some of the others repubs too. Edwards, for instance, has a history for both him and Chambers which includes some details of their fight records.

BTW, a friend of mine, Peter Dellys (Green Distant Star), sends a shout out to you.

Please let me know what format will be best for you and how to get it to the right place.

Peace favor your sword,
Kirk Lawson

Boxrec only includes Marquis of Queensberry fights. Although there are some old fights still left in the database that don't belong, but they'll be removed some time too. As a general rule those old record compilations contain a lot of errors (such as Sporting Magazine with a series of articles "Chronology of the ring" in 1797-1798; Jon B's Chronology; multiple editions of Fistiana; Famous Fights Past & Present with "Pugilistic chronology" in No. 54-76).

OK.

Well, guess it's a bust then.

Sorry.

To say the truth, I was going to have a go at creating an electronic version of bareknuckle records, but it's a project I didn't have plans to get to any time soon. Would have to figure out how to deal with multiple uncertainties that were common for fight accounts of those times, such as different durations of the fights (sometimes one fight had 3-4 different versions of duration, each newspaper/wire having its own estimation). Then there's name issue, where the reporter didn't know exact names of the participants, and only heard their profession or place of living/birth and used that instead of name. And multiple other problems.

Well, I'm sure there are at least two or three ways you could choose to address these issues.

Still, if you wish to use these, please let me know what format you'd like them in. PDF, .doc, .odf, etc.
